just curious what people have experienced with long wired runs. sling rep said i would have problems with a 50' length. i could go as short as 20' with a well placed hole in the wall. any advice?

50' should not be a problem.

Assuming you are using twisted pair CAT-5 cabling and what are pretty standard speeds (10 or 100 Mbps), you have a maximum distance of 100 meters (328 feet) between segments.

A segment is the distance between computers or a repeating device, such as a hub or a switch.

I have multiple devices running off longer than 50' runs with no problems what so ever. I just installed my son's two X-Box's (Classic and 360) using a 50 foot cable and a 5 port switch connecteed to the wall outlet (which is easily another 50' to the router and cable modem) without any problems.

My recommendation is to just go for it and not worry. The slingbox doesn't require a large bandwidth and I'll bet you'll have no issues with a 50' run.

i've done 150 runs before, with cable I pushed and encapped myself. No real degradation that I noticed at least not at these speeds.

I think somehwere once I read 150' was a maximum without amplification.

Who is the "Rep" that said you'd have problems over 50'?? You can use wireless but he says a long ethernet run is a problem?? Sounds like the new kid that just started at Best Buy...

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

i didn't write down his name, but that's what i was thinking (which is why i posted it here - i'll take the collective advice of this group over a t.s. rep any day!) my first box arrived and wasn't connecting (turned out to be a bad box), but while diagnosing he asked about the connection and i told him i was using a 50' cable. he said that will be a problem as the slingbox works "differently" than other types of network devices and 50' is too long and the signal degradation will be too much. furthermore, he said using anything other than the included ethernet cable is dicey.

that was then. replacement box came yesterday, hooked up immediately, works beautifully (with 50' run!), remote access is a dream! running beta player with new firmware and today was my first day of slinging (blew away everyone in my office!)

thanks for all of the responses!

I use a 75' one with no problems whatsoever.

CAT5 spec says no issues with 300' runs. My slingbox is locally connected to a switch via 10' patch cable. That switch is uplinked to my switch/router combo on 100' cat5...no problems.
I've been running the slingbox this way since I was one of the first beta users.

Will we be alive when V---GER returns?
