Hey Guys,

The other day one of my friend brought me an Slingbox Pro from USA. I live in Chennai, India, where you have the limited cable TV channels, if not using one of the setupboxes from TataSky, Dishtv, or even Sun Networks.  I hooked up my slingbox using the supplied splitter. ie. the Main cable wire directly goes to the one end of the splitter and the out of the other two  1 goes to my Slingbox and other directly to the TV. I used the sling supplied coax cable to connect to slingbox from the splitter.

Once this setup is done, I went ahead and added the slingbox to my wireless SMC Router. Once this setup in place, i Switched on the slingbox, router, and started configuring the Slingbox. To do this, I have already downloaded the latest UK Version of the slingplayer software(1.41). Once this sw is installed, it immediatly recognized the slingbox from my network.  Then during the Configuration screens, i have selected co-axi cable, next you can select either analog arial or cable with out cablebox.. either of them worked. Well offcourse, I have selected 'India" from the country list. Then started scanning the channels, to my astonishment my slingbox was able to scan 45 channels (these is the no of channels you get when you using the basic cable tv, i guess, chennaits know this).  save the settings and you are done.

Now i started my slingplayer and i was able to watch all the programs. One question still puzzles me here is "I KNOW FROM SLINGBOX PRO SPEC THAT ITS INTERNAL TV TUNER IS BASED ON NTSC. IN INDIA WE USE PAL".  But who bother, as long as it works.

Now I am a happy slingbox owner in chennai. my next step is to set this up in internet. Am waiting from my Internet connection from state owned BSNL. I am not sure when are they going to give me the broadband connection.. counting fingers....

I will post, some pictures of my slingbox running SUN TV, JAVA TV, RAJ TV, ETC.. soon.

Based on my experience, i can say that the slingbox pro works in India. so if any of you guys waiting to buy i will say go ahead and do it.. only one catch.. its your money.!!!!

Feel free to contact me, in case you need any help regarding my slingbox setup

Subbu.

Hi Subbu & others:

 You guys are geniuses!!

I am a NRI living in Singapore and was wanting to buy a Slingbox to be put in Inida so that I could watch the Indian Channels like NDTV,CNNIBN etc sitting in Singapore.I have a couple of questions:

-Which Slingbox do i buy and any specifications I need to give keeping in view that India is PAL.Do I need to buy the Slingbox from US and then download the UK version of the S/W or how do I do it.

-How do I configure the box as I have TATA Dish connection in India and a unlimited broadband package from one of the service providers

-Will I be able to change the channels sitting in Singapore. If so,how do i configure that.

-I am on wireless broadband in my home in Singapore,so when I get the feed to my computer which is connected to 40" LCD TV,will I get a good quality picture

-Lastly,where do i buy the SLingbox from, which is the cheapest source.

Thanks a ton in advance and you can reach me on my email:lmalik68@yahoo.com

I have 437 kbps of download speed and 137 kbps of upload speed. will this work for slingbox?

May 22, 2007 10:27 AM

Hey Aravind,

am little confused.. as where do you want to watch your tv from. i belive, u wanted you watch from chennai. Pl remember that, slingbox doesnt allow you to record tv shows. so you better off with DVR.

your bandwidth is more than enough for slingbox to work. have a good sling experience :)

My commentes are inline

In Singapore the old classic version is available. you can use this, if you dont want the new features of slingbox pro. you just need to buy the pal version though.

-How do I configure the box as I have TATA Dish connection in India and a unlimited broadband package from one of the service providers

Slingbox comes with clear picture diagrams etc.. to help you configure your tata sky.

-Will I be able to change the channels sitting in Singapore. If so,how do i configure that.

Pl check the slingbox help files. it will be clear enough

-I am on wireless broadband in my home in Singapore,so when I get the feed to my computer which is connected to 40" LCD TV,will I get a good quality picture

absolutely.. how ever, your upload speed from india varries from what broadband connection you have.

-Lastly,where do i buy the SLingbox from, which is the cheapest source.

Well if in US then try pricewatch.com..this tells you.. who sell slingbox the cheap.. there are alternate sites too like newegg etc..

Thanks Subbu, for the quick response.

Yes, I want to watch the Indian programs (sun, raj & kalaignar (he he he))

from NJ.  I want to setup the slingbox back home in Chennai and want to be able to watch from NJ.

Here is another confusion I have. If I do setup a DVR in india something like sagetv, do I still need Slingbox to watch it from NJ? I believe sagetv comes with a add-on which pretty much works like Slingbox, but not sure though.

hey aravind, nop i guess you are pretty much all set with sagetv.. but sling.. its different :) use it to feel it. Subbu

last question: any recommended accessories for it? do we need to buy the HD connector? (Dont know if there are any HD channels in India).

Presume Slingbox will work with Vista? thats what i have. thanks a lot.

Hi Subbu,

Thanks for your prompt response.Just a couple of addl questions:

-Where in Singapore can i buy the Slingbox and do i ask for Slngbox classic with PAL?

-I understand the key in India will be the upload speed. If I do not get a package with 256k upload speed and get 60k upload speed, will the picture quality suffer as i want to watch it on a 40" LCD.

Thnx.

Dear Aravind, Subbu,  Karthik, Athreya, Lathit,

Let me explain what i have done in Chennai. My son has sent one  SligBoxPro  from US. Just connect the SlingboxPro to the VSNL/BSNL 256 kbps unlimited Plan Internet connection to the SlingboxPro and also  connect the Set-of-Box Cable provided by the ISP (SCV) to the SlingboxPro. Configuration is very simply. My son is able to watch from US  all the programs  that is broadcasted in Chennai (Sun, Jaya, NDTV, CNN IBM,Cricket Matches,etc..) clearly. I was told that you can record any the program if you r PC is having DVD writer at US. My son is able watch what ever the program he is interested by using the remote that is appearing the PC monitor. My son  told me that the quality is good. The SlingboxPro  that is available US is working well in India . Do Not worry about whether it is PAN, NTSC. Just buy the latest SligBoxPro in US. It will work in India.

Hey Athreya,

There are no HD channels in India as far as i know, so dont think the connector is much of use here.

Thanks Ranjith & Subbu. I wish I knew this before!

I am going to place an order for Slingbox AV.  I believe the only diff between pro and AV is that pro is HD and AV is not. since there are no HD channels yet in India, I am going to go with AV.

Buy.com has a sale on AV which sells for 125.99.

Thanks all for your input!

Actually the Slingbox AV does not have an Analog Tuner. So if you do not plan to use the Tuner buy the AV

Oops. What is an Analog Tuner and why do I need one?

Well if your cable in India comes through a coax (analog) then you need an analog tuner to tune into it.  DVD players/ VCR's / set top boxes normally give out the video and audio via composite or component cables. But if you do not plan to use any of these then you need an analog tuner

Hello Everybody,

I have followed this thread for a long time and thought will provide my input and questions. Some of them might already have been answered. I was one of the early adopters of slingbox (Nov 2005). I had then bought a SlingBox original and taken it to India. I had lot or problem connecting the coaxial and getting clear picture due to the NTSC and PAL issue. I then gave up trying because it was becomind difficult to have my folks try out various things. I wanted to find out if the original slingbox will still work with the Analog Tuner? Would it be better to go with PRO? My parents (chennai) and brother (bangalore)both dont have Cable boxes. WIll the PRO work without the need for a cable box and will I still be able to change channels (if I use a splitter).

 Ur inputs are appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Sriram

I will be traveling to India next week with both a Slingbox Pro and a Slingbox Classic. I will test both out and let you know. I should have something by the beginning of next week
