I just bought a Slingbox. During setup it wasn't detected automatically on the LAN, so it required a direct connection using 192.168.0.2 (which had been assigned automatically to it, by DHCP using my Netgear DG834G router/modem where Port 5001 is allowed in and outbound to 192.168.0.2). WAN Access and Remote config cannot be enabled because the Slingbox Directory-->Edit Info-->Slingbox Configuration-->Nework Settings 'Change' button is greyed out.

I can connect to the Slingbox remotely and using the Admin login can also edit passwords, A/V setup (e.g. tune channels) and firmware but, crucially, the Network Settings 'Change' button is also greyed out.

Why? How do I enable WAN Access and Remote config?

When I try to 'Watch' remotely, the SlingPlayer says Locating, then Connecting, then Connected and Starting Stream, before finally failing with 'Not Connected'. No doubt this is due to the WAN Access being set to 'No', but I put it in for extra information.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The reason you're not able to connect with 'direct connection' is because you did not do the initial setup of the Slingbox.  You MUST have the Slingbox on the same network (i.e. the same DHCP enabled router) as the computer in order to do the initial setup, including the network setup.

Make sure your computer and the Slingbox are both connected directly with the router.  Check to see that both lights on the right hand side of the Slingbox are on and NOT blinking.  Disable your firewalls, especially the Windows Firewall, Norton Internet Security / Worm Protection, Trend Micro, etc.

You should see the Slingbox as 'LAN Available' in the Slingbox directory (if it doesn't come up when you launch Slingplayer, open it under 'view' or 'slingbox' at the top of the screen.  If not, do a factory reset of the Slingbox by holding the reset button on the back of the Slingbox for fifteen seconds.

     Happy slinging!

RTFM!

Hi BlueDude,

Thanks for the reply. I did the initial setup on the same LAN, with all firewalls disabled.

OK. The computer doing the setup was connected via WiFi to the router, whereas the Slingbox was connected by cable to a LAN port on the back of the router. I'll try the setup again, with both the computer and Slingbox connected directly by cable to the router, and see if that makes a difference.

Hi all,

To complete this thread; the setup worked using a computer connected *by cable* to the same router as the Slingbox (also connected by cable) - thanks BlueDude. So now I'm happily slinging - or rather I was, as this morning I can't connect to it, and I'm 1000 miles away from it. ho hum.

General request to SlingMedia; you need to introduce a TV program recording function into this product. I'm not always able to watch programs when I want to. I've noticed many other people making this same request, so please make a statement as to what we can expect, and when.

Thank you very much that did it for me. Slinging on my touch once again!
