SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Still Awaiting Approval, Despite Rumors

Ah, the Internet... where the lines between actual news and unsubstantiated wild rumors get blurred. Like yesterday, when BoyGenius reported (based off a tip from an "anonymous tipster") that AT&T pushed Apple into rejecting Sling's iPhone SlingPlayer from the App Store, spelling doom for any iPhoner's desire to Sling TV to their iPhone.

We had an opportunity to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation. It turns out anyone stating that SlingPlayer has been denied, or confirmed for that matter, is only spreading rumors.

"Here are the facts," he says. "We submitted the iPhone SlingPlayer to Apple a few weeks ago, and we're in contact with them (Apple). There's nothing to report yet. It's a great app, and there's nothing more we would like to do than have it be available in the App Store."

Part of the problem is Apple's approval process, which does seem to take an eternity when there’s so much pent-up anticipation.

"A two to three week wait is common," says Jay. "Some apps may take less time, but it's important to remember that SlingPlayer is far more complex than your typical iPhone app.  It makes sense it would take a little extra time to go through this process."

All said, the constant rumors really highlight the anticipation and excitement for the iPhone SlingPlayer. One thing's for sure, with the approval process now nearing the three week mark, it shouldn't be long until something definitive is announced.

Okay, they either need to approve or deny this thing. This is getting really old.

I whole heartedly agree... How long has it been? It's like the series LOST, but it would be called "LOST in the Apple Approval Process".

For weeks I have appshopper.com reloading every minute to finally see sling appear. Have even restless nights because of waiting and checking. When will we get the app???

Maybe we should start a pool.

This is beginning to sound like the iCall Facebook page when it was waiting approval. Took 5 months. Hopefully SlingPlayer isn't THAT long in coming!

Anyhow, from what I have seen, NO ONE ever knows when Apple is going to approve it but Apple. Their process is somewhat variable and unknown...

This is killing me.... I'm hoping that it gets released soon. Can you imagine how cool this would be for a road trip? I have the cable to plug my phone into the DVD player in my car so the kids can watch when we're in 3G territory.

Then again, I don't want them to release something early that isn't quite ready for prime time. We've all had apps like that, haven't we? :-D

April 21, 2009 8:57 PM

So, let me get this straight: Slingcommunity, which claims not to be affiliated with Sling Media, manages "to speak with Jay Tannenbaum at Sling Media, who was able to shed some light on the current situation."

But they don't ask him about the controversy over the dropping of support for legacy Slingboxes. (Or, if they did and he gave a "no comment," they don't bother to report that.)

What good is being independent of the company if you're not going to ask the tough questions?

This is one feature that I can tell you won't be in the initial release of SlingPlayer for iPhone. Why? Well, Apple does not presently provide the API to developers wishing to output video through the dock. No third party program at present outputs video to the dock connector. SlingPlayer would be included. There is software for jailbroken phones that allows this but it doesn't work really well and I've gotten stuff like Joost videos to play though it but at only about 1 frame per second. Not worth the headache.

Now, when Apple releases the 3.0 OS, they are going to open up a lot more API interfaces for 3rd party developers. I believe video out on the dock may be one of those. Let's hope that Sling would take advantage of that for 3.0. That would be cool - a portable SlingCatcher!

Someone like Jay has a limited amount of time to speak. The whole "app status" issue has been WAY more important the the support for older boxes. It's been discussed and can be fairly easily concluded that the decision was a financial one and not technical. There's really nothing to be said. It was a bad decision, but nothing we can do about it at this point.

Hah! "Limited time to speak." Is that what he told you? That's rich!

Sounds like $ling Media is giving its customers the brush-off once again.

I'd be happy to field this one, particularly since I'm the one who spoke with Jay.

First, anyone can speak with Jay. He is the current PR contact there, afterall. I don't have any special privs, I simply sent him an e-mail asking if I could get a phone call with him to discuss the rumor, and he obliged.

So, the purpose of my call with him was to get a factual statement regarding the rumor, which I was obviously able to get. Now, if I crawled up his rear-end about the support issue the second I got him on the line, there's not a chance in hell I would have gotten any statement about the rumor, nor any chance to talk to him ever again.

I am trying to get an interview with someone there with the sole purpose of discussing the EOL fiasco with the iPhone, ask questions, and see if I can get the community answers. I've sent several e-mails to that effect, but have yet to actually get someone to talk to me on that particular topic. I'll continue to persist, and hopefully they'll talk when they're ready to. Me pushing them in an unprofessional manner isn't going to speed up that process.

That said, I did ask Jay if there had been any progress on getting the interview. Why didn't I mention that in the story above? Easy... it didn't have anything to do with it.

So, I appreciate you coming to my defense NA9D, but I don't fully agree with what you said. I do think there's more to look into here, and I do think Sling owes their customers an explanation. I don't think that the explanation or reasons for their actions matter, be it technical or financial, only that they're upfront and honest with their customers.

I like the idea of a pool. The over/under should be will the app be released before or after the billionth app download "contest". Which is my new thought. Maybe they will release it when it gets a little closer to a billion. If someone is going to win your contest, wouldn't you rather the person win it downloading something cool and substantial rather than a $0.99 joke app.

Okay, I'm just desperate. I'm looking for any sign or indicator that Apple may be waiting for anything other than actually doing rigorous testing on a complicated app. After all the waiting, it would be so anti-climactic to see it just show up. I have a feeling that I'm going to see it, download it immediately, and expect to do something far more special than simply placeshifting my television. Maybe it'll detect tumors and blood clots too.

I tested it with the YouTube app and it worked, I just assumed if YouTube worked, this would too.  Bummer, I sold the wife on this to get the cable in the first place.  If I can keep her from here, I'll be able to live to fight another day....

Yeah, the YouTube app is an Apple provided application though. I did the same exact thing you did - I went and got the cable in anticipation of this. I also had obtained a pair of MyVu Crystal viewing glasses (http://www.myvu.com ) with some Amex points that I was hoping to use too (but I didn't get those specifically for the iPhone app). I was bummed when I started playing with different video apps and discovered that they didn't output via the dock. I then started looking into this and found that it's an unsupported API right now...Hopefully with 3.0. It would be SO slick.

I was closely following the Orb message boards last fall when OrbLive was awaiting approval for the App Store. I'd think that the wait time would be similar as OrbLive and SlingPlayer are comparable applications -- both provide video streaming of live TV. It took about 3 months, as I recall, from the time that the app was submitted till it first appeared in the AppStore. Even then, the first version of OrbLive only supported WIFI. They wound up reducing bandwidth usage to get 3g approved in a later version.

So, we are now about a month since SlingPlayer was submitted. I'd guess that we are a few weeks away, at the least..

Well... so much for that.  One billion apps came a lot faster as it got closer.  My next best guess would be next Wednesday.  The one month point.  But I guess it's a lot more arbitrary than I thought. Maybe it will be @ 2:24pm GMT three Sundays from now.  If I'm right, someone owes me a coke.
