I live overseas and have a few sling boxes (originals) set up in the states. Is it possible to replace the old units with AV or pro units without having to access them with a computer in the states. I have someone taking care of them for me but they dont have windows and don't know how to handle the software. I set them all up before I moved overseas. Looks like the new units provide better pictures but I am wonering how I can set them up without being there. My friend could handle switching wires and stuff, and all the internet port settings should be ok if we just switch wires but I'm not sure how I could actually get the finder ID or new box setup without actually being there.

 any thoughts?

Hi NativeTheory,

You should check out my Slingbox Family Performance Review. If you read through it, you'll discover that the remote streaming capabilities of the new Slingboxes are not much different than what the original Slingbox offers... at least until the 320 x 240 cap is lifted.  Much of the improved performance is centered around LAN viewing. Though HDTV looks better remotely if you have the PRO box and the upcoming HD adapter.

I really don't know what this "cap" is. I'm streaming at 640x480 with my "classic" slingbox now. The latest firmware lets you have higher performance LAN streaming.

What I want to know is does the A/V model do a better job than the classic model at the same resolutions?

The cap refers to the current resolution limit outside the home, which is 320x240. On your classic Slingbox, the max output resolution is 640x240 (which I know seems funny), where as the new ones are 640x480. Also the max bitrate is much higher than what the original Slingbox can do. On the LAN at home, the quality improvement is noticeable. As far as comparing identical resolutions (say 320x240, WAN), I don't trust my powers of observation enough to ascertain if there are differences - you may want to check Matt's reviews/observations for his perspective.

Thanks for the clarification. I just found the article about the performance difference between the new and old. This is JUST the information I need in determining if I want to buy an A/V as an upgrade. thanks!
