Confirmed: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone/iPod Touch Coming Tonight, Full Details

Earlier today, Mac Rumors got wind Sling Media's long-awaited SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone client would be heading to the App store sometime later tonight. According to their sources, SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone will be Wi-Fi only, and while the older Slingbox hardware (Classic, Tuner, and AV) will continue to be officially unsupported, they will supposedly work with the iPhone player. This is contrary to their previous announcment.

Heading straight to the source, we can confirm the reports; SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone is indeed coming to the App Store tonight. It will currently work with all Slingboxes over Wi-Fi only (no 3G), at a price of $29.95. No specific time has been given, only that it should be available for purchase sometime between 12:01 and 6:00 AM Eastern.

So to recap SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone / iPod Touch:

  • $29.95
  • Wi-Fi only
  • Supported for Slingbox PRO, SOLO, PRO-HD
  • Currently compatible with all Slingboxes, including Classic, AV, and Tuner
  • Coming tonight!

Get ready... get set....

GREAT !!!!!!!

So, Orb works in 3G, Sling not so much. That seems fair. $30, that seems fair for a crippled product. So exactly how will I license my old WM version to iPhone? So many questions so few desires.

AFAIK, you won't be able to license your old WM version. You'll have to buy again.

Not sure why they allow Orb over 3G but not SlingPlayer. Maybe b/c of the demand of SPM will be much higher than Orb? Who knows.

A jailbroken phone has no issue with this limitation tho...

I think that while the lack of 3G/Edge support sucks, it doesn't surprise me. Many people never expected the app to have it.

The important thing to notice is that the older boxes will now work with the software!

Though finally the app will come I was looking for ... I still don't get why AT&T can rule the world. I really have nothing to do with them and I also don't wanna have in future .... (I do lvie in Europe)

I'm not a developer, but could they not have programmed:

IF provider=AT&T, than disappoint customer
ELSE make customer happy with 3G support

Yeah, no sale Sling Media sorry, you totally wimped out for your loyal customers here. Not even a sham attempt to bust the door open in a legal arena.

I hope a class action suit starts since ATT is baring only iphone users while Blackberry and Smartphone users continue Slinging all they want.

Very disgusted with ATT.

Beyond that, I have a friend at ATT who is a 3rd level network admin and he says the Blackberry / Smartphone Slingbox usage is a complete non-issue since its quite rare that even three users are Slinging at the same time coming from the same originating node.

This is pure FUD. ATT used FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, and DOUBT to win this. There is no proof because they never tried.

Older boxes, phuleeeez, not a from the goodness of their hearts.

What, I can't seriously believe that they think we'd forget that they said it wouldn't work in the first place?

Purely a financial decision...just like them limiting it in the first place and requiring an upgrade.  They were saying it wouldn't work when they knew flat out that it would work.

They got the app back because of the data issue.  They know theyd loose customers because of the no wifi, so to make up for that customer loss they decided to open the app to all (which worked on all anyway) and say that well we won't support it and it won't work later on....just to get the sales.

Isn't that what we suggested in the first place.  They should be SUED up the ying/yang for that upgrade BS.

Everyone knew they were lying through their sneaky snakey teeth.

It's interesting that in the last few days we've seen articles in major mainstream press about the problem of iPhone users being primarily responsible for the lion's share of AT&T's 3G traffic. I'm not one for conspiracies theories, but I hate coincidences like this. Maybe the earlier news was to try to let us down easy. One thing for sure is that Apple has been mandating that AT&T do network upgrades pending new product announcements in June. Maybe once that's done, we might get 3G again. But I'd love to hear a formal explanation of why that iPhone users can't get a critical feature that every other Sling Mobile platform has gotten for years.

Would people still want 3G even if the video quality is really bad? I'm guessing the quality would be somewhat of youtube video with 3G.

May 12, 2009 3:20 PM

Time for all iphone customers to email and call AT&T on a daily basis until they allow this over 3G!!!!!!!

How do you know they won't?  Remember, Sling is now Echostar.  They have much deeper pockets than Sling as a standalone company ever did.

You got that right Sevenfeet.  It was not a coinky dinks for darn sure.  AT&T was flooding the media late last week and the beginning of this week because they knew the app was coming out this week.

This is bogus, there's nothing "mobile" about it. Why am I going to pay 30 dollars to have it on my phone when i can only use it where i might as well be using my computer?

May 12, 2009 3:30 PM

BOYCOTT iPhone Slingplayer, $30? Crippled software should be priced that way. $9.99 #iphone_slingplayer_boycott

Above is my lame attempt on Twitter to start a revolt. I'm not real happy with Sling/AT&T/Apple in this particular order. All parties have a little culpability in how this has been handled from the start.

They show off a demo at CES, I play/see it there (I was there at their booth taking to them about this), I think get baited for the "Upgrade".. I wait a month, then I hear that the old boxes will work, ehhh, sorry about that.. And now it won't work where I will actually use it -- out of my house/office.

I would probably buy the WIFI-only version for $9.99, but it's not worth $30 to me.. I am already jailbroken and will wait to see what happens on that front.

I wanted to pay for this, crazy me.. But not like this and for this amount.

May 12, 2009 3:31 PM

why pay 30 bucks if i cant use it everywhere. hopefully it will change and work over 3G.

May 12, 2009 3:48 PM

$30? I didn't know it was going to be that high.
Not sure I'm buying it now.

May 12, 2009 3:52 PM

My old Treo 700wx (Sprint) had no issue streaming my Slingbox feed over a 3g network. AT&T fail!

May 12, 2009 3:58 PM

$ling Media has mishandled this situation from the start.

I now could care less whether this application will work with my $lingbox Classic -- I've already unplugged the thing and wrapped it up for garbage recycling day here in Japan.

So long $ling, hello Hava!
