I'm currently using a Belkin F5D7633UK4A router and have a small problem.  I live in London U.K. and my slingbox is in Vancouver. When i'm in London I use an ethernet cable to connect directly from the router to my laptop and get average speeds of around 1200kbps. However, when I wander round the house wirelessly I only get around 400kbps.

Do I need to configure the ports on my London router? I know I need to add port 5001 but i'm confused as to which ip I add. The router ip? The sling ip? My ip?

Thanks,

Nick.

Anyone?

No configuration is required at the remote site unless there is a firewall setting that completely blocks the stream.  Wireless lans frequently have weak or dead spots due to walls, interference, etc.  Here are a few things to try:

  • Move the access point.  Sometimes just a few feet can make a difference if it is close to another electronic device.
  • Change channels.  There are several channels available for wireless lan transmission.  You may have a neighbor with a wireless lan on the same channel as yours.
  • Turn off the lights.  Sounds funny, but some light fixtures can generate significant interference in wireless lans.  If things improve with all of the lights off, try to isolate the problem to a particular fixture.
  • Temporarily disconnect any cordless phones to see if they are causing interference.

Hope this helps.

The older I get, the better I was.
