I have a slingbox AV that I'm trying to put online using a linksys game wireless adapter in conjunction with my Airport Express.

I choose manual router configuration, and type in 10.0.1.42 for the IP address, I leave the Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, and I don't change the Default Gateway.  I continue on and use port 5001 for port forwarding.

Then, I go into Airport Admin Utility, go to the port mapping tab, add a new port, typing in 5001 for private and public ports, and 10.0.1.42 as the private IP address, because it's what I used as the slingbox IP address.

I then go back to the slingbox setup to finish the internet configuration and it says it doesn't work.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Not exactly sure what's wrong but I had the linksys game adaptor at first too but it was to unstable and would drop connection, so I spent one Sunday running a 75 foot eithernet cable through the basement so it would be hardwired. The game adaptor I had was the WGA54G I think. It had 64 and 128 bit wep encryption on it and really did not want to work well with 128. I probably sent that thing back to Linksys 2 or 3 times and read all kinds of horror stories about them on the net, they either worked for people or they didn't. Good luck

Try to use UnPn if your router has it and you won't have to portforward and leave the sling ip at its default.

P.s. another option if you do not want to hard wire is the sling link or netgear also has something similiar that you plug into your outlet and it caryies the signal over your power lines. not sure how reliable these are either but they are about 100 buks, netgears faster ones are a little more.

Thanks for the tips but here's the thing; The airport express does not have any LAN ports.  It is strictly a wireless router, which is why I need to use a gaming adapter, rather than running cables or using slinglink.  I don't use any wireless security because our house is not close enough to another for anyone to use our internet.

Am I doing any of the settings wrong?

Did you setup your Linksys Game adapter to connect to your Airport Express before plugging the Slingbox into it?

No I didn't, but the directions said I should be able to just plug it in and have it work.  Do I have to do any configuring?

Unforunately yes.  You need to configure that Linksys game adapter first.  The pain is that some of those Game adapters have a CD that only works with a PC.  Hopefully you have a Windows PC laying around.

What you need to do is plug in that Linksys game Adapter into the computer with the cable that come with it.  Or any Network Cable will work.  Then run the CD that came with the Game adapter.  It will then launch a wizard that will walk you through the steps on adding the Airport Express name to the Game adapter and get it connected to the Airport Express.

After that's done, you can disconnect it fromthe computer and NOW plug your Slingbox into the Game adapter and run through the Slingbox wizard.

after you do what ajmac has said, you can get into some more advanced settings of the game adaptor by punching in its ip address in your web browser which will give you some more option via its web interface.

Alot of times when setting mine up or changing the settings , i would put the cd in and it would not find it , i would unplug the cables and plug them in and hit search again until it found it. These things are finicky. I think the default ip on that is 192.168.1.250.  You can only use this interface if it is plug into your computer though, it will not find it wireless, so if you want to make any changes to it in the future , you will have to plug it back in to your computer.

Also, make sure the switch on the side is set to infrastructure, adhoc is for linking two playstations or computers together for games like socom and whatever channel you use on your router, use the same on the game adaptor. When in the game adaptor web interface you can chage this but you may have to switch it to adhoc temporarily in the web interface (not the game adaptor itself) to be able to change the channel. Mine was grayed out when the setting was in infrastructure on the web interface, so this is what i had to do. It will also show you your signal strength between the game adaptor and the router. Mine was always  low, even with the adaptor sitting 5 feet from the router. these things are weird I tell ya. If you want to set a static ip , you can do that to.

Okay, so you're all telling me that the numbers I'm plugging into the airport express configuration and the slingbox configuration are correct.  I have to match up the IP addresses on the port forwarding with the slingbox and the airport express, but in the slingbox setup I can just leave subnet mask and default gateway alone.

In addition to that, I have to set up the linksys gaming adapter.  If it asks for port forwarding or IP address in the setup of the Airport express, do I use the same numbers I used for the slingbox and the airport express?

Once you setup the Linksys Gaming Adapter, the Slingbox will automatically populate the subnet mask and default gateway.  The Subnet Mask normally will always be 255.255.255.0.  The Default gateway will be whatever the IP Address of the Airport Express is.

What you just posted, I would do everything in reverse.  I would setup the Linksys Gaming Adapter first.  Make sure it connects to the Airport Express.  You'll notice if the green lights on the Gaming Adapter were on.  From there, then you can go ahead and plug in the Slingbox.  If you get both red lights on the Slingbox, then it's connected.

Run the Slingbox setup and run through the wizard.  You won't be able to run the UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) because Airport Express don't support that.  Just say you're going to configure it manually and click through the prompts.  At the end, it will then present the information the Slingbox has grab from the Airport Express.  IP Address, Subnet, etc....

You'll then get that IP address of the Slingbox, log into the Airport Express, click on the Port Mapping tab, and add the port properly.  Apply and reboot the Airport Express.  Hopefully you'll be all set.

Thanks everyone.  I'll try it and hopefully it'll work out.
