Would depend on the cost, feature set and if that included half way decent suppot.

There's been some rumors in another thread that Sling might charge for the mobile player. Thought it would be a great idea to start a new thread on this topic. Would you pay extra for a Mobile client?
Ron, can you merge or copy the content from the thread that inspired this one (WM client update thread)? I don't want to post redundant info ;)

I really don't care if I have to pay, I just want it NOW! When is it going to be available?
Yeah, I'd pay. Probably another $50 since I've already invested in a SlingBox for the only reason that I thought I'd be able to Sling to my Sprint PPC-6700 by now.
But.... If I didn't already have one, and it was $300 for a SlingBox with the PPC Player, well, then I'd probably look elsewhere. $250 is the sweet spot that should also include a mobile player.

I would not pay for another client. The price is high enough. I am also under the impression that when I bought the box all software moving forward was included.
Do not let yourselves be taken by the tyranny of small steps.
Sling would be wise to publish an API or open source the client.

I've purchased two Slingboxes, one when they first came out and one in December. I knew they only came with the Slingplayer for my PC. I would purchase a mobile player for my Treo 650 without hesitation. I would expect free updates for at least a year!
won't pay for a mobile client. If I knew/know for sure that it would not be free, I would not have purchased a slingbox. I guess I won't be able to return it... :-( 250$ is already high enough so that we don't have to pay for the client.
I'd pay for the mobile client (in it's alpha, "beta", final release state, whatever!).
Having said that, the driving force behind my Slingbox purchase was the ability to sling to my phone (being able to set DVR from the road, catch a sporting event in progress, etc). At work, I'm usually *working* (surprise) so I never considered purchasing a Slingbox (despite the ads and press coverage) until hearing about the mobile client.
Waiting for a beta client release (or invitation...) is probably more of what irritates me (yes, I feel for you Mac users too!). I thought it would be an "any day now" type of thing when I purchased my Slingbox (and maybe it is for 15 people), but now get the feeling that it could be MONTHS away from making it to the masses (as really important things like mobile client price point and software distribution channels are decided <grin>). Let's hope the fact that CNN, MSNBC, et al are now demoing it live means it will be released sooner rather than later.
An API or open source would be fantastic for supporting other devices (old and new) and community-supported player customizations, although highly unlikely (especially if there indeed will be charges for the mobile client!)
If there are charges for the mobile client, I hope they are mainly to fund a portion of the development cost of the client(s) - and not an attempt from Sling Media to get their piece of the V-Cast/SprintTV/etc pie.
Hoping we'll hear some real release news soon...
ok, I admit I sometimes connect to my Slingbox from work :)
(edit-thought the above would be in small text!)
Don't know where the "subscription" speculation came from, but the lack of ongoing user fees has been such a fundamental tenet of Sling's appeal that I can only assume that comment was completely bogus. I bet someone "official" sets the record straight on that in short order.

Right, subscription would be crazy. (but we are just in the rumors forum...) I like this one: http://www.insidebayarea.com/business... particularly this paragraph: "San Mateo-based Sling Media Inc. announced new software for its Slingbox product to let owners watch what would be available on their home television from mobile devices. The software works with any mobile device that uses Microsoft Corp.'s Mobile Platform operating system and works as a distant remote control to your home television. The software comes at a cost of $250 along with Slingbox hardware or is available free for download to those who already own a Slingbox. " Let's hope "Barbara Grady, BUSINESS WRITER" is a good reporter... (edit-another favorable rumor here: http://www.cbronline.com/article_news... )
if it cost for the sourcecode i would be happy to pay for it :p - until then, i would probably skip the mobile version, unless of course it came at a cost <= 10$
My website featuring more slingbox help is at www.butkus.co.uk
To clear up some earlier posts and comments, we did receive information from Sling that there would not be a subscription fee for the mobile client.
All the articles say it'll be available in the Spring (one says by end of Q106).

I don't understand why they just don't open up the beta program to a couple hundred people or so? Especially if we are several months away from any type of release...
At least to all the participants here at SlingCommunity. We are the vocal ones.
Do like Microsoft does and let us buy into the beta program.. heh heh heh....
