V1.1 of SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone Hits the App Store - No 3G Streaming for Anyone
Categories: News, Rumors and Gossip iPhone / iPod Touch Mobile Phones / Portable Devices

The word on the street last week was that Sling was looking to push through an updated version of the popular, yet controversial, iPhone SlingPlayer app through the App Store. Rumor had it v1.1 would offer up enhanced control of Dish Network receivers, full screen support for 16:9 material, and 3G streaming capability for anyone outside of AT&T's US cellular empire.
The new SlingPlayer app has just hit the App store, and it turns out all had been true... except for the 3G part apparently. According to our friends over at Engadget, Sling has apparently submitted a 3G version for use outside the US (contrary to what we've heard through the grapevine, but have been unable to verify), but is still held up in Apple's "keep-ya-guessing" approval process.
In any event, there's an updated app waiting for you ($30 for new users, free for those running 1.0). Give it a whirl, and tell us your thoughts in the comments area below.

BTW, love the advertisement on this page. Since I am a BBerry user. :)
It's a free upgrade. The sling.com integration for dish users is really well done, and the fixes to the remote control were really needed. So far, I'm enjoying it.
3.0 only. i think that is why. As an ipod touch user it is pretty tough for me to pony up $10 for copy and paste. How much better is it?
3.0 is WAY better. It's worth it.
And the 1.1 version of SlingPlayer blows the 1.0 version out of the water. It's really good...

For anyone wondering - yes it still works with AV streams. Will have to test 3G unrestrictor today but don't anticipate issues...

Worst update ever 16:9 format doesn't work and swiping your fingers to change channels doesn't work as well. What a useless update
Uh 16:9 does work. You need to change your aspect ratio in the menu. I've even gone so far to physically measure the aspect ratio to make sure they got it correct and it is indeed 16:9.
Secondly, changing channels by swiping fingers is turned off by default in user preferences. You can turn it back on.
I would suggest playing with the software a bit b4 you make allegations that simply aren't correct.

I'm having issues getting full screen. Someone on the forum said it might be because im running composite cables instead of component
Anyone running composite cables getting full screen?

I can understand the confusion but let's look at the true format of the video signals here.
All video on composite cables is in 480i format. That is it is 640x480 with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Any 16:9 content inside that 4:3 frame is letter boxed to fit. So the only way to get 16:9 content to fit properly in a 16:9 window is to zoom the 4:3 image and crop the top and bottom which is black in letter box. I haven't messed with aspect ratio settings on the new software much yet, so I'm not sure if there's a "good" solution or not. Best is probably to see if your DVR has any zoom or aspect ratio functions to force the screen to be filled.
Component cables can be in any format up to 1080p. So component cables CAN handle a true 16:9 frame size. That is what the 16:9 aspect ratio setting on the iPhone does - it properly sizes a true 16:9 frame on the phone.

I just got the 1.1, and have an AV connected to Verizon FIOS HD dvr. There are a number of viewing options in the new iphone slingplayer that not available. It only toggles between
Much better. It takes two seconds to buffer and in finally fits the screen. I like that I can turn of the channel swipe. Now I can clean my screen without distrupting my program viewing. I'm not holding out hope for 3G in the US anytime soon. I think I'm finally going to jailbreak. Any caveats I should be aware of before doing so (besides the obvious of watching my usage)? Is redsn0w the preferable method?

redsn0w is the easiest method. If you are running 3.0.1, you'll need the 3.0 IPSW file to do the jailbreak. I forget where it's saved in Windows but on the Mac it's in ~/LIbrary/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates.

Cool, thanks. I'm Mac so that'll work.
Does v1.1 work fine on jailbroken phones running tricker3g? Would like to know before I take the plunge! V 1.0 has been working fine I so don't want to upset it all!
SlingBox Classic (in UK - connected to Virgin V+ DVR) => SlingCatcher (US)

Dunno. I think video quality is same or better as before. Try rebooting your phone. Sometimes the phone has a memory leak which ends up making apps run slower than they should. That could cause problems....Other than that, I don't know.
