Hey Guys,
The other day one of my friend brought me an Slingbox Pro from USA. I live in Chennai, India, where you have the limited cable TV channels, if not using one of the setupboxes from TataSky, Dishtv, or even Sun Networks. I hooked up my slingbox using the supplied splitter. ie. the Main cable wire directly goes to the one end of the splitter and the out of the other two 1 goes to my Slingbox and other directly to the TV. I used the sling supplied coax cable to connect to slingbox from the splitter.
Once this setup is done, I went ahead and added the slingbox to my wireless SMC Router. Once this setup in place, i Switched on the slingbox, router, and started configuring the Slingbox. To do this, I have already downloaded the latest UK Version of the slingplayer software(1.41). Once this sw is installed, it immediatly recognized the slingbox from my network. Then during the Configuration screens, i have selected co-axi cable, next you can select either analog arial or cable with out cablebox.. either of them worked. Well offcourse, I have selected 'India" from the country list. Then started scanning the channels, to my astonishment my slingbox was able to scan 45 channels (these is the no of channels you get when you using the basic cable tv, i guess, chennaits know this). save the settings and you are done.
Now i started my slingplayer and i was able to watch all the programs. One question still puzzles me here is "I KNOW FROM SLINGBOX PRO SPEC THAT ITS INTERNAL TV TUNER IS BASED ON NTSC. IN INDIA WE USE PAL". But who bother, as long as it works.
Now I am a happy slingbox owner in chennai. my next step is to set this up in internet. Am waiting from my Internet connection from state owned BSNL. I am not sure when are they going to give me the broadband connection.. counting fingers....
I will post, some pictures of my slingbox running SUN TV, JAVA TV, RAJ TV, ETC.. soon.
Based on my experience, i can say that the slingbox pro works in India. so if any of you guys waiting to buy i will say go ahead and do it.. only one catch.. its your money.!!!!
Feel free to contact me, in case you need any help regarding my slingbox setup

Hi Mr Subbu I am useing slingbox pro in USA since July 2006. working great but i am trying to install sling box in Gujarat india and going to watchin in USA . Hope will work. From PAL to NTST. If know any thing about let me know. my email is franklibby2000@yahoo.com
Hi Subbu,
I recently setup my slingbox classic in Bangalore. I use it to watch the channels here in the USA. But basically, I was in India recently and I successfully setup the Slingbox classic there. The only glitch is the upload speeds in India. The best I was able to get was an unlimited plan with 256kbps upload speed and out here I see the video straming around the 160 to 170 mark. It is not great for things like sports although I can watch it no problem but for the other 80 odd channels I get, it seems pretty decent. I am hoping to get the 512 kbps upload speed from my ISP before the world cup and with that it will be awesome.
BTW, slingbox classic does not work with PAL signal. I had to use a multisystem VCR to convert the cable input to a NTSC signal.
Let me know if you have any questions and maybe I can help.
Hey franklibby
The new slingbox pro will definitly work in PAL setup based on my experience. but as the SlingUser71
mentioned the old classic one might not work. i havent tried it. cause i dont have an old one. so you can enjoy all your favorite program from india after you setup the newer one.
However, as SlingUser71 mentioned, the Broadband speed in india concerns me alot. so go for an ISP who gives the maximum dw/up speed so that your sligbox experience is pleasent all the way.
well, if you need any help setting up the slingbox in india(i assume you know very well, as you are already using one.) do let me know.

Yes. I have classics that are NTSC models running with satellite receivers with output in PAL. The sling recognizes this and when you look into the info of the sling you will it has changes the output to PAL.
I have two satellites in one receiver. I can change the receivers output to NTSC PAL, PAL only or NTSC only.
I've not had any issues with doing this.

I like to find out which satellite reciever that can output to pal. I have an ir2000 ird that uses irdeto to decode chinese programming at 95w which satellite are you pointing to that you need pal?

Intelsat 10 68.5E DSTV Bouquet and FTA channels all in PAL. But I also have another satellite at 146E Agila2 Dream TV thats broadcast in NTSC. Then there's the FTA content on Asiasat3 105.5E Also PAL.
Any Irdeto receiers that I use have both PAL and NTSC outputs or switching NTSC PAL. You can use the receivers TV Output the have the receiver canvert NTSC to PAL or Pal to NTSC.

Hi Subbu
I am posting this in the forum as there is no provision to mail you personally. I am from Chennai, working in the US for the last 8 years. I am planning on getting a Sling AV and bringing it to Chennai in April during my vacation. your posting was extremely helpful for many of us here, who were looking for answers about setting up sling in Chennai. Can you pls let me know the fastest ISP in Chennai so that I can have my parents get broadband from them(We currently use BSNL a.k.a the tortoise).
thanks
Saravanan
Hey Saravanan,
Sorry for the late reply. Glad to hear that, my posting helped you.
Reg the ISP in chennai, we have airtel, tataindicom, hathway and BSNL available in chennai. they have various broadband plans from speed ranging from 256kbs to 2mbps. how ever if you are looking for unlimited download then you should go for unlimited plan. and these unlimited plans rightnow available only at the speed of 256kbps. BSNL recently introduced the 2mbps speed but not unlimited.
in addition there are various plans from these ISP which provides unlimited browsing in odd hours say starting from 2am to 8am. etc.. you could get more details about this in most of the ISP websites.
hope this helps. feel free to post your comments if you need more informaiton.

hi,
I not-so-recently purchased a PAL Slingbox (classic, i think) from UK and sent it over to Hyderabad, India
My brother is trying to install that for me but has not been successful so far - probably because of the low-end router which doesn't show up any advance port forwarding settings. Once he gets a new router, I will know whether that works or not
Can any of you pl. tell me whether (1) you have tried installing UK PAL slingbox in India ? (2) it is required to have unlimited download/upload in addition to unlimited browsing with atleast 256kbps speeds of internet access ?
regards,
Karthik Sitaram
also i would be grateful if anybody can guide my brother Ravi in India on installing the (PAL- UK) slingbox there
if you could provide your contact details, i could ask him to contact you about it
i have been waiting since Nov 2006 for the installation to be done; and time is running out for the cricket world cup !

Hey karthik, 1. you have tried installing UK PAL slingbox in India Well, I am not. but i dont see any different in installing the a UK PAL version to that of the new slingbox pro. its all the same. so rest assured, it will work as promised. 2. it is required to have unlimited download/upload in addition to unlimited browsing with atleast 256kbps speeds of internet access ? Nop, unlimited browsing is equivallent to unlimited download/upload as per the ISP's in india. so if you have one of these unlimited plan from our ISP's that should do. only catch there is the speed they promise.. ie 256k(b)ps. its the small 'b'. so your viewing experience should be varying. Coming back to help your brother Ravi, i would advice him to put his current setup, ie. 1. the router/switch type with model no 2. the current network setup/firewall setup if any. would guide Ravi to do the installation. i would say rather than he calls, post the above information in the forum itself, advantage is any one can reply so.. Subbu

thx Subbu
I will ask Ravi to post his trials with slingbox installation
But I would appreciate if you can provide any contact reference of yourself or, still better, anybody in Hyderabad who knows about slingbox installation (maybe Ravi can call you from Hyd and do the installation with your advice)
When I was guiding Ravi to install slingbox (classic PAL UK version), he was able to get the software identify the slingbox, even scan the (90-odd) channels, but the pictures received were all ghosty in nature & upside down. And, importantly, the router had no advance settings on port forwarding / UPnP that would be necessary to setup the remote viewing
