If your network adminstrators at work have blocked certain ports, and you can no longer connect to services on your network, there may be a workaround for you. Read my article here. Near the end, I discuss port redirection. In the case of the Slingbox, you could set the outside port to be something such as 50000 and the inside port to the default of 5001.

Note that if your ISP blocks certain ports, such as 80, you can use port redirection to get around that limitation, too. The most convenient thing I have found is that there is no need to change the default settings within the services themselves (web server, FTP server, etc.)

I read the article but still did not get it. I do not have Tivo, only slingbox with regular cable. Could you help me setting the default port 5001 and forwarding it to 50000? I have this Linksys router:

 http://www.portforward.com/english/ro...

but I do not see the Port Redirection Table that you mentioned in your article.

In my case with the WRT54G/GS, I loaded a third-party firmware onto my routers, thus giving me the capability of port redirection. Port redirection is not available with the stock Linksys firmware. The information in the article was only an example.

I don't have a WRT54G with the standard firmware handy, but, I am quite sure it too allows port redirection.

tt33 ... from looking at the "portforwarding.com" page you linked to it would seem your router does not allow redirection.

Alas, all is not lost. What you can do, is to forward whatever port you want/need to your sling's IP, and then tell your sling to listen to that port. It, basically, accomplishes the same thing. One difference being that you will have to specify said port for LAN streaming as well - I mean instead of the default 5001.

Yog dude,

I just had a look at the info at your link. It's interesting, and useful, but, it occurs to me that since you already have hyperwrt installed on the router, you are making things way to complicated.

Why not just enable the ssh daemon on the router and use ssh to do your port forwarding. That way you open less ports to the "big bad internet" and you always point your TIVO/sling/etc client to the same "localhost" address. SSH will to it magic based on how you connect.  For example:

ssh your.router.IP  -C -L 5001:192.168.0.237:5001

Then start your sling and point it to "localhost".

The same would work with TIVO or what-have-you, changing the ports and the IPs as necessary. Not as much of a hassle as one would first imagine, as one can use aliases.  The advantage of this is that you can pretty much do it from everywhere, as most places let the SHH port open for secure access to remote sites.

I have SSH enabled, but haven't done much or had much need for using bash at the router (usually pings and traceroutes). I may tinker with this in the future.
