Having big problem to connect my Sling Box Pro with the New Apple Pre-N Airport Extreme, even the port forwarding has been done on the Airport.

Please help me if anyone knows how to resolve this. Thanks

My setup is a SlingBox AV, an AirportExpress, and an AirportExtreme.  The SlingBox is attached via ethernet to the AirportExpress, and the AirportExpress is extending a WDS based on the AirportExtreme.

The Mac version of SlingPlayer works OK on my iMac.  The PC version of SlingPlayer does not detect a SlingBox on my home network, but is able to connect using the Finder code.

What problem are you having?

designonly.

I have a Slingbox Pro HD on an Airport.N 5gHz network (with .G airport express daisy chained as a bridge on the back of  the .N running on 2.4gHz) and the OS X version is totally able to see the Slingbox...as is the SlingPlayer software on Windows XP (running on the MacBook in PC 'giggle' mode).

What problems are you having?

The big issue is one of ensuring that the Slingbox DOES have a static IP address on the internal network and only port-forwarding the TCP port (as the instructions on the OS X SlingSetup App says the Slingbox uses TCP -- not mentioning UDP).

Wanna help.. more info needed.

Hi....what about an airport connected directly via ethernet to the Slingbox Pro? When I connected it that way, the device was not even detected on my network. I finally connected the Slingbox Pro back to my US Robotics router (which is connected to the Air Port Extreme via the US robotic's Wan Port (so the Extreme is supplying the US Robotics G router with internet and the US Robotics Router (USR8054) plays nicely with the Slingbox). I would love to eliminate the need of the USR8054 (which is only serving the purpose of supplying the Slingbox a network that it can work with. Thanks Wayne

Hi,

I am also struggling with connecting my slingbox to the airport extreme. I was getting no joy with a direct connection to the airport extreme until I reset the slingbox and left it alone for about 30 minutes.

I then started again and it was recognised on my internal network. I think it got confused as the IP address for the extreme is set to 10.0.x.x  rather than 192.168.x.x.  A hard reset and a delay on rebooting should sort this although I changed my extreme to allocate IP addresses to align with the slingbox preference... (INTERNET, DHCP tabs and then select the approporiate settingon the DHCP pull down menu, select 192.168).

So now my slingbox works internally. I'm stillstruggling to get it to wrk externally (I've set up port forwarding but so far no joy.. I'll keep you posted as I get on.

Any thoughts on connecting externally would be gratefully received.

Another wrinkle I discovered in my setup:  it makes a difference which WiFi supplier the SlingBoxPlayer machine sees.

I guess that's not very clear.

In one room, I have an Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem.

In another room, I have an Airport Express connected to my SlingBox.

If I start the SlingBox Player on a computer that is in the same room as the AirportExpress, it discovers the SlingBox right away.  This works with both an iMac and a Windows XP laptop.  Both are connecting to WiFi, presumably through the Airport Express.

If I start the SlingBox Player on a computer that is closer to the Airport Extreme, the Player reports that it cannot find a SlingBox on the network.  If I turn off the power to the Airport Extreme, the Player shortly thereafter springs to life.  Though, of course, no computers can see the internet.

My explanation:

When the Airport Extreme is powered on, the computer near it connects and fails to see the SlingBox.  When it is powered off, the computer near it connects to the more remote Airport Express and finds the SlingBox.

My hope:

I hope there is some way I can

  1. Set the Airport Express to extend the network managed by the Airport Extreme
  2. Reserve an IP address tied to the SlingBox's MAC
  3. Configure the Player to use that IP address
  4. Configure the Airport Extreme to forward the port to that IP address
  5. Make successful use of the SlingBox Locator magic number

OK - I will take a stab at my first post.

I have been able to get the remote viewing to work with the Aiport Extreme (2007) as my base station and the Airport Express as the bridge.

I have the Airport Express set as participate in a WDS network in WDS Main mode.  I hard set the Express IP address to 192.168.1.201 and configured IPv4 to "Manually".  I have internet sharing set to bridge mode.

I set the airport extreme to a DHCP range of 192.168. I also configured port  forwarding of 5001 on 192....202 (explained below).  I also added the MAC address of the slingbox to the access control (as I am filtering the MAC addresses).

I then went into the slingbox setup and manually set the IP address of the slingbox to 192.168.1.202 and then manually set the port forwarding to 5001.

Once I finished the slingbox setup, I was able to then view/control my Comcast cable box on my Cingular Treo.

Hopefully this helps others as I screwed with it without any luck for a few days before getting lucky.

I can not get remote access at all. I have given it, its own IP with port 5001 and went through the slingbox setup and did manual remote setting. I was given an a finder code and I still can't get connected I have not clue what to do now. I never had this problem before and feel really frustrated about this unclear issue I have.

Here is a fix that i have gotten to work both internally and for remote viewing. Tested and 100% correct.

OK, got it to work with the Apple Airport Extreme (2007 version). I think the problem was the DHCP range the Extreme was using by default. Out of the box it uses 10.0.x.x. Switching it back to the more common 192.168.x.x seems to allow the Sling to talk to the Extreme. I would imagine the issue is on the Sling end, but I'm no network expert. How to get it to work:

1) Open the Airport Utility (Go-Applications-Utilities, or Spotlight it).

2) Select your Airport Extreme on the left. If you don't see it, plug your computer into the router using a wired cable.

3) Go to 'Manual Setup.' (in the menu, click BASE STATION-MANUAL SETUP, or APPLE-L). Five icons will appear at the top.

4) Click the INTERNET icon.

5) Click the DHCP tab.

6) Set the DHCP range to 192.168.

7) Click the ADVANCED icon.

8) Click the Port Mapping tab.

9) Add a new entry (+ button) with the following options... - Public UDP Port(s): - Public TCP Port(s): 5001 - Private IP Address: 192.168.1.201 <-- YOU NEED TO SET THE SLING TO THIS ADDRESS ON SETUP - Private UDP Port(s): - Private TCP Port(s): 5001 Click Continue. Name the entry 'Slingbox.' Click Done.

10) Click the Update button.

If you are connected to your Extreme wirelessly, you will have to wait for it to restart and your computer to connect back up before you continue. Now all you need to do is setup the Slingbox.

1) Connect an ethernet cable to the Slingbox from the Airport Extreme.

2) Power cycle the Slingbox. I recommend holding down the reset button so you can start fresh. This will force the sling to pull a new IP from the Airport Extreme.

3) Run the Slingbox Setup Assistant.

4) You should see a video feed!

5) Under the ROUTER CONFIGURATION section, make sure you do NOT opt for the automatic UPnP. This crashed the setup app. Choose Manual [advanced].

6) Under the Manual Network Setup... - IP address: 192.168.1.201 - Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

7) Port Setting - Use port number: 5001

8) Copy the SlingID it gives you. Jot it down if you want to connect from a machine outside the network. This should wrap it up. Now you can run the SlingPlayer and add your box using your SlingID. Here are some screen shots to help:

I tried this exactly as described and it didn't work. My Slingbox is connected directly to my Airport Extreme, and so is my Mac (but wirelessly). Any more suggestions?

June 23, 2007 9:32 PM

Not long after I posted in February, I was eventually successful. The problem was that the slingbox was stuck with the IP address that it had with my USRobotics router. So I simply changed the airport extreme to the same subnet 192.168.nnn.1 and let the XXX for the slingbox remain as 237. It worked fine after that with my PC laptops, my IMacG5 and now my Cingular (att) 8525 through windows mobile 5.0. I changed the router because I did not see a reset button on the slingbox to get rid of the 192.168.NNN.237. Forgot to mention that I have a Dishnetwork VIP 622 HD DVR . Wayne

June 24, 2007 7:33 AM

That did it. I had to be careful because when switching my Airport Extreme from 10.0.1.x to the 192.168.x.y scheme, it kept the "1" in the third position (ex. 192.168.1.x instead of 192.168.0.x). Once I corrected it to 192.168.0.x it worked just fine! Thanks for the help Wayne.

Hi Alligator,

Glad that worked. Because I still don't know where the "reset" button is on the slingbox pro.

I've tried the above, but My airport utility will not accept a dhcp ending address with the 192.168.xxx dhcp range. I tried using 192.168.0.xxx, but the sling box is supposed to be 192.168.1.201. What is a valid dhcp ending address

September 1, 2007 11:20 PM

The Slingbox will get whatever range is set in DHCP for the router. The DHCP address space for the router must be the same as what the LAN address space is for the router. Private address spaces are usaully of the following subnets: 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 127.x.x.x, and one or two others. It matters NOT which one you use.

I sent you another post, but i will show my further ignorance here. A telephone wire brings the DSL info to what is labeled a "Westel router". A cat 5 cable runs from he router to the Airport extreme. Two pc and one Mac have cat 5 lines to the AX. One Mac book is connected wirelessly to the AX. The mac book can view the Sling box all around the house, but can not communicate from other wireless hotspots. The Ax is currently only setting up in bridge mode. The "share a public IP address" mode encounters a set up problem (My fuzzy last night memory thinks it said "two wan numbers exist".) Beyond that I can set up in the 10.x.x or 127.x.x subnets, but the 192.168.1.x will not accept any ending addressess. (192.168.0.x is accepted, but the slingbox address is supposed to be 192.168.1.201 and that is outside the beginning and ending range) Many promising posts have insisted that 192.168.x.x is the only subnet that will ultimately work with the mac & slingbox. Thanks again for your help

Does anyone know if it is essential to have a static ip address to make remote contact with my slingbox?

September 3, 2007 12:16 AM

Hi J. Morten, Not sure of all that you are talking about but if your slingbox seems to have an IP address of 192.168.X.201, just set your Airport extreme to 192.168.X.1 . Since I could not find the reset button on the Slingbox Pro, I just let it keep the same IP address and matched the router to it. If you want to connect remotely then you must use Port Forwarding. This is done by clicking on the "advance tab" (looks like a gear) within the airport extreme administration page. Then choose port mapping and click (+) to add and then use the IP address of the Slingbox (192.168.1.201 or whatever it ends up be) and then put in the port number 5001 for TCP and UDP. Hope this helps! Wayne

I discovered that Slingbox can work with a dynamic IP address. I have tried to have the Westel router port forward directly to the SlingBox, but I'm concerned that the Airport Extreme(AEBS) may still be denying remote access to the Slingbox. The AEBS will only configure with connection sharing turned off (Bridge Mode). I had hoped this meant the AEBS was no longer a barrier. Sling comunity discussions have instructed a two router system requires both routers have port forwarding intiated, but AEBS in bridge mode does not offer a port forwarding option. I know just enough to be dangerous, so I'm sure there are many significant settings I'm failing to recognize. If port forwarding on the Westel router is all that is required, I must be incorrectly setting the port for slingbox. At this point the slingbox still can not be activated remotely. Your input would be appreciated.

Hi J. Morten, As a former Verizon DSL customer, I am going to assume that the Westell that you are talking about is the model 327W (the wireless modem/router). This model is IMO horrible as a router and is very bad at port forwarding. I would disable the router function (easily done on administration page) and use it only as a modem connected by ethernet cable to the WAN port of your Airport Extreme (burn the bridge LOL). Then do the port fowarding through the Airport extreme and you're done. Wayne

Good day!

I'm having terrible issues when trying to use the Sling's remote viewing features with an Apple Airport Extreme N (the current release). My network setup is basically similar to what gopmarko wrote above on May 24th, it is as follows:

Cat5 cable connection from Modem to Airport Extreme WAN.
Cat5 cable connection from Airport Extreme to Sling Box
Cat5 cable connection from Airport Extreme to MacBook Pro

The settings for all devices has the Airport Extreme set to use the 192.168.0.XXX LAN IP address range. The Sling is set to see the router using the standard 192.168.0.1 setting and the Router is supposedly forwarding port 5001 to the Sling. Even Sling Tech Support has double verified that my router and sling network settings are correct.

Basically all settings for both the Airport Extreme and the Sling Box are correct. That said Remote View fails every time.

I have tried changing the Sling's IP address, tried different Ports, and even tried using a different router. In this case switching to a different router worked just fine. I have many reasons for wanting the Sling to work with the Airport Extreme, first off, I don't want to buy another one.

So as this time it seems that the Sling Box will not work with the Airport Extreme, no matter what.

Is there just some major issue when trying to work with a router that Sling just doesn't like?

Please help!
