flypitcher: Some of us throw ideas at slingmedia because we own the product and would like to see it improved. More people with more ideas means more ideas get put into the product than if it were just a team of developers sitting around an office tossing ideas around. While there are many evil, nefarious or greedy corporations out there, I think I'll give a pass to slingmedia. I get the feeling they're on their second round of financing and are taking a decent amount of personal and professional risks right now trying to grow into something bigger.
Worry about them when they go for their third round of financing (or decide to IPO), that's when outsiders will come in and change the corporate culture into the soul-less greed machine that every good company seems to turn into once the principles cash out or are forced out by the angels and second round financers (most succesfully ventured companies end up getting screwed by the big guys when they hit the third round, because that's when the big guys realize the company is going to make money, then they want it all because "it was their money in the first place"). Not that I wish that on Slingmedia, it's just what I've experienced and others I know have encountered as well. Like, start with a 40% stake, end up with a 15% stake, then find out well, actually it's only going to be 3% after dilution, and well, hey, oops, we forgot to give the guy that did all the hard work a little scratch for his troubles. Happens more often than people want to believe. I know 5 people, personally, that have had this happen. Luckily only in small ventures with only a half million or maybe up to 2 million in venture capital. (which is why a well-trusted lawyer is the first partner to take on before going after vc money, even angels can get greedy once the potential is realized.)

SlingMedia claims that it 'enables you to watch your TV programming from wherever you are by turning virtually any Internet-connected PC into your personal TV." I had a hard time swallowing that after I saw the its performance.
Any reasonable consumer would assume that when an Internet-connected PC becomes a personal TV, that it would somewhat resemble television (picture quality, full-motion picture, etc.) This is, however, not the case with SlingMedia.
What's sad is that the positive feedback Sling has received is because the people reviewing it haven't tested it over long distances. Sure it looks okay when you're running it across a 1.5 Mbps LAN, but what about when you're halfway around the world?
Seriously, get out of the office and see what happens when you check out Sling a few miles from the source over a Wi-Fi connection. Then give your reviews about this $250 novelty. As is, I can't see this being anything more than a candidate for "the must-have gadget that is most likely to get shelved in three days."
So how does one get a TV-quality picture? TV2Me. It's more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Schaffer, the guy who invented it, let me watch TV from Moscow and the quality was much better than Sling. This actually looked like TV.
I just read a blog about a guy watching Tel Aviv TV with this thing on an airplane to New York:
http://novaspivack.typepad.com/nova_spivacks_weblog/2005/10/...
That's impressive. I'd like to see Sling try something like that.
As for marky mark the walrus and his alter-ego jessijohnson, seek counseling, you need to get those personalities joined, or at least discard one, schizophrenia is a bad thing. Yes, it's obvious that you are one person, probably the guy that makes the TV2me ripoff, or someone promised a discount, commission or kickback for trashing the one product that makes TV2ME a no-go for just about EVERY potential "space shifting appliance" customer.
Yes, in a perfect world, where money was no object, we'd all have a Carrera 4 GT as our daily commuter. hmm, actually, I think still most rational people would still opt for practical, not flashy. Besides, just because you put a porsche price-tag on a yugo, it doesn't make it better than a yugo. The comparison images on TV2me's site doesn't impress me one bit. I wouldn't pay $50 more to get MORE pixelly video, let alone $4,750 more. Is that a Yugo with leather seats and a porsche emblem taped to the hood that you have there?
I've not turned on a TV in my house since I got the slingbox 4 months ago. I watch it at home rather than be tied to the rooms where I have TVs, I watch it at work in downtown DC, I watch it at my friend's condo in Reston Va, I've taken it to New York City on business, and I let my parents watch the nightly news every morning when they were in Berlin, Prague and Budapest a few weeks ago (because they couldn't deal with the straight news you get outside the US, they were going through propoganda withdrawal, they were starting to see the truth, and it's quite scary to those of us who've never been exposed to it at home before. It's a whole different reality in the real world outside the US).
It works great. Either you (I'm referring to both of your logins) have an agenda, or you have a really poorly equipped computer, with a really anemic video card and not enough memory.
I have an idea!
Don't spend $5000 on TV2me. Instead, buy a slingbox, and spend the other $4,750 on a computer that can handle post-20th century applications like high quality streaming video. Buy TWO! Get TWO slingboxes and TWO decent computers! (or get a laptop AND a desktop) Two, two, two treats in one.
Holy crap... how did I miss this topic?! $5000? Sounds like K2B Inc. is looking for investors, not customers.

TV2me is described as a "Dell PC with a custom video capture card." w00t
Jesse did a google search for SlingBox and cut and paste his rant into every forum he could find. Why would he do this? Perhaps because his headers on an unrelated post contains "TV2ME".
TV2ME is full of exaggerated half-truths and with the success of SlingBox, his box is worthless.
Boris
It is too bad when a competitor's product doesn't live up to the hype that they have to come in and try to build up bad vibes against the better product.
I am currently in England and have been watching my Direct TV connection that sits on my desk in Los Angeles for the past week. I have had zero problems. The picture is great. I can change channels at will. I have also tried it on multiple connections in the UK, all via wireless to my laptop. I have had no problems. I would like to be able to place a sling box in the UK and watch my Sky TV programming back in LA. I was able to blow up a Sling box I brought from the states for that purpose. I would also like to see the Mac software made available. So I can stop carrying 2 laptops. One for business and one for my Slinging. I have looked at this supposed other solution TV2me. It costs $4,000.00 it is now obsolete. I would recommend that the gentlemen placing these bogus postings go and do something with their product that will make it competitive to Sling Media rather than trying to convince people that they should pay the extra $4,000.00 to buy a product that is so obviously obsolete. I also don't like the fact that these people are lying about Sling media and then expect us to believe them when they say their product is so much better. If they can lie about Sling media I bet they would have no problem lying about their own product.
Some of us can afford $5K but choose the sling option. I travel about 24-40 weeks a year including some weekends. I purchased the sling to watch my Steelers abroad and it has worked great. If I had a need for home theater when I travel then I might consider the more expensive alternative. But I they won't let me carry on my 50 inch plasma, so i think that I'll pass for now.
The only possible advantage that TV2Me might have over SlingBox is for use as a cable head-end in places like diplomatic compounds and military bases - I mention them as they're usually treated as national territory of the country in question, so there's less of a rights issue.
Eventually there should be something that can allow you to watch SlingBox on your TV set, just like there are analog telephone adapters for people who want to make and receive internet calls without your computer switched on.
Maybe something like this: http://www.lamabox.com/index.php?opti...
flypitcher: while people in the UK might well be charged pounds for what people are paying in dollars, there's still the option buying in other European countries when the PAL/SECAM version becomes available. Getting adapters for UK three-pin electrical plugs is less hassle than NTSC-to-PAL converters.
I had to laugh when I saw this on TV2Me's website:
He watches Manchester mash Birmingham again, though he's touring Japan.
Doesn't sound very convincing: which team called 'Manchester'? Maybe City, as United wouldn't be playing Birmingham. Heck, even I know that and I could(n't) care less about the game - although anyone who does and wants Sky Sports is welcome to make enquiries.
Hmm, have to agree looking at that picture which was supposedly good quality - it was rubbish! If that's a Porsche, it's a very expensive broken one!
I can't wait for the Sling to come to the UK, only just stumbled on it today and it will definitely be on my list of "must haves" for 2006 when it arrives here.
Oh, by the way Ken, Man Utd, Man City and Birmingham are all in the Premiership this season so any of them could be playing each other in the league. But you're right, whoever wrote that piece obviously doesn't have a clue - Manchester (Utd or City) vs Birmingham isn't exactly one of your "classic" grudge matches!!
professor, r u really a professor? if so which university do you teach at?
My website featuring more slingbox help is at www.butkus.co.uk
No, I'm not really a professor I'm afraid. I was nicknamed "The Professor" on holiday with friends as I was reading a book whereas everyone else had magazines.
I have very intelligent friends as you may have guessed.
Another good question is, who has a 1.5Mbs LAN these days? They clearly spent so much on the TV2Me they can't afford a new switch and are stuck with one from the 70s!
Does this person know anything?!
Thanks professor, I stand corrected. It reminds me of the ad that Budweiser's running in the UK about sponsoring the 'Prem-eer League': 'Man United AND Man City? Why not create Team Manchester? The names are a little dull - how about Ports-mouth [sic] Pirates? And does London need so many clubs? Why not move Arsenal to the Peak District - they NEED a good team..'
Anyway, my plug for the Lamabox was a bit premature, as it's Linux-based, and SlingBox don't do Linux...
Obviously, the reference to "1.5Mbs LAN " meant a LAN connected to a T1....
Ah yes, obvious now I think about it. Now I am the one who does not know anything!!
I hereby rescind my professorship!
Still saying that, anyone still use T1 leased lines anymore?! Haven't heard of any being used for quite some time now what with ATM et al...
I don't know what costs $5K on that TV2ME but here is the PC that they are using for a mere $350
http://www.efranchiseusa.com/item/Asu...
Why would anyone want to spend 5K for something that can be done for $50? If you have that kind of bandwidth, you can just get an ATI AIW, and use the free software to stream perfect quality video over the network at 1 Mbs.
256k updload speed, what most ppl have for broadband, will get only so much quality, no matter what codec is used.
David is correct. It's all about the bandwith that NOONE has (it's the UPLOAD speed that kills it). This thing for $5k will NOT run in full quality anything without the bandwith. ON TOP OF you can get the hardware for treefitty.
Bottom line: Respect SlingBox's Authoratee!!
Atten FAA employees:
Using OpenVPN is possible through the government proxy server via TCP port 443 using either amcproxy.faa.gov:8080 or actproxy.faa.gov:8080
This has to be a JOKE! TV2Me? $5000!?!?!? How can anyone justify that? How good can it possibly be if they use a scan converter as the input? They have a side by side comparison of the competition which is completely dishonest! Get out of here, Sling is the BEST!
