Have you checked with your cable company? Is it legal to share your cable like that?

Fredz,

You can PM me and I will gladly let you use mine since I am not really using it. I have a a single tuner DirecTV Receiver and a DirecTivo so not only can you watch something but you can even record a couple of things if you would like.

These units are used to feed the guest house and with temperatures at -18c (-1f)last night, we don't expect many guests anytime soon.

This is one of the reasons why I would really like to see a "Guest Mode" in the sling box. With a guest mode, you wouldn't be able to use the remote but it would be kind of fun to just go and watch TV from other sling boxes all over the world.

dinomite,

Not so sure about the sharing, even if it is without charging. If it is just over the air, that is one thing, but I am sure that with cable or a dish, there is something in the the terms of usage that state for personal use only. Of course they will never know, but if asked, I am sure that they would disagree with you. Once you add another user who does not live with you, then you get into the grey zone.

If anyone is still looking for a host PM me. I'm leaving to Asia for a few months and I have bandwidth to spare while I'm away so if anyone wants to watch the local stations in New York let me know. I'm flying out on December 5th so if anyone wants to make arrangements it has to be soon while I'm setting up my network.

Hmmm - although Slingbox only allows one connection point at a time, this is an interesting "gray zone" with regards to legality. What's the difference between inviting guests over to my home to watch HBO for example or me connecting a "long coax" to my set-top box, running it down the block to a friend's house and plugging it into their TV and walking away. I paid for the signal but.....??

The SlingCommunity Team would like to remind the Community that the End User License Agreement states that it is a violation to share a Finder ID, or allow access to anyone who does not reside in the same residence as the Slingbox. To avoid violating this agreement, we suggest that those who wish to test view the Slingbox do so at a local electronics store or in the company of the Slingbox owner. Sling Media is in the process of working on a demo which will allow users to "test-drive" the Slingbox; availability will be announced at SlingCommunity.com.

Sling Community Team, Are you joking?

May I point out to you that the Sling Community Team is being hypocritical as there articles written on this very website (one for example is Some Not-So-Obvious Uses for Your Slingbox) suggests uses which violate that same agreement.

I do not believe Sling Media has the right to tell me who and how I can use my slingbox. The fact Sling Media would even write such a stupid clause confuses me as they are missing out on a whole new area for marketing.

Let's us clarify the post and hopefully address your concerns:

First, our intent was to merely point out that actions described in this thread could be in violation of the Slingbox EULA. Taken literally, the EULA states what we mention above. Clearly, we are not lawyers, nor do we claim to be. You have to decide for yourself whether or not you will abide by the agreement.

Secondly, in conversing with Sling, we believe that the concern mainly pertains to the broadcast of copyrighted material of others. We asked them what the encouraged use of the Slingbox was as it related to copyrighted material of others, and got the following answer:

Streaming from a Slingbox located at a user's primary residence, viewed by the user himself or viewed by a member of his family that shares the same primary residence, only one at a time.

A key distinction here is material copyrighted by others. This was neglected in the post above.
The "Not-so-obvious..." article that you mention describes uses of the Slingbox to stream non-copyrighted content which we believe is not covered by the above statement and therefore not at issue, e.g. I am allowed to distribute public domain content to others without consequence.

We apologize for any confusion and hopes this helps clear things up a little. We welcome debate on this topic and do our best to keep everyone informed. This is clearly a touchy issue.
