Uh, the pro costs LESS than what I paid for my oringal SB -- and the pro has more capability and better video.
I think I can make a better case for feeling ripped-off...
my slingbox classic allows me to have a choice of what i stream remotely... i have basic cable plugged into the coax input, and directv through the composite inputs. when viewing remotely i just change the source and i can watch cable or satellite. seeing as how the A/V doesn't have a coax input and the Basic doesn't have s-video or composite, this isn't possible on either of these units...
also, i don't have to dedicate an output on my STB to my slingbox classic because it offers pass-through audio and video. so if i only have one composite output on my directv stb (which i don't, i have multiple) i have to choose between s-video or composite and then purchase a set of splitters to split the audio outputs to feed the TV as well as the slingbox.
to get this functionality with the new product line you are forced to buy the PRO model... which conveniently enough costs ~$100+ more than the slingbox classic, a/v or basic. i for one am glad i got my slingbox when i did. after seing mine, a friend decided he wanted one and thought that ordering the latest and greatest was the way to go... only to get it home and relize that he couldn't hook it up to his TiVo b/c it didn't allow him to pass-through the audio/video to his stereo and tv. he ended up taking it back to a best buy that still had some of the old slingboxes.

sure.. as an early adopter you probably did pay more. but right now the slingbox a/v costs as much or more than the classic, yet provides substantially less features.
A Slingbox AV or Tuner costs about $179.
A Slingbox Pro can be had for about $230.
$230 - $179 = $51.
That's about half the $100 extra that the original troll, er, poster claimed.

NA9D,
i know you are a valuable member of this community but your smart @ss remarks are neither warranted or appreciated. Slingbox AV can definitely be found for less than $179, i've seen it in multiple places for $150. As for the pro, prices vary from between $230 to $250 (hence the $100 reference). just because someone posts something that you don't agree with, doesn't make them a troll. <rolls eyes>
OK, byron sorry to offend. Gee, lighten up. I should have put a smiley after the troll comment. :)
I don't think they are a rip-off. Six months from now a Pro will be had for under $200 and AV and tuners for well under $150.

Yea, I agree with NA9D, the Slingbox classic was pretty stale, therefor you could get it for a very low price. Like he said, give it a few months and I'll bet you see Amazon and others lower the price.
Slingbox+Mac=Heaven anywhere!
sorry if i was quick to defend.
it just seems that by eliminating these features, they've really narrowed the product line..... with that being said, i think the slingbox pro is a great product, i just don't like how they've stripped down the tuner and AV models.

Absolutely -- for a current purchase, the original can be bought for less than the pro -- but it still has only one audio input and lower video quality. If I were buying today, I might still think the pro is worth the difference over the current [close-out ?] pricing on the original, depending on the application. But I sure wouldn't buy it if I didn't need it.
SlingMedia probably came out with the 3 boxes for various reasons of what people need:
Tuner: If you have basic cable and no other AV equipment, why pay for inputs you don't need? So the tuner is the most basic of units.
AV: If you have something like Satellite TV with no other antenna, why do you need a tuner? Skip the cost of the tuner and just use the AV outs from your set top box.
Pro: If you are the psycho (like me) who wants everything, having multiple inputs is simply crucial.
I think it was a great strategy. Pay only for what you need.

I just got the "Classic" and love, but I am wondering the difference between the classic and AV (since both have s-video)?? What am I missing?
thanks!
I am up for my 3rd slingbox. I DO want both composite ins and coax ins. So, do I go Classic or Pro in terms of input flexibility?
Someone mentioned here Pro has better quality video? Is this compared to Classic? in your answer, pls keep in mind I do NOT have HD. I am just getting DirecTV soon.
Classic can be found for $150 in several places, Pro is about $250. So if difference is only looks and HD support (in Pro), then I may has well go for the Classic.
Well, I've got two classics, and they each cost me more than the Pro costs today. I don't think the current model lineups and pricing are a ripoff, I think Sling is responding to the market by offering options at varying prices.
For winger - I've also got a Pro on top of my two classics. That was my choice for the third unit. No regrets at all.

Look at the specs of the boxes. The new boxes will do a full 640 x 480 resolution on the LAN and stream at up to about 8 Mb/s. The Classic will do something like 320 x 240 or up to 640 x 240 or something funky like that. The difference is very noticeable.
Additionally, the new boxes all have standard A/V connections while the classic had to use camcorder type adapter cables. And the Tuner and Pro models also pass through the RF signal on the coax.
If most of your Slinging is remote then there really is no difference supposedly in quality. I do think my Pro looks better on the WAN than the Classic, but that's my subjective opinion. If you do most of your Slinging over the WAN and not the LAN, then the Classic is probably a better buy. Keep in mind the Pro has an additional set of inputs - you can have both a composite AND an S-video input on the Pro and each have independent audio connections. Not so with the Classic. You have to have some sort of external switch that would control switching audio when switching video inputs.

Excuse the funky characters in my post. Not sure where they are coming from and I tried to take them out twice...

I corrected the odd characters in your post, but I'm concerned that it happened in two separate comments. Let me know if this happens again.

You guys don't know the meaning of poor value - try $348 (£179.99) for a Slingbox Classic! - that's the price we have to pay in the UK (and it's only available from about two suppliers!).
Oh and you can only get the Classic (no Pro version available) and also Slingplayer Mobile is only available if you take out a contract with the '3' mobile network.
Cheers
Alan
Just got the classic at the Source by Circuit City (Canada) for $199 Cdn. It had been $299. This seems to be the only model available in Canada.

Yep same in Taiwan. Check out the redicoous prices. So thats why I buy from the USA and import them here. Cheaper than even the distributor here would give me.
No Pros in Taiwan either so get those from the USA as well.
If Evolution Works, Why So Many Idiots?
The 3 models are now available in Canada through FutureShop (web only), the prices are pretty reasonable, including 299 Cdn for the Pro, so I ordered one yesterday!
