SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Still Awaiting Approval, Despite Rumors

Ah, the Internet... where the lines between actual news and unsubstantiated wild rumors get blurred. Like yesterday, when BoyGenius reported (based off a tip from an "anonymous tipster") that AT&T pushed Apple into rejecting Sling's iPhone SlingPlayer from the App Store, spelling doom for any iPhoner's desire to Sling TV to their iPhone.

We had an opportunity to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation. It turns out anyone stating that SlingPlayer has been denied, or confirmed for that matter, is only spreading rumors.

"Here are the facts," he says. "We submitted the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple a few weeks ago, and we're in contact with them (Apple). There's nothing to report yet. It's a great app, and there's nothing more we would like to do than have it be available in the App Store."

Part of the problem is Apple's approval process, which does seem to take an eternity when there’s so much pent-up anticipation.

"A two to three week wait is common," says Jay. "Some apps may take less time, but it's important to remember that SlingPlayer is far more complex than your typical iPhone app.  It makes sense it would take a little extra time to go through this process."

All said, the constant rumors really highlight the anticipation and excitement for the iPhone SlingPlayer. One thing's for sure, with the approval process now nearing the three week mark, it shouldn't be long until something definitive is announced.

We have a community here of 35,732 members. 1450 people or about 4% of the community have responded to that poll. On top of that, forum population is probably roughly 10% of the established user base.

Yes, 4% -- that's a sample size. Again, I don't know if it's a reliable sample...but it is just a sample of the population here. And it's the only FACTUAL estimate we have as opposed to...ya know, feelings. :P

Touche! I knew you'd get me with that! :)

I'm still betting that the customer adoption rate has picked up and that they have sold more boxes in the last 2 years than the previous 2 years. And i'm guessing that most of those boxes have been Pros and Solos.

But yeah, it's a guess....

This kind of news, other than setting up my DVR, which I can still do via my Mogul and Slingbox, my iTouch might just become my mobile Hulu TV. (BTW, Walkinghotspot works awesome, its like having a a iPhone, but faster)

This is the type of stuff the iphone was made for.
Screw fart apps we want a mobile entertainment machine.

Since NDA's are being broken. Does anybody know if the slingplayer iphone beta version was able to output video to a tv?

I know he got at least one email.  And, I know he did not respond to that email; not even a canned 'thank you for your concern' type form letter.

ROFL.  No NDAs were broken.  Wasn't in the beta for iPhone.  If you patrol Howard Forums you'd have seen the screenshots just like I did.  Didn't even know there was a beta for iPhone until I saw the screenshot on their site. HF did eventually delete the post though.  I was too late though and I guess the screenshot on HF was  the last of that good thing.

So, to answer your question in detail, don't know.

Secondly why would it be able to output video to TV? None of the other SPM apps can do it.

Video from the ipod is able to be played on a tv. There is actually a tv out feature in the sdk.

So, the question is, will AT&T be the only carrier with the iPhone and the only one who won't allow their people to Hulu! That is what the iPhone was born to do.

I'm so happy all this is happening right when AT&T is trying to Woo Apple with an extension on the exclusive rights.

Who want's to take odds that it doesn't get extended.

Yeah but I was just thinking of what Sling does, I didn't think that video out from the mobile side would be their thing.  Especially on their first time out with the iPhone app and none of their other mobile apps do it.  But hey I don't know.  So, I should shut my cakehole.

You're right. I doubt it will have that feature. I was just hoping. :)
I have a vacation home in the mountains with no cable or internet, it would be a dream to use it this way.

You may be on to something...just thinking at the features they are hinting @ for down the road.  They coiud really revive their business with a feature like that. I'm thinking though that the iPhone needs more power and at least the processing umph to run 2 apps @ once for that to go down.

April 17, 2009 6:50 PM

A lot of people would happily upgrade their boxes if it had this feature. I'm sure there are a lot of people in my situation or close to it. They could market it as a mobile slingcatcher/slingplayer.

I sure hope it does not get extended...If Apple was smart, let all carriers have at it. WiMax and 4G it, they will bury Palm and the rest.

I hope it doesnt get extended we should be able to choose our cell provider.

It would be horrible if palm and the rest went down. Competition is good, it keeps Apple inventive.

Well, Sling Media is not adding code to avoid Slingbox Classic. They have chosen only to support the new and better format in the new Slingboxes. The old Slingboxes where based on WMV from Microsoft. The new Slingboxes are based on MPEG-4. It's not like Sling Media have removed anything. When they sold Slingbox Classic, nobody talked about Slingplayer for iPhone.
Well it worked with classic in beta, there's video of it... so you're wrong.... not to mention i purchased my slingbox classic less than a year ago... and there was most certainly talk about the iphone app at that time... that's why i bought the thing.

Wah wah wah.  big stupid babies.  Ok, it worked with a classic box in beta.  Did you also know that they used it on a jailbroken phone?  Maybe it won't "work" on a legit phone.  I'm sick of the whining.  Here it is.  Don't like the fact that you have to buy a new slingbox for the slingplayer?  Then buy a blackberry.  Want slingplayer for iphone?...then shut up and buy a new slingbox like everyone else.  All people do is complain.  just shut up.  jeez.

From his article...
"I have an original Slingbox Classic, but have moved onto a Hava player because of their FREE mobile clients for S60, Windows Mobile, and Nokia Internet Tablets. I have way too many mobile phones to buy several copies of the SlingPlayer Mobile client, even if the quality and functions may be better than my Hava. I understand that Hava is also working on Android and iPhone applications so I may never upgrade or go back to using my Slingbox."
