I was just looking on the U3.com website and lo and behold, Slingmedia is listed as an upcoming software contributor under the audio/visual category. Does this mean that soon we'll be able to load the software onto a U3 equipped USB flashdrive and run it on any host computer? If this is true, I gotta hand it to this company. Great work!

not entirely sure, - you can do this anyway, stick the setup.exe file onto a usb flash drive, nothing special about it? (you'll still need admin priveledges to install unless im missing something crucial of what U3 do?)

In fact after reading more into it, these devices seem useless and costly in comparison to a standard flash drive :| and in some cases requires developers of the software to recode their applications to be compatible with it (and its awesomely powerful U3 API /sarcasm). If i was slingmedia, id work on getting slingplayer working on linux and create a live distro disk with it on :) (that can also hold cd runnable version for windows), that way it would be truly portable, none of this fake flash drive rip off stuff

As I understand it, U3 provides a way for applications to run directly from the flash drive, rather than having to be installed on a host PC.

If this is the case, then it seems perfect for SlingPlayer - for example, you could have a small keyring flashdrive with your SlingPlayer on it, and simply plug it into any PC to watch TV - without having to install the software on to the PC. This would be great when visting somewhere or even on public access PCs.

i think codecs need to be installed on the computer in use anyway (as it links into the operating system at a lower level, eg like drivers?) this would require admin access, in which case you might aswell install it on the local computer ...

Alot of software works straight from a regular flash drive (if you install to the flashdrive) - the only thing that isnt really stored is settings saved outside of its own directory (eg in a ini file in c:/windows/ or in the registry).

I also thought the logic behind U3 was not to leave a trace of what you're running on the host computer, and truly run the program off the flashdrive. I don't know any of the particulars, and in fact, the reality may not live up to all the hype, but imagine not having to type in your long ID finder into a host computer while you're on the road. I generally travel with my laptop, but many people will use their company's computers, friend's or family's equipment. Mike

I have used my Memorex Flash Drive on several computers and they all work.
Once you stick the flash drive in and click SLING.exe the screen will ask if you want to install the program. I say no and then the familiar screen comes up and WALA.. TV.
