I recently at a Microsoft event where they were demonstrating how an Xbox 360 can link up with a PC running Windows XP Media Center edition.
This allows you to stream programs recorded on your PC to your TV via the Xbox 360, using the xbox to control the content.
I asked if it was possible to stream/control a Slinbox, and I was told that currently it is not possible, but Sling Media could write a simple plug-in to make it work.
I don't have the version of XP to play with, and I'm not sure if what I was told was true (something tells me video will probably only run using Windows Media Player), but if it is possible, I'd like to request that Sling look into making this happen.
It'd be very nice to be able to Sling directly to my TV, rather than be limited to viewing on my computer.
Thanks,
voodoo

Actually, I beg to differ.
How do you propose to control the Slingbox from your couch? Windows XP Media Center is menu driven and designed to be run from a remote, not a mouse.
Also, I don't want to put a PC in my media room. Not only are PCs loud, but they take up a lot of room.
I have a home network and I've got an Xbox 360 attached to that network, so it would be much more conveinient to use the Xbox 360 to stream my Slingbox video (which by the way, gets upconverted to 720p - not too important with today's slingbox performance, but as bandwith increases...) This setup also doesn't force the PC to become a single use appliance.
The key here is convergence. Sling Media benefits from EVERY different use of the Slingbox. Within the next couple of years there will be tens of millions of Xbox 360's in use. Microsoft is positioning this unit to be a digital media hub. Any company that can connect to that hub will benefit.

quit being a couch potato and get up of your ass and change the channels? :p
Actually, I beg to differ.
I beg to differ with you, i would rather buy a 80$ graphics card with tv out + an IR blaster for 20$ than fork out 400$ for an xbox 360 to stream things to the TV :| its illogical and not really all that practical. The longer you keep that bad boy on, the sooner its likely to burn out (not to mention the ramifications of electricity bills).

AndyBBB,
First off, I'd like to request that this discussion remain on a professional level. Lets keep editorial comments to ourselves.
You ask how I propose to control the Slingbox from the couch. This is the whole point of Sling Media creating a plugin for Windows XP Media Center. It would allow me to view and control the Slingplayer that is running on a host PC.
Your last paragraph seems to ignore everything I have discussed so far. I don't want to have a PC (and monitor) sitting in my media room, I don't want to tie a PC to a single use, I don't want to buy a new PC for this use, and most importantly, I already own an Xbox 360.
I never suggested someone buy an xbox 360 to stream media. It is primarily a game system, with the added capability of being a digital media hub.
The system you propose would require purchasing a new PC at a cost of several hundred dollars, it would provide sub-standard video output, and not be able to control the Slingplayer (not to mention the headaches of controlling Windows XP with a remote).
I never stated that andyBBB would like a Windows XP Media Center plugin. I stated that I would like such a plugin, and that I believe many other Xbox 360/Slingbox owners would appreciate it too. for people in my situation, the cost would be zero, and the solution appreicated.

well voodoo, i apologize if it came across that way. I misunderstood what the 360 was doing, i thought you needed a pc to stream from the 360 and then the 360 to the tv.

I am rather confused in reaing the initial question in this thred. Voodoo why would you want to sling to your TV when slingbox only shows what's on your TV? I am new to slingbox and was searching to see if there was an MCE plugin for slingbox to view the streaming content (my tv shows) in the Media Center window when i ran across this. As far as I know, slingbox ONLY streams whats on your TV and not PC recorded shows. Was You request for slingbox to show recoded shows? Sorry, I was trying to understand what you were asking for.

I think an MCE plugin is an excellent idea. I use the SlingBox to watch US TV when in Europe and it is much more pleasant watching it on a TV set than on the computer screen. Like Voodoo said, Windows Media Center Edition is a very convenient to watch computer contents on the TV and SlingPlayer should be an integrated part of that.
Actually, I would like a SlingClient for the XBox 360. That way I can watch and control the DVR in another room using a SlingBox connected to the DVR and the XBox 360 connected to TV. I like the other poster don't want a Media Center PC in the living room. As most people know, it is nearly impossible to have two Motorola DVR's in the same room because they use the same IR codes.
I have a Mitsubishi LT3280 which has its own media center, which can remotely switch between your TV, DVR, Computer, and other devices that are connected to it. I have a sling box connecterd to my cabel and connected to my home network. I have a friend in another country that has checked out my connection. All works good. However, until I find some IR codes for the Mitsubishi LT3280 media center, I can only get the generic remote control on my laptop. If I could find the correct codes, I would be able to control my Mitsubishi remote control, and switch between the TV, DVR, computer etc. Where can I find the correct IR codes for my media center?
Thanks - McDee
i know the op for this is years old but,,,
this is probably the best thing to do for sling as they could charge for the program and have an activation code. the solo box is pointless as the Viewer wants intergratin of media not more gadgets by there tv.
take note sling, if the 360 could sling for £20-30 sofware you would sell 10 times more sling box's.
on the down side. the xbox1 has been hacked to do this for free using python. But the demmand for a robust system is there. also allow multi useres on the same domain. its not like you cant have a dvd player hooked up to only one tv. or even a sky box.
If I could reverse engineer the SlingBox protocol I can't help but wonder if it would be possible to write a SlingPlayer clone in XNA that would work on the Xbox 360 as a stand-alone application and allow mapping of 360 controller buttons to remote control functions.
Ok so livening up an old thread here... but has anybody made any progress on this? It would be the perfect solution for me.
I want a device connected to a FreesatHD device in a cupboard that broadcasts over my LAN. Then using either my Laptops or PC access all the broadcasts... BUT in addition my XBOX 360 is connected to my projector in the lounge and it would be fantastic if I could use the 360 to also view the content.
I can already do this using Tversity, but want to avoid having to build a PC (with capture card obviously) just for streaming this content.
the Slingbox looks like the PERFECT solution... but until I know I can use my XBOX 360 as a player - its not worth investing in.
Anyone know? Or perhaps know a good alternative?
I'm able to control my xbox 360 via my slingbox. I connected my xbox 360 to a composite coupler which then goes to my slingbox. I then use my slingbox's IR cable and point it to my xbox360's IR port and enable in my xbox all media remote. Now I can stream recorded TV on my xbox which is connected to my recorded pc. No plugin needed.Just don't expect to play your xbox game via the sling player..LOL.
