Hey Guys,

The other day one of my friend brought me an Slingbox Pro from USA. I live in Chennai, India, where you have the limited cable TV channels, if not using one of the setupboxes from TataSky, Dishtv, or even Sun Networks.  I hooked up my slingbox using the supplied splitter. ie. the Main cable wire directly goes to the one end of the splitter and the out of the other two  1 goes to my Slingbox and other directly to the TV. I used the sling supplied coax cable to connect to slingbox from the splitter.

Once this setup is done, I went ahead and added the slingbox to my wireless SMC Router. Once this setup in place, i Switched on the slingbox, router, and started configuring the Slingbox. To do this, I have already downloaded the latest UK Version of the slingplayer software(1.41). Once this sw is installed, it immediatly recognized the slingbox from my network.  Then during the Configuration screens, i have selected co-axi cable, next you can select either analog arial or cable with out cablebox.. either of them worked. Well offcourse, I have selected 'India" from the country list. Then started scanning the channels, to my astonishment my slingbox was able to scan 45 channels (these is the no of channels you get when you using the basic cable tv, i guess, chennaits know this).  save the settings and you are done.

Now i started my slingplayer and i was able to watch all the programs. One question still puzzles me here is "I KNOW FROM SLINGBOX PRO SPEC THAT ITS INTERNAL TV TUNER IS BASED ON NTSC. IN INDIA WE USE PAL".  But who bother, as long as it works.

Now I am a happy slingbox owner in chennai. my next step is to set this up in internet. Am waiting from my Internet connection from state owned BSNL. I am not sure when are they going to give me the broadband connection.. counting fingers....

I will post, some pictures of my slingbox running SUN TV, JAVA TV, RAJ TV, ETC.. soon.

Based on my experience, i can say that the slingbox pro works in India. so if any of you guys waiting to buy i will say go ahead and do it.. only one catch.. its your money.!!!!

Feel free to contact me, in case you need any help regarding my slingbox setup

I am from chennai and using Slingpro and is working fine and I am able to get around 45 free channels tuned and able to change the channels remotely using the PC which ever channel we want to see.

Now I have connected set-of-box, supplied by SCV (Coship cdvbc5120) to the sling box what ever the channel that currently set using the regular remote only able to view. The remote function is not working using the remote in the PC. Basically the IR Code in the setup is not able to configure as the brand and model is not available in the configuration setup.  can you suggest some solution.

Hi there

I am looking at installing a Slingbox in India (Coimbatore). I currently own a Slingbox Classic, but from what I understand I will need to connect it to a VCR to get it to work. Unfortunately it seems impossible to buy a VCR these days. Do you guys recommend that I buy a Slingbox Pro. Does it surely work in India. The tuner in the Pro is also an NTSC tuner, but does it still work? Please do let me know. I will be traveling in a couple of weeks and need to buy one asap if required. Thanks

Hey Abhi,

Thought the same, looks like we cant post bin files.. how about you post the file in rapidshare and give the URL here ?

what is sw and if i do get the slingbox tuner ntsc, is the slingplayer uk version comparable with that version. Also, when I go to kerala, sometimes there's always blackout every night. Is that mean that the slingbox will be off? Should I buy power back up connector for that.

Hello Subbu

You seem to created a small revolution and congratulations on doing such great work!.

I dont use Slingbox in the US but plan to bring one back to India when i relocate in September. (I am an IAS officer and I will be based in Delhi or Hyderabad and will primarily watch NDTV (24x7,India & Profit) , CNN-IBN/IBN-7 and US channels CBS and PBS only.

1. Does Sling support these channels in India? How good or bad is the reception?

2. I can buy Sling Pro for Vista (or any other specific version you suggest) either in the US or UK. WHich one would you reccomend? Does the US version come in multivoltage and PAL now?

3. Do you recommend any specific router, cable or accessories to buy with it? I have 802.11N and G.

4. Can one view Slingbox on WM5 devices (like the Q or the Treo) in India? Are the speeds good enough to support it?

5.I am completely out of touch with the ISP scene: Which is the best now in India?

Grateful for your advice.Keep up the great work!

Hey Andrew,

Sorry friend (if I could call you) :) sw means Software.. sorry for the confusion. My experience as well as lots of others experience says, current sling tuner works in india.

Well, regarding powercut/blackout, i know some part of kerala is notorious for powercut..(no offending here, as i myself belongs to kerala).  during powercut, your slingbox will be off.. as it requires power. investing in a power backup option is always good.. how ever, before investing, pl do enquire that, your cable operator in  your area do have the same and you have un-interrupted tv services, and unless he doesnt have, dont think it is going to help you..

Hey athreya

Thanks and Glad to hear about my post. My comments are inline.

1. Does Sling support these channels in India? How good or bad is the reception?

As long as your cable opreator provides this, slingbox does supports. fyi.. i myself watching these NDTV (24x7,India & Profit) , CNN-IBN/IBN-7 channles. my cable operator currently doesnt provide the us channels. so cant say.. but if your cable operator/settop box have this, then you can surely watch.

2. I can buy Sling Pro for Vista (or any other specific version you suggest) either in the US or UK. WHich one would you reccomend? Does the US version come in multivoltage and PAL now?

Slingbox pro is the best. .and this hasnt released in UK. (they just started selling to canada now).  I would recommend the slingbox pro as all my experience is based on that and this is the top end model now.  You just need to plug this into socket, you dont need any converter for voltage.

3. Do you recommend any specific router, cable or accessories to buy with it? I have 802.11N and G.

Your current setup is more than enough to provide the best experience. fyi.. i run my setup in 802.11b.. and slingbox pro still is great in that connection too.

4. Can one view Slingbox on WM5 devices (like the Q or the Treo) in India? Are the speeds good enough to support it?

Slingbox support pda.. there is even viewer available for it. sorry .. i havent really try that here.

5.I am completely out of touch with the ISP scene: Which is the best now in India?

if you are looking for unlimited connection, then bsnl, airtel, vsnl all provides the same.. incase of bsnl and airtel the max bandwidth for unlimited connection is 256kbps.. and vsnl provides 512kbps but at a cost of 1800Rs/m when i heard lastly..  how ever, airtel and vsnl provides static ip.. their websites provides more detailed plan details.. pl check before you order one.  i would recommend unlimited connections.

Thanks again.. and hope my comments helps you.  Pl post your slingbox experience here in this blog later on :)

thanks for your prompt response. just a few clarifications on the respective questions.

1. I am a bit confused. You are saying you ARE watching NDTV etc but then say your cable operator does NOT provide it. What does that mean?

b. When you say your cable operator does not provide a channel...i thought once you subscribe you can get all channels. is that not the case?

2.Wouldnt the US version be 110V? How do you directly just plug it in?

3.Whenever you get a chance over the next few weeks do you mind checking it out on a mobile frankly? Frankly if i buy it it will be for a mobile device only. I dont see much point in having it on your computer when you have a TV at home? (Unless you can watch different channels at the SAME TIME on the TV and slingbox..i that possible?

4. So do you reccomend VSNL (Thats Tataindicom now right?)...and a non-static IP address is preferred to a statis one, if i understand you correctly?

5. Lastly would you know if there is a newer version of Slingbox Pro due this year? (the last one came out in Aug 2006 so int an upgrade due?)

"am a bit confused. You are saying you ARE watching NDTV etc but then say your cable operator does NOT provide it. What does that mean?",

When you say your cable operator does not provide a channel...i thought once you subscribe you can get all channels. is that not the case?

well true, how ever i live in chennai now, where if not using the settopbox you are limited to 45 channels, that is the basic channels what my cable operator (scv) provides. and this 45 includes ndtv,24x7.. etc.. but certainly not the CBS pbs.

But in your city this might varry.. so my suggesiton would be dont worry on this.

2.Wouldnt the US version be 110V? How do you directly just plug it in?

yes.. you can just plug it in. the adapter supports both 110 and 230.

Am sorry i dont have the pda devices.. hence my options are limited. Slingbox pro comes with a splitter using that, you can watch two different program in tv and slingbox. if you read my first post, i have mentioned the same :)

4. So do you reccomend VSNL (Thats Tataindicom now right?)...and a non-static IP address is preferred to a statis one, if i understand you correctly?

well gng by what we have now, they provide the highest bandwidth ...also the downside is cost. vsnl is always costly.. if you subscribe higher bandwidth your slingbox experience will be even better. so your call

5. Lastly would you know if there is a newer version of Slingbox Pro due this year? (the last one came out in Aug 2006 so int an upgrade due?)

no idea. for me it doesnt matter, mine is working now great.. and am happy. :).. probably you might check the other forums for that news.

Hi all,

Thanks for the wonderful thread. I live in NJ and am planning to setup a slingbox in Chennai so I can watch the tv programs from NJ.

Ideally I would like to record the streaming video so I can watch the shows at my leisure. Now what is more convenient, setting up a DVR type PC in chennai or use a DVR in NJ so I can record the streaming video from here?

 Thanks in advance.

Arvind.
