"Message from the SlingCommunity Team:

It has come to our attention that two members involved in this forum may be affiliated with the TV2ME company, a partner, or distributor. The SlingCommunity Team has been unsuccessful in trying to contact members "jessijohnson" and "markwalrus", as each member's e-mail address has already been deactivated.

The SlingCommunity Team, as an independent third party, respects your opinion and freedom of speech, and considers SlingCommunity to be an open forum. While we encourage the open and frank discussions regarding competitive products to the Slingbox, it is our policy that anyone choosing to take part in these discussions must make any product affiliations known to the community.

If you believe someone is not being honest in this regard, please report them by using our feedback tool, and we will do our best to follow up.

Thank you,
The SlingCommunity Team"

SlingMedia claims that it 'enables you to watch your TV programming from wherever you are by turning virtually any Internet-connected PC into your personal TV." I had a hard time swallowing that after I saw the its performance.

Any reasonable consumer would assume that when an Internet-connected PC becomes a personal TV, that it would somewhat resemble television (picture quality, full-motion picture, etc.) This is, however, not the case with SlingMedia.

What's sad is that the positive feedback Sling has received is because the people reviewing it haven't tested it over long distances. Sure it looks okay when you're running it across a 1.5 Mbps LAN, but what about when you're halfway around the world?

Seriously, get out of the office and see what happens when you check out Sling a few miles from the source over a Wi-Fi connection. Then give your reviews about this $250 novelty. As is, I can't see this being anything more than a candidate for "the must-have gadget that is most likely to get shelved in three days."

So how does one get a TV-quality picture? TV2Me. It's more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Schaffer, the guy who invented it, let me watch TV from Moscow and the quality was much better than Sling. This actually looked like TV.

I just read a blog about a guy watching Tel Aviv TV with this thing on an airplane to New York:

http://novaspivack.typepad.com/nova_spivacks_weblog/2005/10/...

That's impressive. I'd like to see Sling try something like that.

Many of us have used Slingbox from all corners of the world with outstanding results. The latest builds of Slingbox have vastly improved performance from a distance (as well as close in). Slingbox also works with any broadband connection.

Let's see TV2ME impress Mossberg and then I might pull my eyes away from my Sling stream.

The link above only mentions TV2ME streaming live TV? The real trick is streaming and controlling a myriad of video sources with full control. I'm only interested in time and place shifting together (which I do with Tivo/Sling combined).

Finally, Schaffer better have his act together as he's going to have a hard time outpacing Jeremy, Blake and the rest of the Sling support team. They are outstanding.

They want $4,750 for the TV2ME box! Their Tivo control only ($295)is more than a Slingbox. Who is the target buyer of this product?

SatFACTS Review of Slingbox: "It looks like how a fart sounds in church." Amen. (http://www.zanecochran.com/blog/tv2me/satfacts.pdf)

The difference between Slingbox and TV2Me is the market strategy. Sling sacrifices quality to sell to the masses. According to Schaffer, inventor of the TV2Me: "I'm not interested in the mass marketing of anonymous customers."

Oh and Mossberg is an idiot. Not only is he a sloppy journalist, but he also falls in rank with those who have fallen in love with the idea of watching TV anywhere in the world and has lost complete sight of what's important: that what you watch actually looks like TV.

$5000 for the tv2me unit with tivo control VS. $250 for the sling player.

I bought this unit to watch some "home" tv while traveling.

I'm not running a "remote" movie theater and charging my friends and family an admission charge.

No comparison...SlingBox wins...hands down.

This same guy posted the exact same message on
the Slingbox 411 forums under a different name.

Perhaps he works for tv2me???

"Granted, not everyone here is in a position to shell out $5K, but let's just agree that it's the difference between a Yugo and a Porsche: you get what you pay for."
Why would someone even bother to come into a company's hosted forum to trash their product, then post a caveat that defeats their own argument. I smell a troll. (Sheesh!)

October 24, 2005 9:07 PM

On the other forum you call yourself "markwalrus", so I was just going with that name.

October 24, 2005 10:41 PM

I took a look at the TV2ME website and have a few questions:

1) Does the quality really look like this:
http://tv2me.com/quality.swf ? If so, then it doesn't look at all like an upgrade vs. SlingBox.

2) Beyond the "get what you pay for" stuff, why is it so expensive? The website says that it's a Pentium based appliance -- is there something else there with respect to hardware/materials?

3) jessijohnson & markwalrus - do you have some interest in TV2ME beyond being happy consumers? If not, then please understand why people are skeptical that two people would join the forum within hours of each other and then start piling on about why a competitor's product is "all that." If so, it's OK, but you really should disclose your affiliation.

Thanks
bb

Jessi/Mark/He/She/It?,

Thanks for the lively discussion. Someone speaking out of turn really keeps things interesting.

Come on over to Korea and watch my OKC locals on my Sling Box. Quality is great! My Yugo is really taking care of me. Porsche is in the shop again.

I have had my SB for about 2 months. I traveled 700 miles to work in Miss during hurricane Katrina. The cable was out in the hotel, but they had high speed internet. I hooked up my laptop via S-video to the big screen in the lounge, with some desktop speakers we "borrowed" from the managers computer and watched football. I didn't hear one complaint from all the guys able to catch the ballgame during the little time we had off from working. It worked great and they were sad to see me leave at the end of the second week. I even used it on the road for myself during the day watching the weather channel via a 1xRTT connection. It worked just fine for me. I use it at work here everyday on EVDO and streaming around 500k on the road. I couldn't ask for anything better. I'm glad I own one.

Folks, please don't feed the trolls.

Especially rich and spoiled trolls who can't understand why most folks don't just buy jet airliners and are really happy driving their cars.

Can't help myself...had to share a quote from an article provided by the troll: "TV2me isn't a commercial product
that's being mass produced — yet. Sales
have been limited to a few systems
Schaffer has sold to friends and acquaintances."

From:

Nice traction.

Also, this is starting to feel like a real forum. Exciting!!

October 26, 2005 12:49 AM

This goes above and beyond!!!

1180 for one new laptop, all in one printer, wireless g router, slingbox, dvd burner (for tower) and 25 free blank dvds.....
2 hours unpacking and installing above mentioned c***.
Feeling of immense satisfaction at Border's while I sip a mocha and watch the evil Fox on my new laptop and make rude comments about the commentators while others look and stare...PRICELESS!!!!!!!!

(oh, and 180 in rebates for 1180 in electronics...satisfaction)

How's that for a slice of fried gold?

5 grand to watch TV from a remote location? Are you f%$*#**ing kidding me! I don't think I have spent that much on Electronics in my whole life! And I am a huge computer and electronics geek! I think anyone who spends that kind of money to buy a device for watching TV outside of their home either:
1) Has waaaaay too much money on their hands, or
2) Would do better to invest that money on a good psychiatrist (just kidding).
I recently went to a hotel with my computer I just built with a Mini atx motherboard, flat panel monitor, and my slingbox software (total cost about 500.00 bucks. Watched game 2 of the World series without a hitch. Occasionally would watch CNN, and G4 tech TV. Switched channels with no problems. I think the creators of this competing device need to do a Google search for the NeoGeo gaming device. Remember that one? I didn't think so.

October 28, 2005 8:11 PM

jessijohnson,

I don't see what your intention really is here. Are you trying to tell people not to buy the Slingbox and go for the TV2ME. Or do you want to compare the two? Either one, you really don't make any sense. It's like asking people to forget about the Yugo and buy a Porshe instead. And comparing a Yugo's performance to that of a Porshe is just totally rediculous. Like you said, "you get what you pay for," and people here including myself are happy with what they pay for, so what's your point?

November 4, 2005 6:02 PM

It's all about the VALUE PROPOSITION. With Slingbox, it's there in spades. Sure, everyone can appreciate better performance--but this isn't a "cost no object" game. No one--not one single person here or anywhere else--is going to say "Damn Slingbox PQ sucks compared to this thing... I'm returning it and spending the $5k!" Give it up...

Since I don't have a Slingbox as I am in the UK where it is unavailable I can't comment about quality but one thing I can guarantee to you is that when it is released in the uk it will not cost 249 dollars but be closer to 400 dollars.
Also I notice a lot companies going on this c'mon now we are all one big happy family yet at the same time milking members for ideas, beta testing for no reward and the people don't even geddit that thye are being used but hey if they are happy.Skype communtiy comes to mind as well.Fools will suffer gladly eh.
Notwithstanding that criticism as far as I can see the Slingbox team have at least tried to come up with somehting affordable for the ordinary Joe.
So any critics of the product should just get on a plane to India find some good cheap coders and then go to China and get the hardware made. I know the fairtraders probalby won't like that but remember in this global world it is all about the cheapest bowl of rice.
I say well done to the Slingboxteam.
Why I may even have ago myself.;)
