I can't wait for this. Hope it releases in Canada at the same time as in the US.
The one weakness of the Slingbox is that you need to view its stream on a computer. What the SlingMedia company should do is create a Receiver device - a SlingCatcher - that can plug into a AV system, that can locate a Slingbox on the network, and play the Slingbox stream into the TV that the SlingCatcher is attached to, without the use of a computer.
For example, I set up a Slingbox in my main AV setup in the living room. Upstairs in the den, I hook up the SlingCatcher into my computer network. Now I can use the remote that came with the SlingCatcher to control the Slingbox downstairs and watch my downstairs Tivo on my upstairs TV without involving a computer.
Or, I could be at a friend's house, hook up my SlingCatcher to their TV and to their broadband internet, and control and watch my Tivo from their house - again without using a computer.
I imagine the SlingCatcher would come with a remote, and using the SlingCatcher would be just like using the SlingBox software on a computer - except that you are using the remote that comes with the SlingCatcher, not a computer keyboard, and that you are watching the video and audio on an actual TV, not a computer. No computer would actually be involved.
If the Slingmedia company created this SlingCatcher device, I think they would sell 2 or 3 of them for every Slingbox they sold - and they would sell a TON more Slingboxes.
Please tell me what you think of this - would you consider buying a device that does what I have described, a SlingCatcher?

Hi Blake, I have a question about slingcatcher
How does the slingcatcher works? You see I already hook up my classic slingbox to my sister's appartment in U.S and I live in canada and can slingcatcher allows to watch my U.S programming in my T.V without using my computer to stream it. You see I don't want to carry my labtop to hotels or staying my uncles and aunts in India just to stream my slingcatcher. I just only like to carry just the slingcatcher and nothing else. That's what the consumer and me want it.
Andrew
This is what I need:
I have a slingbox at home because I am living for a year in the UK. The software in on my PC here in England. However, I travel A LOT but it's against company policy to add unauthorized software. So I can't watch my shows in places like China, India, Japan, Germany,....
The slingcatcher should be able to hook up to hotel TV's, which will be on PAL or what ever format. Also, Slingmedia needs to thing about how the Catcher will access the internet. Most hotels make you log in and may even place a cookie on your laptop. How will the Catcher be able to gain access?
If it can do all that then sign me up, I want one.
Have you tried running the player off a flash drive for now? Search for thumb drive or flash drive and you'll find some info.
I haven't seen anything talking about PAL/NTSC issues. The authentication/cookie thing is a good point hopefully they've already thought about.
Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.
Wow, I never even thought of using my thumb drive. I'll do a search and see if I can get it to work. I'm heading to Brussels for a few days and that would be a good test.
Dang if that works I'll be happy and mad at the same time. I spent 3 weeks in China last year and was dying for some good programming.
I tried it today and darned if it didn't work. That is great! Thanks for the tip.
Still not clear (or maybe I'm just a litte stupid
)
A simple yes or no would be helpful.
Can I watch my Slingbox set up in New York, on my big 63" plasma in L.A. using the Slingcatcher, without a computer involved?
I assume if the answer is "no", I can still do it, but indirectly, through using Slingplayer on a computer on my network in L.A, routed to the TV.

YES you dont need a laptop unless I am not understanding things correctly. the computer is only if you want to send files from your computer to the tv(like say divx files you downloaded). my plan is to get a catcher for my living room so my wife can sling her bedroom tivo and also get two catchers to send to my parents and sister's houses so that I can just leave it set up for when i visit.
will slingprojector work on a mac? (A feature, that i think may be integrated as one of Leopard's 'secret features' to the apple tv when leopard finally lands) That (from launch, of course) would probably be enough to hold me over from buying an apple tv and waiting for the slingcatcher..... have any general (or specific =)) time frame for us faithful for launch?!
