I just stopped at the Best Buy in Augusta, GA and they have the AV on the shelf..  $179.99.  They also show the Pro and the Tuner will be in stock 10/22/06.  Pro-$249.99, HD connector-$49.99, and Tuner-$149.99.   Pictures coming soon...

Slinging Tivo HD, Tivo S2, and OTA from a Pro HD, Tivo HD from a Pro, Tivo HD from a Solo, and Humax DRT800 from a Classic to iPhone, Dell Inspiron 1520 with Sprint EVDO, and a SlingCatcher over Mi-Connection cable with 2Mbps upload.

I am really confused by this...I feel like I missed a meeting.

Why would anybody buy the Slingbox AV for $179 ? It looks like it does LESS  (no built-in tuner) than the 'original' Slingbox that you can currently buy for $139.  Does anybody see any advantage ?

Also, why would Sling be selling this new product in BEST Buy without any  mention of it whatsoever on its website ?   I know they appear to be understaffed, but come on !   At a minimum they should have a comparison of the models before they start selling them.

I would bet it was a screw up by Best Buy..  Someone also mentioned that Sling has a confidentiality thing with the FCC until the 28th I think..  Maybe this also keeps Sling from disclosing information??

I would also guess that the original model is being phased out..

Best Buy is notorious for selling products before they're supposed to be released.  I was reading on AVSForums where I guy was sold a pre-release, demo only, version of either the HD-DVD or BlueRay (can't remember which).  On top of that, it was sold as an open box, because it was the "last one they had in stock".  They hadn't even been shipped their stock yet.

Ryand, did you see if the Pro model had HDMI input?

September 26, 2006 4:17 PM

I believe it will only be a Component Input that is what it says on the box.

They didn't have the Pro yet. The only info was the comparison on the box..

Slingbox AV for sale at Bestbuy

There is something in another post about this comment found on amazon.com regarding the Slingox AV and Tuner :

"SlingStream technology delivers up to a 400 percent video quality improvement over the original Slingbox"

What do you make of it ? Slingstream has been there from day one. IS there any kind of improvment other the original SB ?

September 27, 2006 10:52 AM

This is very interesting because You can pick up an orginal for $139 vs this AV for $179 with less inputs. I posted some info on rear of teh unit comparisons: http://techgadgets.blogspot.com/2006/...

Looks like the PR is out...

Now we know...

It's still good old WMV9. The mention to 400% better quality refered to resolution. Max. resolution has been bumped up to 640x480 as well as bitrates accordingly.

No improvment for remote viewing then.

September 28, 2006 8:16 AM

Unless you VPN in :) Somebody test that and let us know how the performance is...(with a high speed connection preferably 8Mbps or faster)

September 28, 2006 1:38 PM

Interesting.

Has anyone tried the VPN approach ? I guess the goal is to trick the Slingbox into believing it is still on a Lan.

However, when overriding the automatic settings, you have a choice of several resolutions, including 640x240 (on the original SB). I forced this on several occasions but had skips i then attributed to insufficient upload speed.

Can't you just tell the box you want remote viewing at 640x480 (on the new Slingbox "trinity" of course), if you have the proper bandwith ?

Is a VPN approach really mandatory since the box let you choose your resolution anyway ?

September 28, 2006 2:24 PM

well, i don't have one of the new units so didn't know to what extent it permitted you to select. If it just allows you to do that then VPN would be an unnecessary step obviously.

September 28, 2006 3:02 PM

Yes the new units do allow you to manually set up 8mbit and 640x480.

September 30, 2006 3:05 AM

I think that its the software, just tried it on my old box remotely. When I turn down the frame rate I do see an improvement when switched to 640x480. Maybe its just 640x240, but I see a difference from 320x240.

I am using the software for the new boxes (entirely unsupported and not recommended of course) Wink
