The TV2 output of the Dish Network vip622 receiver is usually controlled by a UHF remote. Is there a way to control this with the slingbox? Our TV2 output is not usually used at all, and seems like the perfect feed for a slingbox having access to all of our recordings and channels without affecting the home use of TV1.

Slingbox doesn't support UHF remotes.

RTFM!

Does anyone from Sling tech support read these forums?  I too want my sling attached to TV2, but have only been able to get the Sling remote to control TV1.  I wonder why Sling can’t do what Microsoft has done.  My windows xp Media Center controls my Vip622 TV2 using the IR controls it learned from my “6.3 IR/UHF Pro” Dish TV2 remote.  I can not get anyone at Sling Technical support to understand, yes the Dish TV2 remote is a RF remote, but it is also duel mode, working as an IR remote!

You're saying you're controlling TV2 with IR?  I haven't heard of anyone accomplishing that..  There are alot of threads here about the 622 and other dual tuner models with RF..  Are you sure your media center remote isn't IR/RF too??

i have a Hp digital entertainment center z557 running windows Xp, which at one time i thought i had setup to control the vip622.  However your correct, i rechecked the remote, and it has no IR output when the Sat is selected. so i don't know how it ever worked.  Dishnetwork tech support said something about requiring internal reconfiguring when i previously ask about using the Rf remote on TV1 since it was behind doors.  Has anyone successfully swapped the remote receivers so the IR remote is on tv2?

I have a VIP622, and more PCs in my house then TV's.

I do not own a SlingBox, but I love the technology.

I have confirmed that the #2 remote sends out both IR and UHF, using my Harmony remote. (I can program buttons from the #2 remote to the Harmony)

I cannot determine if they are unique TV2 codes or not.

It seems that Sling Media needs to simply get a hold of both a 1 and 2 remote and try it out.

This feature is the only thing keeping me from driving the half-mile from my work to Fry's and buying a Slingbox right now.

I do have VIP622 and IR does not turn off the TV2 channel which is not HDTV, but regular cable channel - this feature is important when I travel so that I can control this while the other person at home can watch on channel 1 and leave me in channel 2.

While the 622 TV2 Remote DOES send IR and UHF, the 622 receiver only receives the UHF signal from the TV2 remote.

I have talked with Mark Jackson who is the president of Echostar Technologies and he tells me they are working on making the 622 TV2 IR compatable, this helps not only with the slingbox but also custom installs where a customer puts all their receivers in one place (ie basement) and controls the receivers via IR extenders.

I will actually be flying out again next week and will see Mark Jackson and will again ask him the status of this.

Thanks for the response Scott.

I understand the need to IR control on a remote box, as I work at a distributed audio company.

I am buying a first-gen slingbox off of Woot right now, does it still have the ability to upgrade the IR codes?

Scott, were you able to get any information from Mark on the status of this?

Dish network ViP622 DVR  HDTV, how to get the remote control to work.                   From the primary remote 1 (Has 1 in green on the bottom). 1.      Press menu bottom twice.

  1. You will see System Information and
  2. Toward the bottom, it shows the Primary (and secondary) Remote Address’s.
  3. There is a white box that has the receiver code.  My original code said 15.
  4. This receiver code for the Primary remote 1, needs to say 1 in the white box.

To change the code, follow these steps:

  1.  *Hold down the Sat key (upper left of the dish remote) until all the buttons at the top light up.
  2.   Let go of the key.
  3. *Press 1, then pound (# ) key, then record bottom.
  4. *Press the Sat key again.
  5. The white box next to Primary Remote Address should now read 1.
  6. Exit the menu and try your  Slingbox control again.  It worked immediately right away.

What does that do exactly Surfer?

My slingbox can control the box just find using TV1 output, the trick we want is TV2 IR control, so that say we can watch TV2 using a PC, and still have TV1 playing in the living room.

Has anybody tried the new 722 Dish DVR receiver to see if TV2 can be controlled with IR instead of UHF?

August 18, 2007 4:38 PM

The info I've seen looks like it's still the same setup.  It does have a UHF remote.  Haven't seen anything definite though.

The reality is, for what Dish created the TV2 output for, it doesn't make sense for it to be IR..

Does anyone know what frequency the VIP622 uses?  I am really interested to see if i can find or make a IR to UHF remote extender that i can trick into working with my DVR.

Does this prevent the reception of uhf commands to the dish 622 from the 2nd remote. It would be great if the slingbox could be connected to the 622 via cables to the channel 2 outputs, but still allow the 2nd channel to be accessible via uhf.

Is there any resolution on this?

I am also looking for an update for this.  Making use of TV2 on my VIP622 would be a dream setup.

February 15, 2008 8:57 PM

I have the dish 722, I haven't had any sucess using TV2 yet with my slingbox.  I am sure that the TV2 remote has infared capabilities as well.    I know this, because when I first got my 722, i covered the remote IR blasters and could not turn on the system.  My UHF controls must have been disabled at the time.  There must be some IR codes that TV2 would recognize.  However, the remote two is not in any of the sling codes, atleast at the most current update.  I've tried all the manual codes.  The back of the remote says IR 6.3/ UHF Pro.  Has anyone had any success yet?  I've sent a email to sling media, no response yet.

I called Dish network and got sent to an advance tech.  She was unaware of what a Slingbox was, but she did tell me that the VIP622 did not support two IR channels to control the box, and that only one IR control was available.

Can anyone with advance knowledge of the VIP622 verify that it only has support for a single IR controller in the Set-Top-Box?

If what tech said is true, then that can end our hopes for trying to find a method.  But, if there is no physical IR limitation, we could push tech support until one of their engineers reveals to tech support a method.  Or we could make Dish aware and hope for a software update to VIP622.

I spoke to multiple people at CES in Las Vegas in January about this problem. The response I got from Sling Media was that they "had no clue this was a problem"... ya right. Like I'm the only one in the world trying to connect a slingbox to tuner 2. I also spoke to many people at Dish Network's booth and I spoke to the "Head Engineer" for Echostar's equipment development and his reponse was: "I have a Dish 722 receiver and a slingbox at home. I wish I could use it on tuner 2, that would be great! I don't know of any way that we could accomplish that." I asked them how Echosphere could own both Sling Media and Dish Network and not have the products completely compatible. His reponse was "I dont know, were aware of the problem, and we're working on it."

We'll see. This would make my Slinging MUCH more enjoyable!
