Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac Public Beta Released

Sling Media first talked about their OS X web player for Sling.com back at CES, which was poised to bring HD streaming and other 2.0 features to Mac owners. Their lofty goal of Q1 has come and gone, but Sling has finally opened up their efforts to OS X users in what they're calling a "sneak peek" of the OS X Web Player Plugin. It's available for download now at Sling.com.

According to the company, the Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac is beta software lacking features and functionality that will be present in the final product. However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything new for Mac owners. In fact, the web player beta delivers the core functionality Mac based Slingers have been hoping fo, like HD streaming, live pause, Sling Accounts, and the program guide.

As beta software, there are still several missing features and limitations that Slingers should be aware of. For starters, the beta lacks proxy support and any form of conflict management (meaning you can't take over a Slingbox in use with your admin password). There are also performance limitations/decryption problems that could limit streaming speed to 500kbps on WAN.

Sling is also alluding to some stabillity imperfections with the Mac web player. Users are advised to close all important browser windows and tabs while streaming, "just to be safe." According to our sources who've tried the player, "It will occasionally crash your browser."

The bad news, for some, is that the Web Player for Mac supports only the Slingbox PRO HD, Slingbox PRO, and Slingbox SOLO. Sling Media says their plugin requires the use of h.264, which the older Slingboxes do not support. Sling is still offering a $50 upgrade incentive to Classic, Tuner, and AV owners toward the purchase of a Slingbox PRO HD or SOLO. Full System requirements below.

System Requirements:

  • Intel-based Mac
  • 10.5 OS or higher
  • Safari 3
  • FF 3
  • 1Gb free Ram
  • Latest Slingbox firmware required

Sweet! Too bad all it does is crash all my browsers, safari and FF alike. Cannot even get it to run on two different machines.

But, this IS progress!

June 4, 2009 2:10 PM

It is getting there. Definitely works better aka crashes less under Safari than Firefox. I am getting tops 600kbps. Buffer works great. I actually have few tabs open and it is working fine.

June 4, 2009 6:04 PM

I can even connect. I used the admin and play only password and doesn't work.

Any idea.

Does not support Safari 4, sling is really beginning to tick me off.

June 4, 2009 8:49 PM

use the user agent work around to get safari 4 to work, but of course It only crashes on both safari and FF for me.

I used the user agent work around and it now works for me! The video is great but the audio sounds like it has an echo!

In your Safari preferences go to advanced and select "Show Developer Menu on Menu bar" or whatever it says.  Then in the developer menu, choose the user agent to be "Safari 3.2.1"  Then reload the Sling.com live TV page and load the plug-in.  Once the plug-in is loaded, you will no longer need to set the user agent to the old version of Safari.  It works fine under Safari 4.

You beat me to the reply!

The audio is a bit crappy right now.  Expect that to get better soon.

FYI, I think the H.264 excuse that Sling gave to Matt about not supporting the legacy players is pure rubbish. The Pro and Solo models don't support H.264 and if they did, I can't imagine why Sling would not have use H.264 for the iPhone player then as they wouldn't have had to write a codec for WMV. Looks like smoke and mirrors to me!

Downloaded the plug-in into Safari 4 using the user agent trick. I can hear the audio and video works in full screen, but does not work in small screen. In Firefox, everything works fine. Any ideas?

They are capable - just not as powerful/efficient as PRO-HD.

I get no remote. Actually it's transparent. Switching to basic remote it shows up. Sound is off by a couple seconds.

They may be "capable" but the current firmware only supports WMV otherwise if it supported H.264, it was stupid of Sling to release the iPhone software with WMV streaming.

I am not aware of any box other than the ProHD supporting H.264 with current firmware. Not saying anything about hardware capability here.

Everything connected perfectly for me. Only an audio synch issue here. Oddly in the few times I've run it sometimes the audio plays before the video and sometimes the video plays before the audio. I would have figured it would only be one way or the other. And I was getting around 650kbps.

You guys talking about this picture?

If so, it's from the CSI: intro. You can watch that demo at Sling.com, I grabbed this frame toward the end of the video.

I take it the web plugin does not take advantage of GPU acceleration?
Running on a brand new macbook pro, and it's eating my processor alive! No way this will be useable on battery if it stays this way.

Anyone have info on gpu support?
