Verizon Wireless in Napa told me that I was not allowed to use the slingbox on their network. They said "streaming video" uses too much data transfer bandwidth and slows down other users. They said, " in our contract you have unlimited access, not unlimited usage of data transfers" what a load!  They warned me that if I was transfering too much data (no oned could tell me what too much data was...) that I would be given a warning letter and if it continued then I would be kicked off the network and still be responsible for early termination fees.....

They basically talked me out of buying a new phone.

Has anyone else been confronted with this problem?

Does anyone know how much data is transfered when using the slingbox to a mobile phone / pda?

Yes, #DATA (#3282) should give you your data usage. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In a corporate account, they probably don't even look at the individual phones and data traffic. And AFAIK, no one has ever been kicked off from overusing a phone. Only the data cards.

As for data usage, yeah, MegaZone has it about right. I know it takes about 4 hours to transmit 1 Gig of data with my 768 kb/s uplink. The Treo is roughly at 384 Kbps in typical speed. So that means it takes 8 hours to transmit 1 Gig. That equates to 40 hours for 5 Gigs. And if you drop the speed more, you get even more time. That's a fair amount of TV for the month.

The problem with T-Mobile is that they won't kick you off the network because there's absolutely no chance of you using all that much data. After 9 years as a customer, I ditched T-Mobile for Sprint because their network had gotten so slow as to be almost unusable. Slingplayer didn't work at all anymore. Now, with Sprint, I have several times the bandwidth, 30 fps video and it's HALF THE PRICE.  $15 a month for unlimited data as opposed to $30 a month with T-Mobile if you're actually honest and pay for data, as I did.

I very often connect my Treo to my laptop while on the road and use PDAnet software to connect to the internet. There are many times where I am online for a few hours at a time, this can go on for a couple weeks depending on how long I am traveling. So far this month I have used only 75MB worth of data. I think to reach 5GB it would take a TON of online time, and it would almost seem like a chore to get to that point.
