SlingMedia claims that it 'enables you to watch your TV programming from wherever you are by turning virtually any Internet-connected PC into your personal TV." I had a hard time swallowing that after I saw the its performance.

Any reasonable consumer would assume that when an Internet-connected PC becomes a personal TV, that it would somewhat resemble television (picture quality, full-motion picture, etc.) This is, however, not the case with SlingMedia.

What's sad is that the positive feedback Sling has received is because the people reviewing it haven't tested it over long distances. Sure it looks okay when you're running it across a 1.5 Mbps LAN, but what about when you're halfway around the world?

Seriously, get out of the office and see what happens when you check out Sling a few miles from the source over a Wi-Fi connection. Then give your reviews about this $250 novelty. As is, I can't see this being anything more than a candidate for "the must-have gadget that is most likely to get shelved in three days."

So how does one get a TV-quality picture? TV2Me. It's more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Schaffer, the guy who invented it, let me watch TV from Moscow and the quality was much better than Sling. This actually looked like TV.

I just read a blog about a guy watching Tel Aviv TV with this thing on an airplane to New York:

http://novaspivack.typepad.com/nova_spivacks_weblog/2005/10/...

That's impressive. I'd like to see Sling try something like that.

I did not expect LDC HD quality when I bought the Sling SOLO when traveling down the road in another state using my Sprint Novatel U727.  Since all I have invested is around $300.00 anyhow.  I can watch anything I want and what I have recorded on my TimeWarner  cable tv system.  For what they are promoting for $5000.00, if I wnated LCD HD QUALITY I would buy me an LCD TV set and Subscribe to Direct TV or DISH.  WHO are these guys.  I love my SOLO and it works just fine for me and does what I want.

To whom it Concerns,

TV2ME comments are leaning toward slander. Jessi you and your TV2ME clicks are being documented so take note. We are not interested in your country club comments and your opinions are not our concerns. We here at the community are happy with our product and price and as for your product and price we're happy for you. We do'nt need unhappy customers with deep pockets.

yeah I think the main thing between TV2me and Sling is my Slingbox regardless of any problems cost me 160 bucks. TV2me costs almost 5000 dollars. Enough Said.

On the plus side, it doesn't appear as though the TV2ME stream is DRMed like the slingbox, which would allow for some hacking. For example, the stream currently won't play on an iPhone, but it looks trivial to write a man-in-the-middle script to convert it so it would. That's pretty nice.

On the (huge) downside: $5k?!!! Are you &^$! kidding me? For that kind of money I could literally hand-build 3 machines that do the exact same thing and connect them to the net for a year, and still have enough left over to pay the cable bill. And they'd be in much smaller and nicer-looking cases. Does that thing have a built-in coffee maker or something?

I think these guys are the Monster Cable of place-shifters.

There is another provider of streaming devices that is Mpeg4, has res of 704 x 576 and can add a USB hardrive to the device to allow recordings. As the recording are done straight from input device to the streaming device the bandwidth is not used.

The device can learn the IR of any remote so you can make your own IRD bin file. Bt inconvienient that they don't hava a full list of device support but at least you can make you onw files.

Also a second user can be logged on to view the stream. The Admin controls what is being whatched but a second user anywhere else in the world can log on and view.

All for less than a sling pro.

"SlingStream technology delivers up to a 400 percent video quality improvement over the original Slingbox." - sounds very promising, but I recon that they just mean that the Slingbox PRO HD can sling in HD wich the old one could not?

There are questions about streaming HD.  Some can take HDTV input at 1080I but downscale it for streaming.

Some new hardware coming out will stream 1080I in the same output at 1080

Just expect to require some serious bandwidth to get it running smoothly.

I am happy enough to just be able to sling English TV to the non English speaking countries that I often travel to..

Slingbox support sucks. Actually I wouldn't know about the actual support, since I have been trying to reach it for two days without success. The first three times I called they wouldn't answer my questions because they said my warranty had expired even though I had a current invoice and order number from THEIR store showing that I had purchased the product less than 90 days ago. When I tried to tell support that I had the invoice and order number in my hand, they wouldn't let me forward a copy of my invoice by email which would have saved a lot of time, they made me fax it to their store (closed, of course, on Sundays) and wait until THEY DECIDED TO CALL ME! Of course when they finally did call, I was at work, not home where the slingbox is, and I had to try calling them again. Cut off the first time after going through their labrynthian phone options, I called again at 6:45pm and then held for 36 MINUTES. Did I then, finally, get to speak to a tech? Of course not. I was cut off AGAIN. And this time the recording said: We're only open from 7 to 7, please call back!

I've only delt with support once so I can't say how good/bad they are - that particular issue they weren't helpfull because it was a direct result of a software change.

    I'm happy with my SlingBox...my laptop's full-screen (14" LCD) gets a better picture than my 13" TV.

I'll agree the defaults are somewhat poor quality but the slightest amount of adjustment gets an amazingly good picture almost anywhere -- even at my college's crippled-and-restricted student wireless network.

I thought the $150 sale-price Sling SOLO was a bit steep, as a college student I could never hope to afford something more than that.

I'm done with Slingbox. I've had two PRO units die on me now. It's turning out that Slingbox is more like a subscription service because you end up having to buy a new box each year as your warrantee runs out and the box dies.

    Not good SlingMedia.

Member Make sure you have it on a good power supply with backup (and/or conditioning), I've heard people say that about routers and things too. It's often because of bad power.

I keep my slingbox, router, everything on a APC UPS so if the power blips it just runs on battery for a minute. I went through 4 routers in 5 years but since putting it on a UPS I haven't had any more trouble.
