For both UK and US users, we have released the latest version of 1.3 SlingPlayer PC.  There are many under the hood fixes with this version but the main fix is the bitrate speed problems our earlier 1.3 beta experienced.

LAN streaming should top out around 2Mbps and your picture quality should be oh so delicious.

We're hoping the SlingCommunity can really help shut the door on 1.3 so that we can promote this beta version to a general release.

Here are the links to the downloads:

For US Slingbox owners: http://www.slingmedia.com/us/support/bdownload.php

For UK Slingbox Owners:

Please post any and all comments here--is this version ready for prime time?

Thanks!

Thank you for the update.  I've now updated my UK S/B firmware and my US located Slingplayer software.

The audio only mode appears to stream at around 187 to 188 kbps (on a remote connection).  This is a great improvement over the previous limit of around 90 kbps.  Too early to say anything about the audio qulaity.

This is what you say:

Want to listen to your home satellite radio service with the best possible quality? Try the new Audio-Only Mode’s compact interface for a great experience!

So, my question is, what is your upper limit for audio only bit rate on a remote connection, assuming that internet connection bandwidth is unlimited?  I think that you can only get to "best quality" for audio at bit rates North of 320 kbps.

Picture is improved; it's sharper. The streaming rate seems to be about the same as the previous beta (650-1400 Kbps). I am on a Wireless G connection with "good" signal strength.

Sure wish    C L O S E D  C A P T I O N I N G     was part of this release!

I have to agree that the PQ  seems crisper, but my observed streaming rate is very similar to the earlier 1.3 beta - bounces around between 600 - 1500, with occasional jumps to 2000.

PLEASE update the SA 8300 remote to PUT BACK the keyboard shortcuts for LIST, A, B, & C buttons - you used to have these and lost them some how.

Picture is improved.  Last beta seemed to be a very digitalized image, this one is much smoother.  Last beta, I couldn't reach over 1300-1400Kbs at best.  At this moment, I  am at 2124Kbs with High action selected.  Further details to follow.

To sling or not... Nah, we'll sling

Sorry Brian. My wireless and wired network (LAN) is way above average. Using V1.2.0.157 I was topping out with 2.1MB/sec. Since using V1.3.0.168 and now V1.3.0.175 max speed is 1550 MB/sec. I am using FW version 1.0.80 and refuse to upgrade to 1.0.86 or 1.0.89. I use Applian At-Large Recorder. SlingMedia's lack of third party support for this stream recorder and the "so-called" implementation plan to encode or encrypt the stream is a weak substitute  for confronting the DVR, cable and  broadcast industry lawyers.

Bottom Line: get back into that code and fix the feature bug.

Bob

I would like to reiterate the need to put the keyboard shortcuts back.  I have SA8300HD also, and I need the keyboard shortcuts so I can map them to a physical remote control.

I would imagine that we all would like keyboard shortcuts on all remotes for all keys.

This is weird, in the previous beta I was getting 2100+ kbps on my internal lan right after connecting. With this beta I started at 900 kbps and then after 5 minutes it's gone up to 2100 kbps. I dont know why it didnt start right away at the max bandwidth.

Any news on support for more devices like KiSS players? I dont think you can ever support all devices out there, so might be easier to allow users to create their own IR profiles.

First impressions, the remote firmware upgrade finally popped up to allow me to attempt that but I decliened. I love the new smoked glass skin. Currently connecting at a 1200 to 1500Kbps from work to a home FiOS 30/5 connection.

Everything looks good so far, one thing I liked very much was that it imported my channel settings. Last one wiped them on all systems.

A shortcut has to be a challenge, because if it was easy, then it would just be the way.

AWESOME! NEW FIRMWARE GOES UP TO 3 MEGABIT STREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

August 4, 2006 12:01 PM

Installed the new update and FW.  The overall streaming speed doesn't seem to be much better (or even slightly worse) than before (about 1.5-1.7Mbps on my Gigabit network) but the main problem is that it takes quite a while to get up to that speed (2-3min at least) - can't something be done to improve this? (it's especially noticeable when changing channel).

Also - any word on a Humax 9200T remote as discussed a couple of times before?

And - the post installation webpage opened is still the US one for the UK software!!

Latest firmware and client said "FAILED" when install completed, however it did appear to install correctly (slingbox works and has the xx.89 firmware.

Also seems to address the slower streaming I was seeing with the prev firmware version!  Thanks Jeremy for listening to our concerns and fixing (or finding folks to fix) whatever needed fixing for this latest version!

So far so good - back to 2000kbps!

You must have a secret version of the firmware...

For me is working fine with the cable box input, but with antenna option the image is freezing! (the streaming speed is very slow, in the LAN)

any ideia how to fix it?

thanks

The beta is asking me to update the Slingbox's firmware. I'm still playing with the beta and I don't want to change the firmware if it means I can't go back to the old software release if I have a problem with the beta release. Anyone know if the two are compatible?

August 4, 2006 9:20 PM

I updated both the player and the firwmare, and now several of the channels that were previously available under the earlier player and firmware are no longer accessible. The configuration info only shows channels from 1-69 being available, while my cable provider actually offers channels from 1-99.

This really blows, as channel 96 is the station that broadcasts the baseball games for which I purchased the Slingbox in the first place.

Ugh...

Are you using the internal tuner? Did you try to rescan the channels?

For whatever it's worth, after every update I rescan my channels as I did this time and I'm currently seeing the full range of channels including those above 70.

Well, then you mut have the 'super secret' version...I've both the current beta software and firmware and have not seen greater than 2mbs, and that only occasionally - on a 100mbs LAN that is very clean and with a newish 1.8Ghz Pentium M Dell D610 with 1Gig Ram.

Would like to hear from others if they are seeing significantly higher bit rates than before....

August 5, 2006 12:53 AM

Dave, you were right. All I needed to do was rescan the channels.

Thanks for the tip!

Both my desktop and Slingbox are wireless and I'm using the internal tuner. On first launch of the player my speeds start slow under 1000 but over a period of several minutes gets higher and evenutally exceeds 1500. It's peaked a couple of times in the high 1700s to low 1800s for me.
