The Register: Baseball, Yes. Sling Media, No. - AT&T Playing iPhone Streaming Favorites

AT&T has been facing some harsh criticism over their continued push to disallow placeshifting to the iPhone over their 3G network, going so far as modifying their Terms of Use (twice) to specifically ban the practice. Yet, not even a month later, Apple gives the MLB "At Bat 2009" app for iPhone free reign over the 3G network, letting iPhone users stream Baseball games to their handsets.

Rik Myslewski' recent post to The Register goes one step further, indicating that AT&T is playing favorites when it comes to who gets to use the 3G network for streaming video. What's worse, thanks to AT&T's exclusivity agreement for the iPhone, it looks like they're pretty well protected says Rik.

What do you think about AT&T playing favorites? Should the MLB streaming app also be denied 3G access?

AT&T WILL GET THEIRS! They are now the network everyone hates. Instead of being indifferent, we will all go as soon as we can. They are only making stupid short sighted choices.

I think with the MLB app, they can better CONTROL the streaming, either by requiring it by MLB servers or the app itself.

Whereas, with the slingbox, it is hard to control what the user can stream. If I have a 1MB pipe at home, I could stream UP 1MB and down 1MB and use a lot of the 3G bandwidth at any given tower.

It's got nothing to do with the volume. On the audio side they allow WunderRadio to stream via WiFi and 3G while a small app Jewish Radio is only allowed to stream via WiFi.

The only thing that surprises me is that people are surprised. "Money talks, bullsh*t walks".

Maybe folks should switch to rivals if they can! In the UK, 3 Mobile's X Series Gold phone plan specifically allows unlimited streaming from your Slingbox for 80 HOURS of each contract month! Cool
