I'm a little more relaxed now, thanks for the update.
SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Still Awaiting Approval, Despite Rumors
Categories: News, Rumors and Gossip iPhone / iPod Touch
Ah, the Internet... where the lines between actual news and unsubstantiated wild rumors get blurred. Like yesterday, when BoyGenius reported (based off a tip from an "anonymous tipster") that AT&T pushed Apple into rejecting Sling's iPhone SlingPlayer from the App Store, spelling doom for any iPhoner's desire to Sling TV to their iPhone.
We had an opportunity to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation. It turns out anyone stating that SlingPlayer has been denied, or confirmed for that matter, is only spreading rumors.
"Here are the facts," he says. "We submitted the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple a few weeks ago, and we're in contact with them (Apple). There's nothing to report yet. It's a great app, and there's nothing more we would like to do than have it be available in the App Store."
Part of the problem is Apple's approval process, which does seem to take an eternity when there’s so much pent-up anticipation.
"A two to three week wait is common," says Jay. "Some apps may take less time, but it's important to remember that SlingPlayer is far more complex than your typical iPhone app. It makes sense it would take a little extra time to go through this process."
All said, the constant rumors really highlight the anticipation and excitement for the iPhone SlingPlayer. One thing's for sure, with the approval process now nearing the three week mark, it shouldn't be long until something definitive is announced.

I stopped anticipating the release when I found out it won't work with my SB Classics. Now I hope that Apple rejects it.

Thanks for thinking about the rest of us not in your situation.
I hope they allow it to work with all classics except yours.

That's a real mature attitude. Let's make mature adult like comments here folks.

Additionally, TUAW is reporting on their Twitter page that they received the same tip that the Boy Genius blog received but they opted not to run with it. Why? Well, they did some research and determined that the IP that sent the "tip" was an IP that belongs to the Bureau of Prisons and was allocated to a prison or other correctional facility in West Virginia. Given that information they felt it was bogus. Boy Genius was not so smart....

LOL, i never knew slingmedia and apple were run from a correctional facility. Instead of making license plates, they make cutting edge electronics.

Yeah, well you probably don't come from a state where two former governors are soon to be cell mates!

new service. One time $200 dollars (estimate) for streaming tv to your iphone. you can also watch the streaming tv on your computer. The quality is high. Sounds like a good deal.

so Boy Genius Report was lying?
The BGR quoted an "anonymous" source w/o looking to see if it was from a reliable address. The IP that submitted the tip was from a prison in West Virginia.
So no he wasn't lying, but spreading a false rumor (it isn't lying if you don't know it's false). He was just an ignoramous and wanted to generate some headlines and hits to his website.

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum, you do still work there! ;)
How many emails and voicemails did you get my man?
Glad they finally said something, even if it was very little.

Well, it may be a little gruff, but I share his sentiment. If sling is going to artificially insert incompatibility with certain sling boxes, then I hope Apple arbitrarily rejects their app. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
The good news from this false rumor is because apple had been approved others application that streams video, will be hard to reject the slingplayer. Also the reaction from the false rumor will be difficult to ATT trying to push apple to reject the application. ATT is a big company, and if there are afraid of the bandwidth, they should upgrade the system. They have tons of advertising of the iPhone applications in the TV. I can bet that if the slingplayer is approved, you will see an advertising of an application that allows you to watch TV from the iPhone.
I think that the problem of the old equipment is something about the encoding of the stream video (CODEC) that apple allow. Probably this old boxes doesn't have the requirement to install new firmware of the new codec.
I alway say there should start like ORB did, with jailbrake iPhones! Then go with the App Store..!!!!!!!

Well, Sling Media is not adding code to avoid Slingbox Classic. They have chosen only to support the new and better format in the new Slingboxes.
The old Slingboxes where based on WMV from Microsoft. The new Slingboxes are based on MPEG-4.
It's not like Sling Media have removed anything. When they sold Slingbox Classic, nobody talked about Slingplayer for iPhone.

Well it worked with classic in beta, there's video of it... so you're wrong.... not to mention i purchased my slingbox classic less than a year ago... and there was most certainly talk about the iphone app at that time... that's why i bought the thing.

How do you know that the beta version supported it? What was shown in video was likely an Alpha version that was demoed. If you have used the beta version and are leaking this information then you are violating your NDA with Sling. If you are just basing your comments on what you read then you are basing it on rumors.
The thing that must be noted is that only the ProHD supports a codec other than WMV. The Pro and Solo models only work in WMV. So the decision was not based on codec support. The decision must have been based solely on economics and if it made sense to support hardware that is 4 years old.
Sling's not the only company that has done this. I bought a fifth generation iPod back in July 2007. A few months later, Apple announced movie rentals from iTunes. But only new iPods could be used to view rented movies. So my brand new player was already not supported. This is the high tech world. If you don't like the fact your old hardware isn't supported that's fine. But don't go around wishing ill-will for the rest of us who have bought newer boxes. That's just wrong.

Um yeah it is like that. Slingplayer for iPhone talk started the moment the iPhone came out. Slingbox Classic was still being sold (and supported) and I bought one in the hopes I would be able to watch it on my new iPhone. And like the previous poster said, the betas of SlingPlayer worked on the Classic - so the 'hard part' of the programming has already been done. I'm extremely disappointed and possibly extremely immature because I wouldn't be the least bit upset if apple rejects the app.
