OK.  So I have been seduced by 3s offer of unlimited data and sling software on a new Nokia N73 (symbian version).  It started off fine.  The client loaded OK, I entered all the details (finder ID et), the phone says it is 'Locating', then it breifly says it is 'connecting' (suggesting it has found my box) then it says it is 'starting'..... and that's it.  It stays saying it is starting for about three minutes and then the application crashes.....

Anyone out there managed to get their slingbox working in the UK on a three x series package phone?  If so HOW!?!  Any help appreciated....

(just to confirm there is no issue with my existing setup at the sling end - I have no trouble accessing via my laptop so it must be the phone....)

AGGGHHHHH.

Not sure I can help you much with your phone problem sorry - but it sounds like a reinstall of the software might be a good place to start  - also is other functionality working ok that requires internet eg. ORB etc..  Also it would obviously be ridiculous if this was the case but there is a possiblity they are blocking the port you are trying to use for slinging...

 Cheers

Rob

PS More interestingly are you able to post here or elsewhere more about the package you got etc.. did you already have slingbox, how was the software supplied to you, how much are you paying etc..  is the phone any good etc.etc.

The orb software works OK, though to be honest at first play the streaming is very dissapointing indeed (playing an MP4 file remotley)... very pixallated and stuttery - frankly unwatchable - streaming music, or pulling accross pictures or documents, or watching my webcam remotley (still not sure why I would want to do that!) all work fine.  Hope the streaming on Orb isn't a benchmark for what I can expect on sling if I get it working.

I am on the '700' package, which is something like 400 minutes (any time, any network), 250 texts at month (not sure where they get the other 50 from to make the 700!).  It is 35 quid a month, but half price (17.50) for the first six months - on top of that I pay £10 for the X-series gold, which gives me "unlimited" data bundle.  (on checking 'unlimited' means 1 gig general browser use + a total of around 80 hours a month either orbing or slinging - to be honest I think that is fair - I don't watch 80 hours a month normal TV!).  The phone also comes pre-installed with Skype, but the catch they don't advertise is that they have restricted 'skype out', which would have been the massive one for me (I dial abroad a lot).  So my £45 a month compares with what I currently pay Orange (I am a heavy business user) but is a better overall deal because of the data. Well, it will be better IF they get the sling working!

In terms of getting it and service, I registered on their website, they got back to me the next day - I said I would think about it and told them to get in touch the next data again but they didn't.  So I walked into a 3 shop yesterday lunchtime (with some ID) and walked out with the phone there an then, it was activated in about 20 minutes.  Incidently, having messed around with a Nokia N80 and an Orange SPV3100 (which I did get slinging on wifi) for the last couple of months the N73 is BRILLIANT.  The only feature it is missing is the wifi, but with unlimited data over three that ceases to be an issue.

I got through pretty quickly to three's technical support last night and spoke to a chap who sounded knowledgeable (after getting transferred from India by a woman who had no clue - but at least they escallated it quickly!).  I did get the impression that I may be the first person in the UK to actually use it for slinging!  He replicated the error on his phone (couldn't connect to my box) but I know the box is working as, like I said, I had my mate connect from his PC on the other side of town with no trouble to test it.   Someone had stolen the plug from the slingbox in the three office, so they couldn't check if it was a network issue by trying to connect to their own.  They will ring back today and we'll try again.  I'll post an update. They have my 5 'cooling off days' to get this working, or my phone is going back!

Excellent post - very interesting .... little worried with your performance issues with ORB as I have used this across PC to PC and quality was good..

What upload speed do you have on your Home BB connection...?  and what sort of speed do you get on Speedtest .  Upload is the all important factor with orb and slingplayer

Hi all,

First post on here, and hopefully first of many ! :)

I purchased a N73 with X-series Gold and Slingbox yesterday, i was going to get a Slingbox anyway but as i happens my 3 contract was up for renewal so i took advantage of that and got one for a discounted price.

Sorry to hear you are having problems setting your Slingplayer mobile up Willy Wonka, to be honest my set up was reletively painless, just plugged everything in (used an ethernet cable for connection to my router rather than wireless, i trust wires more !), run the set-up and it worked straight away, no problems at all.

Picture is fantastic, no problems at all. But i expect that has got something to do with the good upload speed i enjoy with Be*Unlimited (1.3meg Upload speed which equates to around 130-140kbps)

All in all very impressed with it, the only thing i'm trying to find out is if i can make to stream fill the screen of my mobile (i.e go to full screen/landscape mode), if anyone can tell me if this is possible or not i'd be very grateful :)

Anyway, look forward to contributing to this forum :)

Morgan

Bounderboy:  According to speed test I am hitting 478kps upload (and 5 down).  This is so frustrating!

UPDATE:  Nearly a week on STILL no joy with the N73 client.

I have howver unlocked my Orange SPV M3100 (HTC TyTn) and got it slinging onto the trial version of windows mobile PERFECTLY over 3s network.  Wonderful picture.  It got a WOW from everyone I showed.  Haven't seen a piece of technology have such an effect on luddites since I showed them the first ipod they saw 5 years ago!

Just need to get it going on the N73 now!

UPDATE:  ISSUE RESOLVED.

The only port that the symbian client can handle a slingbox on is 5001.  I had my slingbox on another port (no problem for any other clients than the symbian).  Three's Slingbox support team were delighted I figured this out myself cos it had them scratching their heads.

December 16, 2006 4:46 AM

Well 5001 is the default port in setup of slingbox but its a little short sighted of 3 to only enable this port - as you say it is configurable and a lot of people choose 443 for getting through work firewalls etc..  so if this is not going to work this will cause a lot of probs in the future...  which port were you using out of interest?

 What quality were you getting?

I was using like 40001 or something (to try and blag my corporate firewall without success!).  I guess now they realise they have an issue it will go on the 'enhancement' list for future releases in Symbian.  Like many issues it is obvious once you figure it out, with the wonder of hindsight.  They had a couple of people who had rung with the same symptoms as me, so now they know the root cause it can only be a matter of time before they get the same multi port support all other sling clients offer.

I have had no quality problems at all on either sets of ports or via windows mobile or now the N73.  Good enough to watch the footy on is my benchmark test.

excellent i so want this but can't justify 40 quid a month..  i have a work mobile so don't pay anything so would be completly for sling access only.. so not worth it - jealous..

port 443 would be a good port to try to get past firewalls..
