Your TV does not need to be on - just the video source. So, if you are connecting it to a TiVo for example, the TiVo must be powered on. You should have no worries with waking the kids!

This looks like an incredible device. I travel all the time and this would work perfect. I have one question. When I remotely access my tv on my laptop, does the TV have to be turned on at my house? Also, what about the volume level when accessing the TV, if it must be on at my house, can I turn the volume off and then control the volume through my PC. I ask this because I don't want to wake up my little girls or freak everybody out when accessing from the road. Any info would be great.
Thanks,
DJ
You plug the slingbox into the output of your cable box, or dvd player, tivo, or any other media device, just as if it WERE your TV. So you don't even have to have a TV connected to the source device. You can, but it has no affect on the operation of the slingplayer.
The optimal way to use this, at least for cable, is to pay the extra 5 or 10 a month for an additional cable converter, get a coax splitter so you can use the same cable feed as the cable modem, and put it right next to your cable modem and plug it into the router/gateway's "LAN" ethernet ports, and leave the cable box on your TV for home viewing (especially if others will be watching TV at your house when you're watching remotely)
I did a search of the forums because I am having an issue with my new Sling SOLO. I have it hooked up correctly, from what I can tell, and the darn this shows no video source unless the TV is turned on. The slingbox is hooked into the actual DVR, not the TV, so shouldn't it work without the TV being on? I cannot for the life of me figure it out, and I have been at it for a week now.
You're a little bit in the wrong forum but do a search for HDCP and post in one of those threads..
