Hi,

I keep reading about the Symbian version but only for people using the 3 network.

What about people in the US that don't use the 3 network.  What about just a stand alone Symbian version that is not dependant on which service provider the phone is on.

This request has a certain justice and symetry to it!  After months and months of people bitching on these boards about the impossibility of legally getting the windows mobile version in the UK, it seems we have exaclty the same situation for the Symbian client in the US!

Maybe just to complete the circle (and wind up even more customers) they should make it available on 30 day trial in the US so you can breifly taste what you're missing - but also make it so you can't pay for it!

Schadenfraude aside for a minute.  Seriously sling - you have people in both countries waiting to throw money at you for these products - why not release them!

I'm curious as to whats been going on as well. Don't the boxes in the US ship with the Symbian logo on them?

Also, it dosent seem the weekly beta update ever mentions the Symbian client....

December 24, 2006 9:25 PM

Yeah, I too have been a bit steamed. I bought my slingbox this past week because it has the Symbian logo on it. Prior to seeing the logo I didn't even have the desire to buy one. But I figured hey I can stream to my Nokia N80, that would be cool.

Thanks for winding Willy, now you got me started...

How disappointing. I am still debating if I will return it or keep it in hopes of the software release. But I know how that goes, everyone speculates that it will be out in a month and six months later everyone is still complaining because there isnt any software for it. Just like the Mac software I have been reading about. When a CEO has to write an apology to customers heads should roll. This whole Symbian issue shows the either heads didnt roll or the wrong ones did.

Honestly I think it is a bit unethical to ship a box that claims it supports an OS and it really doesnt. Heck the documentation inside the box dosent even mention it. A bit of false advertisement I believe. I can understand that it takes time to write software and work out bugs. But dont advertise it until you have it to offer.

More than likely we the consumers are on the crappy end of a bad management decision. Someone ordered a gizillion boxes and instead of facing a production cost loss just shipped them out and hoped no one would notice. They could have saved face and added a little sticker that said "Comming Soon" above the logo.

Charging $30 for the mobile software walks the fine legality line. The box leads you to believe that once you buy the Slingbox you have everything you need to make it work. "So now that we stuck you for $169+, we're gonna hit you up for another $30 just so you can make work like we advertised"

Even if they included a little blurb ot the status once a week they could earn a little more respect.

Bottom line: Bad business practices. Shame, shame. I am suprised in our litigous society Sling hasnt been sued.

I know your thinking geesh why doesnt this guy stop bitching and just return it. Well, it's a matter of principal. And the technology is intreguing. I hold a bit of hope that they come through.

Just my opinion

Pardon my spelling....

Frankly I think this is a really bad move from sling.  I dont know how much they think they can earn from their exclusive tie up with 3 UK but they are sure as hell pissing the rest of us off.  They probably have some sort of understanding with 3 UK that they will not release a standalone for a period of time and they cant disclose when the standlone will come out so as not to take away 3UK's business.

Oh and guess what, the 3 UK slingplayer apparently does not work on non-3 phones!  Think it has been locked to the 3 network or something.  Devious.

any new info?

January 4, 2007 3:40 PM

There was a post in another thread that said they called Sling to see if they had a beta version available and they suggested he ask on this forum if anyone had a client they could send to him. So the big question is.....Does anyone have a client?

If you get any updates please let us know! Thanks for the update. I have a Nokia N80 that is screaming for software.

I have the symbian client that was released for the 3 X-series N73.  The client installs fine on my non-3 N73 but somehow is unable to connect to the Sling Location Finder Service probably because I am not on the 3 network or because Sling has somehow blocked unregistered phones from connecting to the location finder service.  Anybody wants to try, pm me your email and I will send it to you.

January 5, 2007 12:45 PM

That is interesting, you said that you were not able to connect to Sling's finder service.  But what if I know the WAN IP address and don't need Slings service?

January 5, 2007 5:49 PM

I had the same experience as magneto04. I installed the client on E60, but I don't have 3 service. I was hoping it will use wifi. But it gets stuck and cannot get past the finder service. The other option - connecting directly do WAN is not available. It seems this client clearly needs to use 3's network.

I've shot him mails twice since the first reply. Unfornatunely there is no further response from them yet and I've no idea why. Perhpaps we should have more peers to shot them mail to give them more "pressure". Tongue out

I am currently at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.  I will try to visit the Sling booth and see what info I can get about this issue.

Bruce01, please don't post peoples emails in the forum.  It opens them up to even more spam...

Slinging Tivo Series 2, Tivo HD, and TW cable from a Pro. Slinging Tivo HD from a Solo, Slinging Humax DRT800, and TW cable from a Classic to Sprint Mogul, AT&T SX66, N62, 8525, and Dell Inspiron 8600 with Sprint EVDO over Windstream DSL.

Sadly kingweb that's not possible as there is no option to specify the IP address on the Sling Mobile player.

Got it and have removed email address from original comment.

Totally agree with WillyWonka up there.

I'm willing to bet that the Symbian software for US users is made available long before Sling bother doing anything about the Windows Mobile software for UK users though.

Still, I feel sorry for anyone (like me) who - based on the information available (ie: the misleading packaging) bought a Slingbox exclusively for mobile use and basically ended up wasting their money on a useless lump of plastic.

Sling may eventually sort things out, but their reputation for customer service (if they ever had one) is taking a hell of a beating.

January 10, 2007 9:36 AM

Ditto....I bought the slingbox for my mobile as well (Symbian OS) and now feel cheated....They need to address this!

I sling therefore I am.....

I have been fooling with the client designed for the UK 3 network. As it is, it only uses 3G for a connection. The problem in the US seems to be that the big carriers are already limiting or blocking the streaming on their networks because they want to sell their own streaming video. T-Mobile still doesnt have their 3G network running.

All I want is a Symbian S60 player that uses WIFI. It shouldnt be that hard of a conversion of the software already in use for 3G.

Agree completely, I have a Nokia 9500 - perfect form factor for watching TV on. I'm off to the US shortly - WOULD NOT BE USING THEIR DATA CARRIERS FOR SLINGING. It would be great though to use wifi capability while in my hotel room to catch up with any home viewing in the UK.
