This issue seems to be a major complaint from Sling users around the world. I've personally had the problem for over a year and during that whole time I've yet to see a definitive 'check list' of things to try. The major thread about this in these forums has 100+ posts spanning over a year and is contradictive throughout - this overload of posts and thoughts on teh issue doesn't help anyone new with the issue. Therefore because of the history and the scale of this problem could someone be kind enough to help everyone one out and compile a help doc of things to try. This product is fantastic and when it works its the greatest thing but when this problem occurs it becomes one of the most frustrating.

I'm in the U.S. and my slingbox is in the UK. When I can't connect I call my parents to restart the slingbox. Sometimes this work and sometimes it doesn't.

Please can someone help us all.

respect to everyone on these forums

I have the same issue.  The only thing I have found to do is reset also :-(

The issue you are having, the firewall issue when you are at a remote location, usually has to do with an error at home.

 1. If you are remote, are you able to connect from other remote locations as well? Can someone connect from another computer? If these answers are NO, then the issue is at the home location.

2. The firewall issue is most commonly caused by a power glitch or someone accidently unplugging a router at home. See, most Slingbox users have to port forward, or open a port within their firewall so they can connect remotely. Those who have DSL may have to port forward through multiple devices. If the power goes out or someone power-cycles it, you most likely will not be able to connect remotely anymore.

 3. Factory resetting the Slingbox probably is not fixing your issue. Ultimitely the fix may be simply re-running the "Network setup wizard" and checking port forwarding settings.

I think the you are right that problem resides on the home network but isn't normally something as simple as someone physically unplugging or turning off the router.

The resetting being referred to I think is more rebooting.  And to clear the error normally involves rebooting of router or slingbox or both.  When I experienced the problems I found I could reboot router and all would become fine.

When I changed my router I never experienced the problem again.

There is no definitive answer yet other than that it appears to me to be router based but saying that it could still be something the slingbox is doing to the router - its a strange problem..

As well as router and slingbox I would add the cable/ADSL modem as a posible source of the 'glitch'.

I was getting this error about once a week until I followed the normal recommendation of putting the router on a timer to reboot itself at 0400 in the morning.   It worked fine for 6 weeks but then failed again, regardless of the router rebooting.    Time to phone the friendly neighbour :-)

Switching off the modem and rebooting it seems to have fixed the problem completely.  So I guess the safest thing to do is to put the router, the slingbox and the modem on a power strip and run it through a timer.   I did wonder if the boxes needed to be started up in a pre-determinded order (modem, then router then slingbox - 3 different timers?) but this seems not to be true in my case.

In a lot of cases is the Router and Modem are built in to the same unit...  it is and was in my case anyways :-)

seems like nobody is the wiser on this issue. I could add a timer to the router/modem/slingbox but sometimes turning on and off the slingbox/router/modem fails to solve the problem as I mentioned in my original post.

what is slingmedia's position on this issue? - Is anyone responsible for trying to resolve this issue and as I mentioned in my original post generate a definitive list of things to try?

Its getting frustrating to read posts which are purely speculative and based upon individuals who haven't had the problem and think they can help by throwing out the usual comments... firewall, port forwarding etc. I hate to sound like I'm criticizing people trying to help but what I was hoping to point out in my original post is threads like this already exist which have discussed the problem over a year and a half. What we need in this thread is definitive list of what we do know that is relevant. Bounderboy - I've been reading your posts for a long, long time. what have you learned from all you've read as to what people should try as I know there isn't a single fix for all...

When you have had this problem, have you guys checked your port forwarding settings to make sure they are still there?

yes they're still there.

As a frequent user of remote viewing, I have found two activities that can TRIGGER this error message.  It would be great if Slingmedia can update software version 1.4.0.206 to solve the problem.

Since I can cause this problem when I successfully view remotely, the problem is not only the "make sure the box is turned on, set up for remote viewing, and not blocked by firewall" as claimed by the company.

The two triggers I have found are:

1) attempting to make Audio/Video Set-up Slingbox Cofiguration changes when viewing remotely.  This doesnt seem to work, and creates the error every time

2) sending too many commands to the slingbox.  When making channel changes after than the screen can react to (resulting in many "pending" commands on the slingplayer screen), I get this error frequently.

Would be great if a new software build can fix these two triggers for error.
