I am living in Germany and just upgraded to DSL 6000 (download) and 512 (upload).  When I do the the speed test on the sling website I get very bad and strange results....usually around 200 kbps down and 200 kbps up...sometimes my upload speed is actually higher than the download.  Before complaining to my provider, I decided to find a German speed test (speedmeter.de) to try out.  On the German site I got something like 2500 kbps down and 400 kbps up.

Does the location of the speed test site play a role here?  How can these values be so different?  They were done at the same time of the day.

I am in the process of setting up a slingbox in the US but I am wondering if my internet connection will be up to the challenge.

 Thanks,

 Tim

I have a SB in the UK and I view it in the US.

My specified u/l in the UK is 2.8 Mbps; I measure the u/l to a UK speed test site at about 2.6 Mbps.

My specified d/l in the US is 3 Mbps;  I measure the d/l from a US speed test site at around 2.75 Mbps.

My actual streaming rate from UK to US is around 950kbps.

A friend of mine has a UK SB (with u/l speeds measured at around 2.6 Mbps) and is viewing in the US with specified d/l speeds of 6 Mbps (don't know what his measured d/l speeds are).

He has a streaming rate of around 1.2 Mbps, but his ping times (around 165 msecs.) are shorter than mine (around 210 millisecs.)

When I measure u/l speeds from my UK location to US speed test sites, the speeds are much lower than when measured to UK speed test sites.  They are even significantly lower than my actual streaming speeds.

Other factors which may impact your actual performance are whether your ISPs (at either end) have traffic shaping policies.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, cymro.  You have a lot better speeds than I do but it seems like you are confirming what I am experiencing.  If you use a speed test from another country (physically in the UK but use a US speed test), you get worse results compared to using a speed test from the country you are in.

I guess I will just have to wait and see until I get my slingbox set up to see what really happens.
