Honest Technology has developed what it calls a software version of the SlingBox, a tool to pipe television content over the Internet remotely to users.
Honest, which has no relation to Sling Media, the creator of the SlingBox, has developed MY-IPTV Anywhere, a software package that uses either an existing PC or Media Center PC to reroute a television feed. The $99.95 software package will be available at the end of April, Honest Tech executives said.

Honest had previously developed a Media Center-like plugin that would allow users to watch and record programs on their PC. When Microsoft actually developed and released Media Center, Honest had to come up with additional enhancements to keep the company ahead of the game, according to Sonny Choi, the customer service and engineering manager for Honest.

"It's similar to the SlingBox, but it's a entirely software version," he said.

The software must be installed both on the home PC as well as the remote device, such as a laptop. Buying the software includes registration to the Honest service and IP-TV web site. Once logged into the service and site, the software tunnels through the Internet into the home PC, accessing the video feed and transcoding it into an H.264 MPEG-4 format.


MyIP-TV Anywhere requires either Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4. A Pentium 4-class PC running at 1.4 GHz is required, although Choi said Honest recommends a 2.0-GHz machine for best perfoamnce. Likewise, 128 Mbytes of RAM is required, while 256-Mbytes is the recommended configuration. The software also reserves 2 Gbytes or more on the PC's hard drive.

Users can pause, rewind, and fast-forward live TV and other recorded programs, just like a PVR, Choi said. The package also includes a USB video capture box for those customers who do not own a PC with a tuner card.

One of the software's key features, according to Choi, is its ability to discover the IP address of the home computer, even if it varies through a reassignation of the IP address via a DHCP server on a gateway or home router.

Before now and the launch, Honest plans to add an electronic programming guide to the web site, allowing the consumer to discover what shows his home PC and/or cable system is playing.
