With the mobile app coming (yay!) it would be really nice if there was some way for me to save shows for viewing later (out of cell phone coverage or on a plane maybe). It would be sweet to save a program in the background to my device while at home on my WiFi network and be able to watch it later....

Anyone else think this would be a useful feature?

Yeah, it's called a dvr (for example TiVo).

Wow...really...man your smart. Thanks for the added value. How do you get your Tivo on the plane Carl? What kind of power adapters do you use?

I'm talking about storing the video on my smartphone for later use. Since I don't have a Series 2 Tivo but a DirecTV DVR w/ Tivo I'm looking for an easy way to store video on my PDA/smartphone for later viewing. Right now I've hacked my Tivo and I'm using eTivo to compress the video in 100M per hour files and transfering by hand. I just thought it'd be nice to have this option for those like Carl that probably couldn't figure that out.

the issue with recording stuff has to do with rights as far as i know... SM doesn't want to get in to a fight with the content providers..
which is also why there can only be one connection to a SB at one time..
in time i'm sure the feature you're asking for will be added..

I think you're right on will72wein... I'm sure this won't be available in the near future, but it would be useful.

Okay, smart a** reply to a smart a** comment is fair enough.

In answer to your original question, no I don't think it would be a useful feature, for me. I'm glad you've established a process by which you can do it, and that it is worthwhile for you.

Hanging a slingbox on a dvr gives me all the flexibility I need with regard to being able to do a combined time/place shift of viewing.

Thanks Carl :o) That's what I was wondering... I may be in the minority on this one.

hoop i wouldnt recommend recording to your phone anyway, you will soon use up your memory :) id say you might get 1 50minute episode on 128mb perhaps a bit more depending on compression and other factors - also bear in mind battery power of recording and then playing back at a later time.

Also if your in a no zone area where you cant get a singal you wont be able to pick up the tv to enable you to record.

I'm a new Slingbox user, and I was very disappointed to learn that the client software doesn't record. (I know the workarounds, but timeshifting is my major concern.)

I'm a US citizen living in Spain 2/3 of the year, and I bought Slingbox (mostly) to be able to keep up with my beloved Chicago White Sox here in Spain. I can handle day games, but night games are way past my bedtime with the 7-hour difference.

I know the solution is to upgrade my US service to the DVR version of the DISH receiver when I return to the US in June, but until then apparently I'm SOL. Sure would like it if the Sling folks would rethink their policy on this -- or if some clever programmer would come up with a work-around that would allow time shifting for either the WM Encoder or 3rd-party software such as grabbit.
