There's been some rumors in another thread that Sling might charge for the mobile player. Thought it would be a great idea to start a new thread on this topic. Would you pay extra for a Mobile client?

kalex said: qbaser i compeltely agree.  i registered mine on July 26th and it sucks what they are doing.  they don't care about current customers at all, just like every other company.  if they don't want to give it for free, at least come up with some sort of discount.  i emailed them and they said "sorry only for new customers".  oh well.    Alex

Return the one you just bought and "repurchase" another one now.  Sling is being a little silly about this but that's how the retail world works.  They have sales to entice new customers just like Walmart.  The only difference is you can take the product back to Walmart after your purchase and they will give you the sale price.  Guess that's why they are where they are.  They treat their customers right.

I cant believe that the $300 Pro HD doesnt come a free copy of the Mobile software.

so I payed $300 + $30. I guess im just retarded.

I also cant believe you cant have multiple clients. I mean REALLY?

bitrate / clients = max_br_to_use

this is simple math guys.

It may be simple math but I doubt any SB has the ability to output multiple variable streams at once.  It has nothing to do with transferring the data but more likely the encoder can't handle multiple streams.  Sure, they could probably create the hardware to do this, but you shouldn't of purchased a SB without researching it if you thought this was possible.

I didnt think it was possible. Im just grumpy about it. This can be fixed via software. a hardware fix is not needed.

it honestly seems sling is lazy when it comes to certain things..

This is funny, they debated charging for the mobile client, now that it's here the support for it is GARBAGE. All the versions are way behind the most modern of smart phones (Android, Palm Pre, WM 6.5, Symbian S60v5) -- there's 4 diff mobile os's that have NO sling player available for them. You guys suck ****.

What do you mean, might charge for the mobile player? They've been charging for SlingPlayer Mobile since the first day it came out. It's $29.99 for a per device license.

Look at the date on the original post dummy.
I was just making the point that they debated charging, then did, and now that it's here, it's garbage...so basically we pay for garbage, and garbage support...no updates whatsoever no modern mobile OS support.

US$30 for an app.. well the good things in life are free some things you just have to pay for.

Some other companies phone apps are free but if Slings are not thats the price we pay to stream to our phones.

Is it worth it? I guess so as many are paying.

I wish the iphone app was better, I think 30$ in the world of iphone apps, IS pretty high, but I don't think with their regular pricing model and projections that they could possibly lower it. Maybe later, but when all the other platforms are 30$ add-on, then well, we get hit.

AND,

if they can get at&t and apple to allow 3G streaming well then, the value proposition will rise!

Jailbreak it......  Many other companies streaming to Iphone are US$10 and to windows phones free it just depends if you are using a Sling or another placeshifting device from elsewhere.

Companies charge according to what they think the market will pay.

done and done. Just speaking to the masses at the moment.

The price is not the problem (for me)...the price is the support, which sucks.
How much you wanna bet they completely 100% outsourced their mobile development for every platform? Afterdawn.com did an article about it saying they are looking for mobile software engineers...because they never had any to begin with! That's why there's no updated clients for modern winmo or blackberry handsets, and why theres no android or symbian^1 version at all.

Well it is November 2009, and I downloaded the mobile sling application to my iPhone and it works very well. I did have to pay $30 for the player, one time purchase and it is maintained with the occassional update. I am OK with the purchase. It comes in handy when I am out of town and I want to watch a Houston Texan football or Rockets basketball game.

However, my iPhone has to be connected to a good high speed WiFi for it to work. It would be nice if it someday worked with 3G.

400kpbs or less should still stream well
