Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac Public Beta Released

Sling Media first talked about their OS X web player for Sling.com back at CES, which was poised to bring HD streaming and other 2.0 features to Mac owners. Their lofty goal of Q1 has come and gone, but Sling has finally opened up their efforts to OS X users in what they're calling a "sneak peek" of the OS X Web Player Plugin. It's available for download now at Sling.com.

According to the company, the Web Based SlingPlayer for Mac is beta software lacking features and functionality that will be present in the final product. However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything new for Mac owners. In fact, the web player beta delivers the core functionality Mac based Slingers have been hoping fo, like HD streaming, live pause, Sling Accounts, and the program guide.

As beta software, there are still several missing features and limitations that Slingers should be aware of. For starters, the beta lacks proxy support and any form of conflict management (meaning you can't take over a Slingbox in use with your admin password). There are also performance limitations/decryption problems that could limit streaming speed to 500kbps on WAN.

Sling is also alluding to some stabillity imperfections with the Mac web player. Users are advised to close all important browser windows and tabs while streaming, "just to be safe." According to our sources who've tried the player, "It will occasionally crash your browser."

The bad news, for some, is that the Web Player for Mac supports only the Slingbox PRO HD, Slingbox PRO, and Slingbox SOLO. Sling Media says their plugin requires the use of h.264, which the older Slingboxes do not support. Sling is still offering a $50 upgrade incentive to Classic, Tuner, and AV owners toward the purchase of a Slingbox PRO HD or SOLO. Full System requirements below.

System Requirements:

  • Intel-based Mac
  • 10.5 OS or higher
  • Safari 3
  • FF 3
  • 1Gb free Ram
  • Latest Slingbox firmware required

Plugin only seems to work in full screen mode. I don't get any video in a regular browser window, audio works fine in either mode though.

Anyone else having this issue?

I've seen reports of this but have not seen it myself.

Thanks for the reply. I know it's a beta, hopefully development moves quickly from here. The web plug in is already better than I was expecting.

Man, I am still surprised that I CANNOT get this thing to work. I have tried all THREE of my macs, including an older imac that has the original safari 3.02 or whatever is on it.

Safari, FF, safari 4 (set to dev and older code header) It ALL crashes.

I would just point out though, that APPLE released earlier this week SAFARI 4 but NOT in beta, so MANY people are going to be upgrading to Safari 4 as a point of software update and then not be able to use this one.

Well, my feeling is that Sling dropped the ball on this one and released this too early. It's obviously working very different for different people. I've had no problems with running it on beta versions of Safari 4 (haven't tried it on the release version yet). Yet others like TB here can't run it at all. Still others get no video unless they are in full screen mode. It's been out a couple weeks now and no new updates from Sling which is somewhat odd considering that a public beta should first of all work nearly 90 to 95 percent of the time and there should be frequent updates. But considering that Sling.com has been in beta for nearly a year (or is my memory bad), I'm not hopeful. At least the majority of Sling.com works. Leaving sites in "beta" is the new "cool" and "Google" way of doing things. BLECH!

Yeah, my browser crashes EVERY time I try. On both Safari and Firefox!

Not sure if this was mentioned already...but one thing I noticed is that if you type in the wrong password, your browser will crash instantly. Every time.
At least that's what happened to me.

If you are using different passwords for the admin and view only mode, try using both passwords and seeing if one works for you. Once I logged in with "root" level password, it worked ok for me.

I guess I get the install, but it then crashes every browser I have, so we're not THAT much further ahead.

Is anyone else having issues with widescreen video being smooshed to 4:3?
