I've travelled 6,000 miles to Ireland from California (for the 2nd time) to setup a Slingbox. When I return to the U.S. on Wednesday, I will have travelled a total of 24,000 miles - FOR NOTHING. You could say that I have, literally, gone to the Ends of the Earth to get this wretched rotten thing working.

I am now sitting here in my parents house, looking at a BROKEN Slingbox (I think). It will not get an address from my router. In fact, it will not get an address from any (of three) different routers I've tried. It sits there. The network light blinks. Then the network light goes off. I even went out and wasted another 100 Euro on another router today, just to be sure. I can't take it back. I'm out of time. Totally out of time. It's Monday night - Tuesday really - it's 2AM. I have one more day here. Yes, I've tried the "Reset" button - about 40 thousand million times. And I've tried resetting the routers (yes, routerS - plural).

I've spent the whole last week here setting up a new computer for my parents, a new network, wiring the place, getting all the TV cables and jacks organized. I even got the high-speed internet installed in Dublin - just TRY doing that yourself - the broadband "service" in this country is a joke. It took me months to get a reliable service with a decent upload speed.

And there's my useless P.O.S. Slingbox, sitting there with the network light just OFF.

I personally think the NICs in the Slingbox are of poor quality. Looking at the forums, this does not seem to be an isolated incident. This should be ROCK SOLID. People are thousands of miles away sometimes.

What a waste of time and money. I'm so depressed I can't bear it anymore.

Guess I should "bring it back" for a replacement? No problems - I'll be back in California on Wednesday!!! What's a few more grand anyway, and more days or weeks of travelling, getting time off work, and wasting time...

I'm sure there are bad slingboxes out there.. Have you ever heard of a product, expecially an electronic product, that every one was perfect??? It's understandable that you are frustrated but come on...

Have you talked to Sling's support or are you just ranting on a 3rd party forum??

You're also not giving anyone any information to try and help you.. Is the slingbox hard-wired to the router or wireless? If hard-wired have you replaced cables?? Did you wire the place? What kind of cat 5 testing equipment did you use to test the cabling??

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

No I am not ranting from a 3rd party forum. I'm just genuinely upset. You would be too.

I'm a network admin, with my own biz and have been at this 20+ years. I've a sack full of cables, and testing equipment. It all works fine.

Anyway, here's the update...

I finally got it back on the network by UNPLUGGING it overnight. I was able to get it up and runnig again, set it to .237 and it held the network connection all day. It's still holding it.

However, stupidly...thinking it would be prudent and a generally good idea, I updated the SlingPlayer software and did the latest firmware upgrade (SlingPlayer_1.0.5.140_upgrade). Now my self-made codes for my Akai VCR (Akai VS-F260) in Ireland no longer work. I can now no longer control my VCR/Slingbox remotely.

It's 11:35PM here now, and I leave for California in the morning. I wish I'd just left it alone once I'd got it to work.

Now I'm not even angry. I'm just sad, and if anything, annoyed with myself. I should have learned from twenty years in this business, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
