Sorry to hear about your woes. Especially, since you have been there for 18 years. Man, that sucks the big one. Well, good luck and hopefully things will work out. Take care...

I should of known better by bringing in my own wireless router to work and connecting it to there switch on there network so i could access the internet on my laptop, and of course useing my slingbox while at work sucking up the bandwith .think thats how I got caught for the last couple of weeks ,the beginning of the year there were doing some kind of audit,he notice a high bandwith usage he pin pointed where,ya he was pissed took my wireless router. told me I was in big trouble I pretty well knew that .my bad I know . I can say I'm sorry ya sorry for getting caught huh.i know . so after 18 yrs at working at this company don't know if I'll have Job after tomorrow.there going to let me hang high and dry till tomorrow .that sux. it's going to be a long night of waiting till tomorrow to know whats going to happen . Its my fault I should known better to late now just want to say just becareful where ya sling from. if I dont lose my job I probley wont be able to bring in my laptop to work anymore . I was able to listen to the audio from my laptop by useing a belkin FM transmitter to my FM sony walkman. so if they don't cann me ill be interested in the sprint smart phone with evdo when the sling mobile software comes out . Love my slingbox keep on slinging . becareful though.. take care all cool just notice an upgrade version of SlingPlayer v1.0.5.127 is out .I'll save it for tomorrow if things go ok. kind of a bitter sweet day.

Plausible deniability
'what happened sir? couldnt have possibly been me because ... !'
- Also, if your planning to use it in a work environment i would suggest talking to higher powers to ask if you are allowed. Chances are the bosses will be pissed off you even asked, but at least you've confirmed if you can / cant.
If they sack you after 18 years for a bit of bandwidth abuse, then i say contact your union and see if there is anything that can be done. If there have been no kind of warnings which prohibit usage of streaming media on company network you might have a case to appeal.

i find it kinda amazing that the slingbox in of itself sucked all the bandwidth for them to be all worked up over.. how much was the slingbox upping the stream at?
I would posit that it's the wireless router connected to and broadcasting the company's network that concern's Joe's company. The SB is just icing on the cake...
I had a meeting this morning with HR and my union steward and my supervisior. pretty intense and stressfull, ya marevas I would say that by plugging in my wireless router in there network was not a good idea. ya i would be in trouble just by doing that .but by having the slingbox box running he could see the high usage in the network by using net stumbler or or another program he use.so by running the slingbox made me stick out ya that was the iceing on the cake marevas.so in the meeting this morning I told HR i just use the internet during breaks and lunch time and stream
audio while im working .I didnt say anything about the slingbox. so in the meeting my HR said this is
SERIOUS, I'm thinking to myself this is not good Joe. we'll I was waiting for him to tell me whats going to happen to me .he says he's going to have to take it to the president of the company ,now Im thinking this really really bad doesn't look good.
and he's a new president been there less then a year and I'm just a number.
so I'll find out tomorrow about my faith with my company.
Oh by the way marevas I had my wireless router secured using wpa so I was the only one to connect wireless
I told my IT about that he didnt care

In one sense, I am not too surprised. IT people are always a very protective bunch, and I can't blame them as the security threats that exist today are real. Putting a wireless router behind a firewall is in one sense leaving a door open that can be taken advantage of. WEP encryption though OK for home, is at best a very crude form of defense for the corporate world.
As for bandwidth, the company should start to scream if people start hogging 300-600 kb/s of throughput. Most small locations still use a T1 which is 1.5 Mb/s, the cost to go above that becomes quite large (approx $500 -$1000 extra per month). If you had a company of 50 employees, a T1 would normally be sufficient, if just two employees started using Slingboxes, that could account for anywhere between 40% to 80% of the available bandwidth. Every IT person I have ever spoken to, monitor usage to see who the bandwidth hogs are. They then dig deeper to see what users are doing and if it is legit or not.
I hope you just get away with a reprimand Joe. I used to be in Senior Management with a large Telecom Vendor, and unless it was a case of blatant stealing, I always took the route of a warning first, even if they only had a couple of months service in the company.
I am sure we will see many more stories on these boards of people suddenly finding themselves in hot water at work. Though you may manage port workarounds, you simply cannot stream 300kb/s and hope to go unnoticed.
Sorry, to hear about your work troubles, Joe. I tried to setup my personal PC at work to connect to my SlingBox at home. Reading your story, I should be satisfied that I didn't get it to work.
I hope it all works out for you and that the Prez is a good guy/woman.

Joe, I work in IT in a similar position as your network administrator.
It is serious to them, however, its not THAT serious, people make mistakes.
Were you ever warned about doing this? is there an acceptable use policy etc? We have things like this crop up every so often but we dont terminate valuable staff members that cost a fortune to train and groom into productive workers. We give them the 5th degree and threaten etc, but on a first time offense its not that big a deal.
Hopefully your company values employees and realizes that people make mistakes.
Your best bet is to act completely computer illiterate and take all that gear home ASAP.
I wish you the best.
For the rest of you out there thinking about slinging at work, DO NOT DO IT, unless you know exactly where you stand on network usage and what is acceptable. Most large companies have a zero tolerance policy tied to computer/Internet acceptable use policy.
Network people can see exactly what you doing and even intercept your data stream and see what you are looking at.
Be aware, be smart.
I'm just so glad I work for a small 16 person company. And UnOfficially I am the IT. Funny thing is no one seems to complain that there connection seems slow when I have my SB going. I can have SB going and still go online with no problems at all.
We'll after 3 days of waiting on my faith of having a job or not. me and my supervisior and my union steward went into the meeting room . waiting for mark the HR person . as soon as he came in the the room he said "the good news Joe you still have a job
that's all I needed to hear. no supension but thats my final warning . no more warnings .
I said to HR I understand .he asked me if I had any questions . I said what about if I were to get a smart phone that I be able to access the internet by evdo or by sprint high speed data . right there my union steward said "joe dont push it . i said ok . Hr said just as long as your not doing any thing with the company network it should be ok.

Joe, that's good news but do you really have to watch TV while you work? You're pretty brave to ask him alternatives!
You were lucky indeed.
If you changed the wep key daily someone would have a hard time breaking the encryption, but it is an extra security measure. Also at most the attacker would only have access to the data from your computer, or be able to access the net on company cost, both of which are slim!

Interesting thread. My excitement around this has partially been around getting this technology to work in various places (including work). I'm not really into watching that much tv but the coolness factor has a draw.
Definitely going to be relying more on my EVDO connection when I really need to listen to news early in the morning at work.
im sure if u contacted your IT department, and explained u wish to stream some tv for a few minutes each day to catch up on local news, i doubt they would have any objections. Just make sure u ask before u do it.

andyBBB theres no way I would ask them that after what happened that I went threw.
hell andy I was using wpa encryption much more sercure then wep . thats not the problem the problem was I was tapped into their the company network using their bandwith .dosnt make a differeance if i was using wep or wpa . i was hardwired into there network using my wireless router . been a long day
need to listen Phil hendrie for some laughs

Joe,
I'm VERY glad to hear things worked out okay for you. Blake, our CEO, was also rooting for you, he'll be relieved to hear the update!
Best,
Jeremy
WOW!!!
You are damn lucky my man....I know people that have been fired for just jokeing about hooking up something to the corporate network for stuff.
I use Slingbox at work too, but working for a big Media company, and having 2 computers on my desk - 1 being corporate network for internal usage and 1 being - regular internet (with fiber connection) to trouble shoot through a regular connection - I don't have that restriction.
My boss was like "hmmm, thats something new to get use too." most everyone watches video clips or listen to music - but I thought it was funny that said that. I'm usually not watching it anyway with other boxes on my computer (like the internet -LOL) I just listen to CNBC throughout the day.
Glad to hear it all worked out for you man - stick to the mobile version in the future.
I've been following this with interest... I'm glad you still have a job ;)
Todd/Indy
Wow I have also been following this and I too am glad you didn't lose your job, before I retired on one of my jobs I got suspened for 3 because I was using my computer at work and I wasn't even hooked to there system. so you are very lucky and brave for asking about the mobile version, can't say I blame you I tried every job that I work like trouble shooting cell phones and working on computers and still got in trouble.Very glad it worked out for you dear.
The entire SlingCommunity Team has been watching this thread with great interest, and was relieved to find out you weren't heading for the nearest unemployment line...especially since the mobile player isn't available yet (what would you do while waiting?). Seriously, we're very happy things worked out for you.
Bringing your own router to work is crazy enough, but we still can't believe you asked HR about using EVDO to hit your Slingbox RIGHT AFTER you nearly lost your job. This tells us you're seriously addicted to your Slingbox, which is exactly why you deserve a SlingCommunity T-shirt. Congratulations! We will contact you soon to get your info. Wear it proud... you've earned it.
