This is a real strange problem.  I've got 4 slingboxes here, and they've worked just fine.  My problem is with the 1.4 player upgrade.

Last week I was travelling to the east coast.  I used my slingbox to watch the Chargers/Seahawks game and all was fine.  I'd been prodded to upgrade the player to 1.4 but for some reason didn't do it.  I don't know why, but I had a bad feeling about it.

Well after the game, I did the upgrade and now I can't connect to any of them.  I get an error message immediately which tells me that the player didn't even try to connect over the net.  The error message was too quick.

I talked to the folks at Slingbox and they claim it's an antivirus or firewall problem, but it only happened when I upgraded to 1.4.  I've totally removed the software and reinstalled it many times, but still no go.

I finally reinstalled 1.0 and all works fine.  Of course all of the upgrade features are gone.  Slingbox has no old software available and told me I'm on my own here.

It may very well be something on this laptop that is causing this problem, but I don't know what it can be.  I've got players on other computers and I'm afraid to upgrade them to 1.4.

Does anybody know where I can get the previous player software.  For some reason I didn't save the upgrades.  That really sucks, because I almost always used to save all upgrades.  For some reason I didn't with the slingbox upgrades.

Just a thougt:

- If you have the earlier versions of the software on other computers why not use those for your laptop?

- I didn't have issues on my laptop upgrading to 1.4 but there have been some posts for ppl that did.  The upgrade (both software and firmware (depending on which box you have) do increase the video quality so you might want to experiment a bit to find the program that is causing you problems

- under the ms dos prompt run msconfig and go to startup and turn off "stuff" in particular antivirus, firewall and other programs that you have installed and running in background (you will have the ability to turn those back on later)

- now try to install 1.4 and see if that helps.

- when i upgraded to 1.4 i had to upgrade the firmware on my SB Pro.

Well even though I have the earlier versions, I don't have the installer programs for them.  If I upgrade those and have a problem I have no recourse except to revert to the very old version.  My bad for not archiving all upgrade downloads.  Embarassed

I'll explore the issues on my laptop, but it still seems odd that the problem only manifested itself after the upgrade to 1.4.  Last version worked like a champ, and nothing changed other than the upgrade.

The guys at tech support said it's just a conicidence that I had a problem when I did the upgrade.  That makes no sense to me, unless the security issues somehow changed with the new version.

I'd love to get a copy of the previous upgrades if anybody has them.

Btw, the firmware upgrade doesn't seem to make sense, since all 4 of my machines are unresponsive and once again the error message seems so quick that it seems unlikely that the player ever tried to reach the boxes.

Thanks for the help, and I'll report my findings.

I also received this notice while traveling and was equally concerned. After returning home I did the upgrade with my laptop and upgraded my firmware. I am thankful that all went well. If you upgraded while away from home maybe that caused the problem. (Just a thought)

All you need to do is zip up the player folder from the PC with the old player version you want and drop it in on any PC.  You do not need to install it like it's the 1st time.  I have done this on all my PC's,  laptops and Desktops along with my work PC and it works fine.

So just go to your older version on the PC you have it on,  Zip it and move it over to the PC you have 1.4 that does not seem to work.

Unzip it and your good to go.....

You can have multiple players on a PC  with no problems that I have seen.

Well I totally cleaned out the machine and reinstalled and it's still a no go.  I was, however able to get a copy of the 1.3 player to work fine on the laptop -  the folks at slingbox are stumped about this but I'm ok with the 1.3 version - go figure

thanks for all the help

I'm in the same boat.  My laptop doesn't work with the 1.4 software.  I upgraded my desktop with no problem, and it upgraded the firmware...but though the 1.4 software on the laptop sees the Slingbox, it sits there at "Connecting..." forever.

Help!

January 13, 2007 5:12 PM

Downgraded to 1.3.0.176 on the laptop.  It's still locking up at "connecting".

The laptop is connected via wireless to the same router the Slingbox is connecting to, and the downstairs PC - wired - works fine with the new setup.

I also am having the same issues of non-connectivity.  It was after the v1.4 update as well.  The cell phone handshake and wired PC in the same office network works well and is able to connect and stream.  Just like the other users, I am stuck in the "connecting" part of the handshake.

Tech support has said its a firewall issue, but I've removed all firewall components and re-installed without success.  Where are ppl finding the older versions of SP?

I was finally able to get a copy of 1.3 from Sllingbox, but the first two times I called them they told me it was not available.  Apparently the last call was to a person who had a copy on his computer.

I still think that there is a problem on my laptop that won't run 1.4 since it also has other weird issues with other software,  but not enough to coerce me to reformat the drive and reload all the software.  Eventually I'll probably have to do that.

If you have no luck finding 1.3 I can probably send you a copy.

Now if I can turn off the 'upgrade' message every time I open 1.3 I'd really be happy. Smile

I've un-installed v1.4 and installed v1.3 and still the same problem.  Whatever the problem, its now getting really annoying.  Anyone have any ideas of what it could be?  Tech support appears to be useless, since the three times i've called, they all blamed the FIREWALL.

dsclar, think you are on the right track... i may have to format my HD afterall... crap...

I have no reason to believe anything other than the firmware upgrade bundled with 1.4 caused this problem on my laptop.

Maybe I'll have to start making some noise on this.

Potentially a solution...

Thinking that something was up, I started to think maybe the wireless part of my router was the hangup.  I use a Buffalo N-finiti access point and wireless LAN, and all i did was update the firmware.  Then v1.4 started working again.  Very ODD, after looking at all the software firewalls and window firewalls, opening ports, could it be as simple as a firmware update on the router???  Doesn't make sense but I'm slinging again.  Hope it helps the few people out there with the same problems.

Good luck...

I don't know if it's the wireless part of my router at all, but I hooked up this laptop directly (wired) and it still didn't work.

I need to try my cell phone connection just to rule out internal network issues.

SUCCESS!

The problem wasn't the 1.4 firmware or the new SlingPlayer software. It was the apparently infernal McAfee Security Center software.

I followed the instructions at this post and it works fine:

http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/t...

The post doesn't tell you how to stop the service. That can be done by:

Start>Run>services.msc

Then, find the McAfee Redirector service and right-click on it to stop it. (Or select the "Stop service" link if you left-click on it.)

As SOON as I did that, the SlingPlayer software worked!

Restarting the service after adding that "5001/ignore" line in the registry still has SlingPlayer working.

I don't know about any 1.4 firmware issues, as a reset knocked mine down to 1.0.96. But...it seems to work fine, so I'm not gonna mess with it unless it prompts me to upgrade.
