Engadget: AT&T issues official statement on SlingPlayer's 3G blackout for iPhone

One can only imagine the intense outpouring of hatred AT&T must have received from customers immediately following the announcement that the iPhone SlingPlayer will be not be able to stream video using AT&T's data network. While it hasn't exactly been declared by anyone that AT&T is to blame for the apparent lack of 3G support, they are the only one with something to gain by a Wi-Fi only SlingPlayer. It doesn't take much to come to this conclusion.

Our friends at Engadget have managed to squeeze a statement out of AT&T regarding the 3G blackout:

"Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs.

That said, we don't restrict users from going to a Web site that lets them view videos. But what our terms and conditions prohibit is the transferring, or slinging, of a TV signal to their personal computer or smartphone.

The Slingbox application for the iPhone runs on WiFi. That's good news for AT&T's iPhone 3G customers, who get free WiFi access at our 20,000 owned and operated hot spots in the U.S., including Starbucks, McDonalds, Barnes & Noble, hotels, and airports. AT&T is the industry leader in WiFi."

We're not surprised AT&T went straight to their Terms of Service as defense. We were highly suspect when they initially changed their lingo to outright ban placeshifting from their network. Sure, they "retracted it," but then added back a more generic version of their placeshifting restriction that (we thought) seemed intentionally vague. The reality: a lawyer told them a 'personal computer' could be interpreted as any mobile device with computing functions (that's all of them by the way). Why look bad by saying placeshifting is outright banned when you can look less bad by tossing out a BS generic line that's open to interpretation? Better yet, without clarity in their definition, they can enforce it with zero consistency.

We highly recommend reading Engadget's comments on the statement as well, which we're also inclined to agree with.

My daughter is a fresh out of college TV reporter for a CBS station in Rock Island Ill. we live in R.I. We watch her every day on her sling box that she bought for us for xmas this year. I will drop ATT as soon as the Iphone offers other providers without jail breaking my phone. I had been a loyal Verizon customer for 15 years without any problems. ATT has not been nearly as accomidating as Verizon, not to mention poor coverage. Shame on you ATT, I have waited patiently for the sling box app. only to find out that ATT does not want to play!!!! Cudos to Apple for having an app bye passing ATT.

Not to worry folks. THERE IS AN ANSWER. I just bought a MiFi 3G hotspot from Verizon Wireless and can now watch my slingbox on my iPhone from anywhere I want.
Since the iPhone connects to the MiFi as a WiFi hotspot, the program allows you to watch the sling, even though your out driving in your car.
Brilliant, thanks Verizon.
BTW, the picture quality and streaming is perfect!

Not to worry? That's another $60/month and another two year contract with another carrier, great if you want to spend even more money to get the Sling to work on the iPhone because of the greedy AT&T people. But tell me, if I buy AT$T USB 3G gizmo for my laptop to Sling over their 3G network, how come that hasn't crashed the fragile AT$T network? Does AT$T think all their subscribers are slingers? Or do they worry they might become slingers and give up more coin to the deserving SlingMedia folks? They are encouraging jailbreaking by limiting Sling Mobile to 3G on the iPhone. Just wait AT$T - better get ready to ask for a bailout once your exclusive iPhone deal dries up. You'll be history.

What's the big deal? If you really have to have 3G access, then just patch your app. It's easy to do and the info is readily available on the net.

Just another corporate screw job. You sell me on something then take it away. ATT-Stop sending me information on the iPhone and quit pushing me to buy it. You suck, you know it and you tried to blame Apple and Sling. ATT doesn't even have the balls to tell me the truth on the phone. They will lose me as a customer and some people, you just don't want to lose. I have a big mouth and I can pass the word pretty far. F U ATT and your sh***y, weak ass network.

While Im about to get AT&T U-verse hooked up to my apartment, Im loving how well Dish Network works with my Slingbox. (Grant L)

Hi Grant Stop DO NOT Put that At&t U Verse in your home unless you want your Phone not to work well. Watch only 1 HD at a time then Have it Lock up.
I tryed it a year ago. Then 1 of my clients tryed it end of april 09. I warned him. But he did it anyway. Same problems. But you probaly have it in by now.
As to the I-Phone not slinging. That is one reason I may have bought it even though the phone systems drops a lot. But I wonder about watching CCTV cameras.
I just read about a tech company that is using software for up to 6 cameras. Giving access to people and First responders to check out a road or the location of a problem.
Well we will see
