Hello
I'm living here in Taiwan and and on the flight back from the States for holidays learned about the Slingbox. I want to buy, but have to describe to my mom how to do it for me.

Here's the current set up:
1. Cable from the wall into a spliter: one to DVR then from DVR to TV (no cable box) and the other cable to her cable modem next to her computer.

2. USB cable from her cable modem to her computer USB port. (I had to opt for that instead of Ethernet as her computer doesn't have an ethernet port or card.) She does have a high speed Internet connection, but is it worth it (or necessary) to have an Ethernet card installed in her computer?

So ...

I need to have her install the sling box between the splitter and the DVR? and ...

Then I need to buy a router and install that between the cable modem and the computer?

Dumb question ... once the Sling software is installed on her computer, does her computer have to be on for me to have 'access'? Does the DVR need to be on as well?

Everthing for this set up can be "hard" wired: all units are very close together.

----------One other possible option:------------

She has an unused/working cable coming out of her bedroom (no TV connected to it). If I wanted to use that instead she would:

1. connect the cable to the Slingbox.
2. connect the slingbox to a cable modem.

and then?

does the cable modem have to be connected to the computer? On the diagrams at (http://www.slingmedia.com/docs/Slingb..., I don't see where there is a connection to the computer -- but I assume that there has to be one? Are you 'connected to your home network' by having cable DSL service working in your home and it going to a router? That doesn't seem correct, which would mean that I need to connect the router to her computer AND that her computer must always (?)be 'on' for me to access the slingbox? Or does it have to be initially connected to it for the software installation?

I know these are pretty basic questions and I'm missing a basic 'signal-flow' concept, but I really needed to be sure before I try to talk her through this over the phone.

Thanks for this great product and forum.

Kind Regards,

You don't need a computer hooked up to or on for you to use the Slingbox, but you do need a computer for initial setup.

There are several ways you can do it, here are a couple of options.

You buy a router and a network card. install the network card in mom's computer. Hook it to the router and hook the router to the cable modem. You would also then hook the Slingbx to the router. This would require someone to open Mom's computer and install a card....

Another option is buy a wireless router and a USB wireless connector. Plug the USB connector into Mom's computer, sling box to router(wired) and router to Modem.

In either example you would use a splitter to split the cable from the modem and the Slingbox. Unless you wanted to use the DVR, then you would hook it up that way.

Then you would install the slingplayer on Mom's computer to setup the Slingbox.

This is a couple of ways to do it. There probably are others.

I have another basic setup question. I bought my box 4 days ago and can't get it online. I live in a friend's house and have wireless access through his network. I don't have easy access to his router and definitely don't have a chance to wire directly to his router. I tried a wirelss bridge and couldn't get it going. I went to return it and was advised I could make my Slingbox run through a wireless access point. I got the WAP and want to set it up and run my box through it. Is this possible? How do I do it? I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

John, here's what I'd try...

Return the WAP and buy a 4 port switch. Connect the switch to the wireless bridge and your PC and Slingbox to the switch. If you have wireless on your PC turn it off and make sure you have a working wired connection to the router (to ensure the bridge is OK). If not, configure the bridge.

Once you know the bridge connection is OK power up the SB and wait for the green light to tell you you have a network connection. Use your PC (still connected via wire) to setup the SB.

Once the setup is complete you can go back to wireless (if applicable) on your PC. Leave the bridge, switch and SB connected in case you need to do future SB firmware upgrades.

Hi Ltj,
Thanks for the advice. What I have done is this: I got a Linksys Ethernet Bridge and it is connected and running. I thought that I would need to connect the Slingbox to it and it would work. Are you saying that I MUST have a 4 port switch, too? That's not what the Slingbox instructions say/imply. The Slingbox network light keeps flashing and there is no video image available on my computer. Please let me know what I need to do.
Thanks!

My daughter called from Tokyo and she told me about Sling Box. If I buy a Sling Box and hook it up to my computer, here in the states, can she watch American TV in Tokyo. What hardware(another Sling Box?) does she need to watch TV, if so does it show on her computer? Any info would be appreciated.

peppersalt: you need the box at your location. All she needs is software that she can download from this website.
-
You need a pc to get the slingbox set up and running, but after that you do not need a pc.
-
You also need a high speed internet connection, such as a cable modem or dsl.

Thanks Carl for the info. just acouple of other basic questions, since I am a novice at this. Does my computer or TV have to be on for her to watch on her computer?

John, here's the deal.

You don't need the switch to run the SB but you need to make a hardwired connection to it at least once to set it up.

A direct connection from your PC to the SB is not easily done because you need a DHCP server to assisgn IP addresses to both the SB and your PC. A static IP can be assigned to the SB but you need to connect to it once to set it up.

So, by installing a switch after the bridge you can connect the PC and SB together on a wired connection *and* have IP addresses assigned by the router through the bridge.

After the initial setup you can connect the SB directly to the bridge if you want or leave the switch in the circuit for future use (ie: firmware upgrades).

Will Sling Box work with Windows ME, also have DSL lite with Bellsouth is that a problem?

February 2, 2006 1:54 AM

I setup my Sb for 2 weeks already, I found out the he gateway(DSL moden) default gateway address,Subnet address and IP adress is totally different the (Belkin pre N )router. I set the NAT for Disable to the wireless router and the router trun it on and i can't do the port forwarding anymore.I figure it out , the problrm is the gateway address subnet and IP address are from (DSL moden) ,I checked w. Landspy, no open port lust saw the UDP port,,,,Please please help, how can i solution for that one....please help me out...

peppersalt: Neither your computer or tv need to be on for her to watch.

The slingbox does not need pc (except for setup). The slingplayer software is what runs on the pc (local for setup, remote for watching). It is designed for XP. I do not know if it will work with ME, maybe someone else can comment.

What is your upload speed with DSL lite? If you can upload over 250K you should be okay. The higher upload capability the better.

Hi, I posted this question in another forum but got no reply so hopefully you guys can help me here.

My SlingBox has this IP address: 192.168.1.237 . Is this a fixed one ?

I have my SlingBox wireless enabled via a Game Adapter box. I can see the Game Adapter box on the list of DHCP clients at my router but I don't see the SlingBox IP. How come ? It also makes me ask how does the SlingBox obtain its IP Address ? Is that via DHCP or is it static ?

Thank you,
Sagig

I began this thread ... from here in Taiwan. With help from my brother, I'm now Slinging off my Mom's box in the States to here in Taiwan ... It's absolutely wonderful. All those accolades for this simple looking box and relatively easy-to-set-up software are well deserved. Definately one of the key inventions of the year, especially for those of us who live overseas.

Koodos to all of you at Slingmedia -- those folks nickpicking about this product should put it all in perspective ...

Just an amplifying question, I can't seem to find a clear answer.

I plan on installing a slingbox at my parents while I am assigned to Germany in the military. The sling box coax connection has its own analog tuner for cable tv right? They subscribe to just basic analog cable and that is fine, anything is better then AFN TV. If I run the line from the wall to a splitter, one to the slingbox, one to the cable modem.. then hook it all into a router I would then be able to change channels remotely by using the tuner built into the slingbox, right?

Please let me know if I am right in this assumption or if I am way off base.

Thanks.

That is correct. The SlingBox's analog tuner can handle 100+ channels which is fine since most channels above 99 are digital now anyways. I have this same setup with splitter to cable modem/SlingBox with the router in between and it works just fine.

Hi mkztg

I sure wish they had the sling box 20 years ago when I was in the miliary stationed in Germany! (and for that matter ... Internet ... broadband ... :0 )

While I didn't do the connecting (my brother did, as I was 'remoted' from the box), I'll try to answer:

I suppose it has it's own 'analog tuner for cable TV', but to answer it another way ... yes, the sling box will 'take' whatever channels you have subscribed to (no more, no fewer), and 'pass them along' to you at your remote location, and 'yes', after you download the SlingPlayer on your remote computer, you'll see a remote controller which will, if everything is connected properly, allow you to change channels and control your VCR/DVR.

Hope this helps!

Hi Again

After posting that, I see somms post:

I wasn't differentiating between analog and digital channels, which I guess I should have ... I'm not very familiar with all of that ... so maybe it won't pass along digital channels ...

I stand corrected if this is the case.

Thanks, somms ...
