Sling Unwraps Updates for PC and Mac SlingPlayer

Sling Media may seem to be spending more time on their web-based version of the SlingPlayer software, but it looks like they've also been giving the desktop player a little love as well. New builds are available for both SlingPlayer for PC and SlingPlayer for Mac, taking each iteration up a minor tick.

Based on what we've gathered, Sling's not adding the world here. SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.4 and SlingPlayer for Mac 1.0.10 appear mostly to be a maintenance upgrade intended to squash a few bugs in the player and firmware, update the remote control base for Macs, and fix some connectivity problems. The PC player, however, has gotten a few extra goodies that are worth mentioning.

For starters, users of specific netbooks (namely certain hardware revs of Dell's Mini 10 for now, like the Dell Mini 1010) may be able to take advantage of a new hardware acceleration feature in the menu. If the option's grayed out, your netbook isn't currently supported, but those who can use it should enjoy improved performance when running SlingPlayer. From the looks of things, this is only the beginning, and may be extended to more netbooks and computers over time.

Next is something everyone with a current model Slingbox can enjoy, which has to deal with "improved remote connectivity in certain cases." Essentially, using the new firmware for the Slingbox PRO, PRO-HD and SOLO along with the new player, users behind a restrictive firewall trying to establish a remote connection should have greater success.

The latter is something we'll have to take Sling's word on for now, but if you've typically had a hard time connecting to your box behind firewalls, hit us up in the comments section and let us know if it's working any better for you.

For you technical folks, here's the skinny of all the software and firmware versions hitting today:

  • SP PC - 2.0.4 (.521)
  • SP Mac - 1.0.10 (.271)
  • SOLO FW - 1.3.0.70
  • PRO FW - 1.3.0.80
  • PRO-HD FW - 1.3.0.170

Hit the upgrade button when prompted by the player, or download the latest build directly from Slingbox.com.

Regarding the firewall issue; they have added the ability in the PC and web version to sling without the need for port forwarding. This is a huge upgrade in my opinion.

With the number of questions regarding port forwarding in the forums they must have taken it very seriously. This should resolve a ton of problems.

But it may also cause a few because the legacy boxes, phones and the catcher still require the TCP port forward so there may be cases where you can connect on your computer but not on your phone or catcher.

I've been having problems with Snow Leopard and lockups. Ran the new updated software for over an hour with no problems.

Slingplayer Mobile is finally compatible with my BlackBerry Tour after this last update. Ecstatic!!

So the Mac version is still the 1.0.9? What is the deal? Anyone know?

    October 29, 2009 12:46 PM

Have you considered looking at the site? The Mac version is now at 1.0.10.267 or something like that.

    October 29, 2009 12:59 PM

Correct the article says the 1.0.10 but the download page and the actual download are still both 1.0.9

    October 29, 2009 9:57 PM

I am seeing 1.0.10 on the download page.

Would've been nice to add High Def streaming to the new Mac update of sling player....cant wait!!! Sling.com HD streaming doesnt work on Snow Leopard!

    October 30, 2009 3:17 AM

    no linux version, still waiting...

The new client also prompts to upgrade the firmware (in my case the PRO-HD). What does the new firmware bring/fix? There's no mention anywhere about this.

    October 30, 2009 9:19 AM

It's mentioned in the text above... twice. "SlingPlayer for PC 2.0.4 and SlingPlayer for Mac 1.0.10 appear mostly to be a maintenance upgrade intended to squash a few bugs in the player and firmware, update the remote control base for Macs, and fix some connectivity problems." and "Essentially, using the new firmware for the Slingbox PRO, PRO-HD and SOLO along with the new player, users behind a restrictive firewall trying to establish a remote connection should have greater success."

That's all we know, and likely all that Sling will share.

That's actually not all that uncommon. Sometimes Sling will give users the upgrade notification through SlingPlayer before the updated release is reflected on their website.

Oh no, another firmware upgrade, I am now out of the country and nobody to care of bussiness close to my PRO-HD !!!!!!

And again the annoying reminder, have to cross my fingers and forbid anyone here to press the update now button by mistake !!!!!

When this geeks will develop a firmware upgrade that does not require a guided initial setup and keep the ones already made as it is in many other devices ?

    November 2, 2009 11:43 AM

    WYSIWYG,

Any succes in France? I'm going there and want to avoid these constent IP issues. Guys, sligbox costed me so much money trying to fix remote that I diconnected it....

    November 2, 2009 12:31 PM

    Reklov,

I applied the update to my Slingbox PRO-HD remotely (which isn't recommended, but took a chance anyway) and it applied successfully. It also totally resolved the speed issues I was experiencing here at home. I'm happy now :-)

These updates add little if anything.

What sling SHOULD prioritize on is ending the disjointed nature of the SlingCatcher and SlingDirectory.

I should be able to, WITHOUT resorting to sling.com, add, edit and delete a Slingbox in my directory.

    It is SO fundamental.

Then, while sling.com is crawling along, they come out with a parallel slingbox.com? I am so confused. Why not finish what you started?

Interesting too ... here .. I'll start a rumor ... Best Buy has SlingCatchers on sale for $99. DOES THIS MEAN that there's a new Catcher coming out?

    November 2, 2009 4:28 PM

I meant manage my SlingDirectory from within my SlingCatcher!
