Greetings beta testers. If one was so inclined to purchase a PocketPC or WM device, what would you suggest is the best one...assuming the criteria was ONLY performance of the slingplayer. So sorry if this was already asked, I've been buried for the past month on a significant project. Thanks!

HTC Apache aka Audiovox 6700, both Sprint and Version offer them uncripled. Sprint has the better network.

A shortcut has to be a challenge, because if it was easy, then it would just be the way.

Agree 100% if you're looking for a phone/pda. I've had the treo 700w and got rid of it for the xv6700. The extra ram, larger screen size and built in wifi make this a clear cut winner as far as phone/pda devices go.

For straight pda devices, I've always had plam devices in the past so that's not gonna help in this thread.

That's a bold statement. Sprint has a cheaper data plan but I don't know how anyone can make such a blanket statement about their network being better than verizon's. Here in the NYC metro area, verizon's network is clearly better than sprint's in terms of coverage but that will vary from region to region.

If you can afford an unlimited data plan from either carrier, go with the one that has the best coverage in your area. Your sling player will certainly benefit from either Verizon or Sprint's EVDO broadband access.

I'm here in New York also and am using Sprint, My cousin has Verizon and he always complaiing about the EVDO connection and how his Slingplayer is always choppy, I never have a choppy picture(Knock on wood). Sprint, I think is also cheaper. Not sure. But its either Sprint or Verizon no other one has a better plan.

Dont go with an integrated device. With an Axim, iPaq, or similar PDA you can connect to just about any phone with bluetooth. On average, they also get better battery life. But the best part is that you can take your device and use it with another service and are not locked into a particular carrier.

March 27, 2006 3:28 PM

Why would you carry two devices. And price wise it is not to smart, considering the cheapest phone you can get its roughly $150. How much does a ipaq go for $599?

And if the carrier is good why would you not stay with them? I've had Sprint since the first cells came out(Almost).......

One device seems simpler to me.

March 27, 2006 3:31 PM

I carry a Sprint PPC-6700 for Sling, email, web, contacts, calendar.

I carry a Verizon LG VX6100 for phone.

Cant find a better combination right now...

I also use 2 devices - Avim x51v and a Motorola V710. I always carry my cell phone with me, and it gets pretty beat up. I can't imagine opening my PDA for every phone call I make or receive.
Also, you cant beat the battery, memory, or screen size of the Axim. SlingPlayer looks phenomenal on it.

March 27, 2006 5:58 PM

also, using your phone as a modem via bluetooth is going to limit your communications between the two devices to 115kbps...much less than the slingbox or most EVDO networks can handle. At the very least make sure you connect the two devices with a USB cable...unless you're satisfied with sub par bitrate on your video stream/internet speed.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the quick response...
A slingbox addiction now forces me to consider a PDA. Jeremy, does Slingmedia have a contest to win one? :-)

I love my PPC-6700 from sprint, but I tell you this much........It makes for an awfull phone(luckly i do not get many calls). As a phone the 6700 is not very pratical, making calls and receive calls are not easily done. Checking to see who calls you its very hard, its not a phone that you can use with one hand.

I just can't see me carry two devices.......

I have to agree with you that the 6700 is a good package overall if you want just one device to carry, but it is a pretty poor phone in my opinion as well. It is just not as easy to use as any other phone with hard buttons to dial. You really need to use both bluetooth and voice activated dialing (which can be hacked to be used over bluetooth) to make it somewhat user friendly.

The Samsung i500 that I replaced with the 6700 was a much better phone, but not as good a PDA - and being palm, wouldn't support Sling - so there you go. A world of compromises...

Simplyme -

Integrated devices generally have:
1) square displays that are not always supported by windows mobile apps
2) lower resolutions
3) slower processors
4) less expansion
5) lower battery life

You get a much more powerful device if you dont go integrated. Also, right now the sprint ppc-6700 is $450 but a dell axim x51v is $370. If you get an axim and a MM-A920 from sprint then you spend $30 more but get a much more powerful combo.

Noan Z. -

Untrue. Blutooth goes up to 1Mbps though actual connections are around 700-800kbps. Thats much faster than any EVDO network.

And if I really wanted my PDA to do more, I would just use a Laptop. The 6700 its in my opinion a very very good PocketPC. Remember after all it is a PocketPC(Pocket being the word). My lifebook Laptop is small enough to almost be called a PDA(LOL).

I'm trying to get a phone for my son because he lost his and everywhere I go the cheapest phone I can find WITHOUT a new contract is $150. You can fine a phone for $30 but you would need a whole new contract. Thats the way they get you, they take care of there new customers and forget about there existing ones.

I use an HP IPAQ 5555 and it streams very well over my home wifi connection.

March 28, 2006 4:21 PM

Well I have the Sprint PPC-6700 and I love it. I had a Samsung handset prior to my 6700 and I thing the call quality is about the same I will say that 6700 does not feel as comfortable in my hand. As far as a PDA, I love it, I use it for appointments, music, and I had been watching movies on the screen for a few months now. I will say that the battery life is not perfect but, I think its a fair trade off. By the way Simpleme, try the Photo Contacts Pro app from Handigo, I love it and it really helps making and receiving calls.

P.S. I am always on the look out for additional functions for my PPC-6700 so if you guys have any suggestions I'm all ears.

March 29, 2006 6:19 PM

I first should tell you I do Network Servicing and System Consulting for a living and I am definitely a technocrat. I have customers from GA to Keywest FL
I have a Sprint 6700 (SECOND ONE) It has been a great tool and what a weight saver.
I do not need to carry a separate phone, MP3 Player, Portable Sirius Player, PDA and a Notebook Computer with all the cables extra batteries and all the other crap to connect everything together for seamless communication.

1. Need to add MS Voice so hand free is a must. The software lets you use short name (call wife mobile) or just say :dial 999 999 9999 and never have to touch a number, and when some one call it tells who is calling or the phone number. Now it is a great hands free phone.
2. You need Clearview software for native editing MS documents and print to any share/Network/Bluetooth printer and Platnotes for scribbling notes in cursive and with my terrible handwriting it is amazing it can read my scribble better than I can.
3. You need Resco setup network connection and connect to any and all wireless system to edit maintain or service systems. It is such a breeze the doing it the old fashion way with the program Netuse.
4. The Spb to organize all the programs on the system. PCAnywhere (to connect to clients server(s) etc)
5. Now you need to use Sirius PPC for the music or run GSplayer for free internet music load a bunch of mp3 music on the storage cards
6. Keep all my contacts and calendar and appointments

I do have the 3 extended batteries because of my heavy use I was out of battery life in about 2 hours with the stock battery.

Now with Sling mobile I can watch the local news no matter if I am in Miami or Orlando (feel like I am home) and I can watch Fox News. It is also nice to have dinner in the mall and sit there and watch the recording of 24. Using the stock ear set is great. But the Beta does have a problem with the sound using the stock the headset you must pull it out a from the female side and play with it (a little touchy) so you can here in stereo. I do lose the microphone ability. Hopefully they can correct this with the production system. IF YOU GUYS READ THIS LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THERE IS A HICKUP WITH SOUND.

Now tell me where I can get all that in a small package and the download speed 2.7 MPS (EVO) in a cheep package on the side of my hip. Sprint is very fair on the price of (EVO) it is a great value. I now do not have to search for any hot spots and truely have a MOBILE DEVICE All this you here me " all this".
So if you really use a device there is not a better system out there. But like any computer the software makes the difference.and now I am saving my shoulder from carring all the other stuff.

Hey Rowlette.... Thank God it wasnt only me that noticed that problem with the sound, If you change the sound to mono in the sling options you can hear it out of both ears, but unfortunately not in stereo, but hey it's better than having the connector pulled out a bit!! SLING PLEASE FIX THIS!!! Do you think this is just a prob with the the Sprint ppc 6700? anyone else notice this with any other device?

March 30, 2006 6:13 PM

For the record, Im not trashing PDA/phones. They are good for a certain portion of the population. But I put them in the same category as printer/scanners, phone/answering machines, TV/vcrs or TV/DVDs. Usually you end up getting two subpar devices in exchange for only having to buy one device. Even oweners of such devices complain about how crummy they are in one aspect or another. Consequently, unless you absolutely must only cary one device, I recommend getting two. You get much more for your money and get much more performance if you get two devices. Its also not like you are holding two devices either. A phone and PDA can both clip to your belt or fit in a purse. If you need to use your PDA, grab it. If you need to use your phone, grab it. If you want to use your PDA over a wireless network, well it will establish the wireless connection without having to grab the phone. In my opinion, having two devices is not inconvenient since you only need to touch one device at a time. You also dont need to maintain two phonebooks since the one in your PDA can dial the one in your phone. IMHO, two devices give you more options, more flexability, and you are not as screwed if one portion of your device breaks. Sure integrated devices are a bit more convenient but what you have to give up to gain that convenience is not worth it.

What I was tring to point out was that integrates devices are not the same. Sure they look like most PDAs but most have nowhere near the performance. People who never had a PDA will likely be totally impressed by an integrated device, but people who have had palms and other windows mobile devices will likely be disappointed at the performance of an integrated device.

To let you know I have been using phone when they cost me over $3000.00 for the car and .40 per minute and the first mobile unit in a carry around suit case. Portable computer when it was about 20-30 lbs and the first LCD portables. Also been on the PDA route for over 6years so I am talking from experience. I use the 6700 as a phone when on it is on my hip just power off the screen and you are ready to recieve a call and it turns itself on automatically. It is well worth it if you do this for a living. I now can support my customer at a moments notice even when I am on the can. lol But really before I had to go to my car get my notebook find a wifi place that had good uploads. Sometimes I was not able to get to my customers server for a couple of hours now it is minutes
