Have not purchased a Slingbox yet, but is it possible to record media via a streaming video copy program, I'm debating whether to get a slingbox or a windows media system so I can record tv programs

There are two options that I know of -

  1. At-Large Recorder: this will required an older version of SlingPlayer (the client software). It allows scheduled recording, but does not work well with the encrypted stream. Using the older player is the only way to get around the encryption. It is available here for $29.95 (USD):

  2. Sling Community user ChecksumCoder has posted a small free utility that strips away the encryption when using the newer player. However, the current version only allows you to record what you are watching - no provision is available for a scheduled recording. The software is available through a YAHOO Group. A link to the utility is available here:

I have used both - and prefer the first version because of its flexibility. The second could be a nice package with a bit of tweaking - but it is not there yet.

Well I have seen there is a machine out there called the Hava, downfall is does not stream to mobile phone, if slingbox has the ability to record, even if I have to watch while recording, I will go with the slingbox, anyone have any experience in recording on slingbox that they can share?

Thanks,

Jerry

To clarify, both recording options discussed above involve recording at the receiving/viewing end of the chain, not at the Slingbox itself.  The Slingbox has no ability to record. If you are slinging to a mobile client, I am not aware of any recording option for that.

Perhaps the best option is to use a DVR with the Slingbox. Record what you want on the DVR, then watch it via Sling when you want to.

Of course, I did the forum-etiquette thing and searched for what I was looking before I created a new topic and this is the thread that is the closest to my question:

Building off of the idea of recording video from the client end, does anyone know of a way to have a physical DVR/PVR on the client end set to record from the client computer that is connected to the SlingBox?

Sorry if that totally looks confusing.  Here's an example (or rather my situation that I'm trying to make possible):

My Slingbox is hooked up to a digital cable box in Southern California at my mother-in-law's home.  I am in Japan with my laptop.  I have a PVR/DVR (TiVo, MythTV, etc.; I'm actually hoping to build a MythTV box to use) here in Japan with me.  I want to hook my MythTV box to my laptop and have it manage all the recording of streaming video/television and all those goodies.  I pretty much would like to use the MythTV in Japan as if I was physically in California.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I don't think there is a solution to your question.  The best solution would be to put the MythTV box back in the states and use the Slingbox to control it and view from.  That's the way to do it.

I am about to be a new user myself, but only if I can get the at-large recorder to work.

Does the old slingplayer (that allows the user of the at-large recorder to work) work with one of the latest models of slingbox (slingbox AV)?

What I am asking, is can I get the AT-large recorder to work with the newer Slingbox AV product?  If so, where do you obtain the older client (I assume the product is shipped with the latest).  Also, even if you can get the older client, how are you assured that the slingbox itself (firmware version) does not contain the encrypted version?  If it does, can you downgrade the firmware on the box itself too?  Where do you obtain this image?

Thanks in advance.  Hoping to become part of the community of Slingbox owners real soon!

I cannot tell you whether the Old Player works with the newest SlingBoxes being shipped.

For SlingBox Classic, the old player works with both the encrypted stream (i.e.  the new Box) and the unencrypted stream (i.e. the old Box).

Also, for the Slingbox Classic, the new Box (i.e. the encrypted stream) works with both the older player and the newer player.

Again, for the Slingbox Classic, the At-Large Recorder works with either the new Box or the old Box - but it only works with the old player/client.  This is true whether it is working  with the encrypted (new Box) or unencrypted (old Box) stream.

Someone else will need to answer your specific question - will the old player work with the most recently released boxes; though my guess is that it will.

Yes, it will.
My reccomendation FWIW,
Update any and all boxes to the latest firmware. Use older Player software when you want to record and new player software when you don't. Both old and new player software can coexist fine on one machine. Just install or place the players in different directories.

Brandon,

I've a few questions:

What is the last version of Slingplayer that is compatible with At-Large recording, and where can I obtain a copy of that version?

Having the latest firmware doesn't interfere with using At-Large?

I had purchased At-Large shortly before the encryption updates were made and haven't been able to use it since...if I can use it with the latest firmware/older player combo, that would be great!

BTW, I tossed the original disk as I figured I would always get the latest software from Slingmedia's site - didn't think I'd want older software as well!

I don't run At-Large,so don't know what Player version is compatible with everything At-Large can do. If you mean what version did Sling start encrypting, I believe it was 1.3.0.170, but I would have to go back and recheck to be sure.

Not that I know of. Think of the encryption as a two way thing. In other words the Player and the firmware both have to be able to use the encryption. If one or the other doesn't, then the box send unencrypted info.

Should be able to use latest firmware, older player.

Newer firmware and older player works just fine.  That's the way I have mine set up.

I have a New Slingbox AV. Downloaded the trail version of At Large for I could record certain Clips. Would not work so I got rid of at large. My Slingbox has excellent picture quality and audieo I dont want to mess that up. The lastest streaming is encrypted. I am so impressed how well it works. My remote has problems.

You can run the the older versions of SlingPlayer without doing anything to your SlingBox.  I have both the new and the old players installed at home, on my laptop, and on a portable flashdrive.

I have about the same setup as Floyd and I'm using the Slingbox Pro with the latest firmware. It works like a charm!! When I just want to watch I use the 1.4x slingplayer (better quality, etc.) but when I want to record I use the 1.2xBeta with the At-large recorder.

At first I had trouble installing the 1.2xBeta because I already had installed the 1.4x software in my laptop. This solved my problem: I installed the 1.2xB slingplayer in another computer (from a friend's at work) and copied the entire directory "slingplayer" to a USB drive and now I can run it directly from the USB drive or my laptop. Afterwards I just un-installed the slingplayer 1.2xB from my friend's computer.

I don't know of any common source - you might contact Applian ('www.applian.com") to see if they have any leads.

Ok, just a quick question about recording slingbox....

I travel oversees a lot and what I usually do is for an hour or two a day is go to wireless hotspot and surf the web. I would like to turn on my slingbox and record certain shows in the background (I have it hooked up to a DVR).

What I want to do is record them and watch the shows later that day. Would ChecksumCoder be the best option for me? I have the latest version of slingplayer.

Thanks

ChecksumCoder's solution certainly works.  Though I have not used that solution as often, at this point I prefer to use the newest SlingBox software with the older player.
