Anyone out there have any word about Slingboxes with cable card capability?  Would this be easy to implement?  I know that you can connect your cable box to the A/V ports but for those of us that don't want yet another big box (digital reciever) in thier media setup it would be nice to use cable cards.

The slings cannot take pay cards.

Are you asking if you have a TV that is cable card compatible will it work?

Well I would think you can try output from Cable card TV source 1 back into the same  TV but into video source 2.  I don't think Sling cares where it get's it signal from.    Kinda of a way to trick it maybe.  what you think?

Yes, if you have a TV that has a monitor port and cable card you can take the A/V from the TV and inject it into the slingbox. But, how do you tell the TV to come on? You either have to leave the TV on or get no digital content because I don't think there are any remote control hooks for a TV in the slingbox IR control. Does anyone know if there are or how this can be configured?

This has been discussed in some other threads recently..

It might be worth submitting a missing remote to Sling if your TV is otherwise compatible..  (and you don't mind it being on when you're gone)

You could also look into creating your own.

With all that said, adding a box is usually pretty cheap and by doing that you can add a DVR too..

Those are some good ideas.  I will look into them.  It's just that come 2009 when the big digital move begins and analog is dumped there's going to be an awful lot of slingbox users who will own a technicaly advanced paperwieght.  It would be nice to see some work being done toward a digi-card ready device.  I completely realize there is more to it than simply putting a card reader in the device.  The CA logistics alone will cause problems, but it's worth it, to both us AND Slingmedia.  The Slingbox would be treated EXACTLY like a digi-card ready TV is now, you just need a PC to set it up when the cable guy shows up.

Of course, one can get the cable box/DVR, but this defeats the elegance of one device, requiring a tiny bit of realestate, instead of two or three boxes requiring ten times as much space as well as cables, location, power requirements, etc.  For example, I can install my slingbox in a closet if I want to, I can't put the DVR/Cable box there because I need LOS for the remote(s) to work.

A WELL DESIGNED technological advancement makes life easier NOT more complicated.

Actually, not to beat a dead horse here, but the issue I'm discussing is NOT how to make a TV remote control, but a Digital decoder for the Slingbox.

I guess the topic should have been When is Slingmedia releasing Digital Decoder Slingboxes.

Here is a teaser for things to come:

It's almost official: Starting Feb. 18, 2009, millions of televisions in American households will go black unless they're outfitted to receive all-digital broadcasts.

People are offering workarounds for now...

I would think it's just a matter of time. I would see the Pro V2 (maybe V3) having Cablecard, HD OTA, Component, SVideo/Composite, probably WiFi..

We could start the name contest now.. Maybe SlingBox Pro V?, SlingBox Extreme, SlingBox Ultimate, ???

Putting a cablecard reader in a Slingbox seems like a no-brainer. I'd rather pay $100 more for a slingbox with a reader, than one without. With a reader, you'd never have the slightest concern that your slingbox can correctly tune to the needed channel, whereas with a slingbox + a digital cable receiver, there's always an extra point of possible failure. Furthermore, unless you're willing to have two cable boxes (one for inhouse use and one for slingbox use), you can't sling while someone in the house is watching a different channel... or so I understand.

The cable companies (Cox, for example) don't like cablecards. They like renting you a box that they can control and more easily monitor. However, the future should be built with TVs, DVRs and Slingboxes with cablecard readers. Using an external digtal cablebox tuner is a kludge.
