While I wait for my Slingbox to arrive this week, I've been spending a lot of time in the forums. I was going to start a thread but this one will do.
The forum software is lacking a lot of basic standard features found even on free forum software. For example, as the original post mentions, there's no "New posts" option. There's also no way to see see posts in a specific subforum.
The two most obvious and frustrating features this forum lacks, is the ability for it to know what I've read (or not read) and for any thread I've already viewed, where I left off. Am I missing how to make either of these 2 features work?
I need to remember what time I last looked through the forum and then view what subforums have been updated since then. Then for each thread I want to read any followups on, I need to remember which was the last one I had already read. If it's on page 2 (or more), I need to go to the end and work back.
Any ideas?

I would like to see a new posts button (like vbulletin)
louisw; GeekNJ,
Thanks for the feedback. First, we want to acknowledge that there is certainly room for improvement in our platform. We began building this platform a little more than a year ago from scratch and have been trying to balance our priorities between matching what current, off-the-shelf software packages have in terms of features, and trying to completely reinvent the notion of a community platform.
Over the past few months in particular we have been on a steady clip adding features to our forums. Some of these, like quoting are certainly going to seem obvious and mandatory. In the next few days, for example, we will be updating SlingCommunity to include support for signatures, convenience links to private messaging & email, and more.
At the same time, we will also be rolling out new queries for viewing the threads in a given topic. At the top of each Topic, you will soon see a control that allows you to list (a) Today's Posts, (b) New (since last visit) Posts, and (c) Unanswered Posts.
But for every visible feature we add, you should know that we are also working feverishly to improve the underlying engine that is designed to dramatically improve your overall community experience. You can already see the tip of that iceberg in other areas of the community and there is still so much more to come.
We invite everyone to read about this here. Our goal is to create a better online community platform that becomes more valuable over time, not less.
As always, your comments are welcome. Look for the new build in the next few days.
Thanks for the detailed response.
I think it's just odd that with some pretty full featured solutions for community tools already available in packaged offerings that you'd look to write/build out your own.
Hopefully the features we can use to be most productive and interact here as we've come to expect elsewhere will come sooner rather then later.
I agree that this forum is very confusing and difficult to navigate - i.e., what goes where and how do I know anyone is going to see it. That said, PLEASE SEE THIS. The latest update to slingbox....I AM NOT PLEASED. The video, at least in my opinion is not better it is worse. I have reinstalled it a few times. Started from scratch a few times. Called Slingbox and they said they gotten alot of identical complaints. Still somewhere on here a couple of people said it was a great improvement. I don't agree. Also, I seem to have lost the ability to do last channel just by hitting enter. When the screen is really tiny the picture is definately improved, otherwise it is much more difficult to watch, text is blurrier, when people move across the screen, forget it, all their features disappear. Picture is also grainier like someone kicked up the sharpen feature on an old t.v. Very dissappointed. I've loved my slingbox so far. Now, I now I won't be using it nearly as often.
