At our house, we have cable Internet running at an actual upload speed of 360 Kbps.  We have a cabin 2 1/2 hours away from home back in the woods.  There is DSL available there, but Satellite would be cheaper.   We can get 512 Kbps with satellite Internet.  The numbers sound like satellite Internet should handle the slingbox stream just fine, but I was wondering if anybody has tried watching slingbox over a Satellite connection.

I have played with it. Once it starts streaming it's not too bad. But, and this is a BIG but, make sure you read your AUP very carefully; you will most likely find that you can't really stream for more than a "few" minutes a day.

All things considered I would say it's much better to look into streaming over one of the cell phone networks, or, even better, see if you can set up a wireless link between your cabin and some place where access is cheaper.

Good suggestion.  Here is the provider we're thinking about subscribing to: http://www.starband.com/services/pro.html

I tested the slingbox pro and it streams pretty well over the Internet.  I went to my uncles house.  They have cable just like us.  At 360 Kbps, the picture came in pretty clear.  I would think at 512 Kbps (advertised download speed for Starband Satellite) it would come in just as clear.

There is more to it than numbers, besides, your upload speed will be the same, regardless.

I would e-mail or phone the starband people and explain to them what my bandwidth requirements are, they will let you know if it's within AUP.

But, at US$49 a month, isn't it about the same as one of the various wireless plans?

Also, is there some specific channel you need to watch at your cabin, or a security camera feed? If not, why not get satellite  TV? Just curious.

I don't want satellite tv up there because I want to use the slingbox to get cable tv and Internet.   I didn't realize that they limit your bandwidth.  Wild Blue doesn't allow anyone to download more than 7500 MB a month.  If NFL football games last 3.5 hours, that means we can watch about 13 games a month streaming at 360 Kbps.  I'm not sure if we'll exceed that or not.  I'm not sure if any wifi plants will come in up there.

I was not thinking just WIFI, I was thinking cellular.Depending on the terrain layout, and the presence/lack of understanding people, you could set up a point to pint long distance WIFI link. (I set one of for a couple friends last summer. About 34K, from broadband starved small village in the Romanian country side to a place "just across" the border in Hungary. I was streaming from my Vancouver sling without any problems.)
